United States Cellular constructed a 480-foot steel tower in the middle of Machiasport village on the weekend of October 9. Although the company had the necessary permits from the town code enforcement officer none of the townspeople were aware the red and white tower with blinking lights was going up in their town. The fact that the code enforcement officer was well within his authority in granting the permits without notifying the town\u27s residents points to the need for towns to continually review their building ordinances

As many as 28 Maine post offices are on a list for possible closure or consolidation, part of the U.S. Postal Service\u27s nationwide attempt to cut costs and compete with alternative carriers. Many small-town residents who rely on the post office as a community center argue that the USPS has an obligation to continue serving both large and small communities. Residents in Sargentville and East Vassalborough have organized in an attempt to save their respective post offices, but the final measure in determining whether a facility will remain open is based on a rigorous set of USPS guidelines. In 1987, Maine became the only state in the union to ban the sale of irradiated food. Recently, state senator John Baldacci, D-Bangor, introduced a bill in the Legislature to lift the ban, and he has the backing of both state epidemiologist Dr. Kathleen Gensheimer and Dr. Robert A. Graves, medical columnist for the Bangor Daily News. All three believe that foodborne bacterias, such as the E. coli bacteria, which killed two Maine children last year, are more of a threat than irradiation. Details

A proposal to change the zoning in downtown Camden to allow for the construction of two parking lots in a residential area has many in the town concerned that they are witnessing the paving-over of the traditional village. Some fear that the proposed change would be just the beginning of a domino effect that would result in the replacement of residences with commercial establishments. Details

In 1969, Maine became the first state in the nation to outlaw billboards, and only Hawaii and Vermont have similar legislation. Signs on the Maine Turnpike announcing the availability of lobster and promoting the University of Maine at Orono Black Bears hockey team have been permitted, and under consideration by the Legislature is a bill (L.D. 1653) that would allow signs for a state liquor store, hotel and conference center at Exit 5 in Saco. Whenever there is an exception to the law, others want to be allowed to erect a similar sign. Details

The Maine College of Art next month will open the doors on the first phase of the remodeled and renovated Porteous building. The $10.7 million project will more than double MECA\u27s floor space, and will consolidate operations from 11 downtown buildings. MECA has a current enrollment of 300, projected to increase to 450 within ten years. Roger Gilman, MECA director, credits the school with being a catalyst for redevelopment on Portland\u27s Congress Street, and doesn\u27t believe the downtown district development or the involvement of Elizabeth Noyce would have occurred without MECA.
