THE FINANCIAL PERFORMANCE OF EUROPEAN COMPANIES: A COMPARATIVE APPROACH
The present study empirically examines the financial performance of European companies and tries to identify the profitability differences that exist between: enterprises with same profile, economic sectors and between several countries from the European Union. Based on data of the year 2009, the newest available on the BACH-ESD database, three financial performance main indicators are being calculated, namely: Return on Assets, Return on Equity and Net Margin. Results are discussed and compared with the ones obtained in former similar studies and some conclusions are drawn. The most performing sectors are found to be mining, quarrying, professional, scientific and technical activities, utilities and IT&C. The sectors that perform the worst are transport and storage, agriculture, accommodation and food service. As shown in other studies the most profitable and competitive companies in the sample belong to the Nederland, Belgium and Austria and the least profitable ones are situated in Italy and Portugal. As a complementary useful result of the study, the average values obtained for the three variables, in the various sectors considered, can be utilized for future comparisons, for assessing the financial performance of companies that belong to same sectors as those surveyed. This paper is a dissemination of the results obtained by the author in the doctoral program "The financial performance of EU member states' companies", coordinator: Professor Carmen Corduneanu, PhD, carried out within West University of Timişoara, Romania, in the period October 2010- July 2012.financial performance, return on assets, return on equity, net margin, BACH-ESD database
Mapping Violeta Parra’s Cultural Landscapes [electronic resource] /
“Readers discovering Violeta Parra for the first time and those who wish to deepen their understanding of her will appreciate this illuminating book.” —Nancy Morris, Professor, Department of Media Studies and Production, Temple University, USA “The editor and her collaborators have given us a gift—the ability to ‘listen’ differently to the music and art that embodied a nation, a social era, and a singular artist.” —Steve J. Stern, Alberto Flores Galindo and Hilldale Professor of History, Emeritus, University of Wisconsin-Madison, USA One of the leading figures in Latin American folk music and art during her lifetime, Violeta Parra was a vital force in the artistic, musical, visual, cultural, and social cultural production of the Chilean 1960s. Fifty years after her death, she continues to deeply influence artists of the present day. This book revisits Parra’s work and legacy to illustrate her global impact across artistic and political boundaries. Contributors offer multi-disciplinary perspectives that delineate how Parra contributed to shaping and—at the same time—antagonizing, societal processes in mid-20th century Chile. Patricia Vilches is Professor of Spanish and Italian and Scholar in Residence at Harlaxton College, UK and Professor of Spanish and Italian at Lawrence University, USA (retired). She is author of Blest Gana via Machiavelli and Cervantes: National Identity and Social Order in Chile (2017) and co-editor of Seeking Real Truths: Multidisciplinary Perspectives on Machiavelli (2007).“Readers discovering Violeta Parra for the first time and those who wish to deepen their understanding of her will appreciate this illuminating book.” —Nancy Morris, Professor, Department of Media Studies and Production, Temple University, USA “The editor and her collaborators have given us a gift—the ability to ‘listen’ differently to the music and art that embodied a nation, a social era, and a singular artist.” —Steve J. The Benefits of Bilingual Education
This article explores the controversial issue of Bilingual Education. Violeta Mendoza Wagner argues against the notion that Bilingual Education has failed in California schools. Borrowing from personal experience and based on a review of relevant literature the author concludes that Bilingual Education is a means to provide immigrants with a gateway to becoming full participants in this society. Dismantling Bilingual Education will not only weaken the social fabric of the state of California, but could also have a negative impact on its economic future at a time when multiculturalism and diversity are of utmost importance in an increasingly globalized world
Al filo de la modernidad: Las décimas autobiográficas de Violeta Parra como literatura
Violeta Parra’s life and work have been the object of countless studies highlighting the artist’s identifi cation with popular social classes. Apart from a few exceptions, the critics consider her compositions and writings as an authentic popular expression, without noticing their aesthetic intention. Parra’s autobiographical décimas have undergone a similar process. The scholarly analysis of the décimas has mainly focus on the social theme and on the author’s diaphanous identifi cation with common people. This paper attempts to demonstrate that — in spite of what has been said about the transparent quality of the mimesis in selfrepresentation — the Décimas of Violeta Parra are a literary text and, as such, resort to form, rhetorical resources, style and to other literary techniques in order to achieve a pre-determined goal.

Pavao Ritter Vitezović\u27s private records and verse correspondence as sources of insight into the quotidian life of the author in the pre-modern Habsburg Empire
This paper presents the results of research into several aspects of the everyday life of the Croatian polymath Pavao Ritter Vitezović during his stay in Vienna in the period from 1710 to 1712. It contains an introduction, two case studies, and final remarks, as well as the renditions of several epistles into Croatian language by Zrinka Blažević. The first study is based on the critical edition published in 2019 under the title Pavao Ritter Vitezović, Epistolae Metricae (edited by Violeta Moretti and Gorana Stepanić). It thematizes an episode from Vitezović\u27s life exploring a few striking elements that can be inferred from the epistolary conversation between Vitezović and the secretary for correspondence of the Hungarian Court Office Éliás Wanyeczy concerning a joint meal on St Leonard\u27s day. These elements include the question of the menu, and the nature of the relationship between the two correspondents. The letter addressed to Ritter (NSK, R 3953 b) facilitates the reconstruction of Vitezović\u27s relationship with Wanyeczy, and supplements the conclusions about the role of the Latin epistle in the conversational culture of the early eighteenth century.
The second study presents several insights into Vitezović\u27s work habits based on the exploration of the author\u27s personal notes contained within the booklet bearing the title Varia extracta et notitiae (archived in the National and University Library in Zagreb, Croatia, as manuscript R 3463). It shows that Vitezović, who is well known today as an extremely productive author, continues to build his own fund of proverbs, sayings and quotes in his mature years. Of special interest are two Croatian verses with atypical content compared to the rest of Vitezović\u27s œuvre, as well as his personal notes on sold copies of his recent editions. Although the selected sources are not diaries in the strict sense – considering the fact that epistolae metricae are verse epistles addressed to both the various correspondents from Vitezović\u27s time and to posterity, while Varia extracta et notitiae are prose records of a private character – yet they offer insight into Vitezović\u27s everyday life and, as such, need to be further explored if we wish to provide a basis for presenting Vitezović\u27s private life in greater detail
Retrato de Chile según Violeta: una aproximación geográfica al cancionero popular chileno (1957 y 1958) a partir de las categorías de espacio poético y espacio de resistencia
This work seeks to analyze geographically the second and third albums of the Chilean folklorist and artist Violeta Parra, realized in 1957 and 1958 respectively. The songs that make up these two albums are the result of the compilation work carried out by Violeta herself travelling her country between 1953 and 1959. This aspect is not a minor detail because it was an artistic imprint and an ideological position that accompanied her throughout her career. From here, the author of this article tries to outline the aspects with which Violeta portrayed her Chile through the lyrics, starting from two key concepts of space: poetic and resistance. The methodology used is the qualitative content analysis in which it is sought to identify elements in the lyrics of the songs that correspond to the two established concepts.
