William Stone papers
William B. Stone, Charles County, Maryland, lawyer and landowner, counted among his ancestors a number of influential Maryland politicians, including a proprietary governor from the early seventeenth century. The Swiss Kidney Stone Cohort: An Observational Study to Unravel the Cause of Renal Stone Formation.
Its nationwide character, standardized and extensive patient work-up, long-term follow-up, and significant number of patients recruited make the Swiss Kidney Stone Cohort a valuable tool to better understand the pathophysiology of kidney stone formation
Rapa Nui (Easter Island)’s Stone Worlds
This article explores the spatial, architectural and conceptual relationships between landscape places, stone quarrying, and stone moving and building during Rapa Nui’s statue-building period. These are central themes of the ‘Rapa Nui Landscapes of Construction Project’ and are discussed using aspects of the findings of our recent fieldwork. The different scales of expression, from the detail of the domestic sphere to the monumental working of quarries, are considered. It is suggested that the impressiveness of Rapa Nui’s stone architecture is its conceptual coherence at the small scale as much as at the large scale. </div
Oral History Interview with Ed Stone and George DeLong
The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an interview with Ed Stone and George DeLong. This interview was conducted with a group. Both Stone and DeLong were in Pearl Harbor when the Japanese attack occurred. DeLong was aboard the USS Oklahoma (BB-37) after it was struck and rolled over. They share their stories of how Stone and his crew rescued DeLong and his crew from the Oklahoma, and their overall experiences during the attack. DeLong later served as a Quartermaster aboard the USS Helena (CL-50), participating in the Battle of Guadalcanal. He also served aboard the USS Crater (AK-70) and the USS Dixie (AD-14), where he assisted with atomic weapons experiments at Bikini Atoll. Stone served as a radioman aboard the USS Pyro (AE-1)
Stone structures in the Syrian Desert
An arid land, known as the Syrian Desert, is covering a large part of the Middle East. In the past, this harsh environment, characterized by huge lava fields, the "harraat", was considered as a barrier between Levant and Mesopotamia. When we observe this desert from space, we discover that it is crossed by some stone structures, the "desert kites", which were the Neolithic traps for the game. Several stone circles are visible too, as many Stonehenge sites dispersed in the desert landscape. We can use an image processing tool, based on the fractional gradient, to analyse the satellite images to help location of the archaeological sites. Transferring the use of physical quantities, such as gradient, fractional gradient or wavelets, to the image processing can give good results in several multidisciplinary applications. Other tools are under developmen
Scrivere di pietra | Writing about stone
| This work is one of eight chapters, including five by the author, resulting from research commissioned by the Consortium of Producers of Piasentina Stone in Torreano (Ud), directed by prof. Mauro Bertagnin. This chapter contains an annotated bibliography, meant to be exhaustive, on Piasentina stone, the Eocene breccia used throughout the area of eastern Friuli, beginning with the early geological studies of the late 1800s and concluding with the most recent contributions, be they of a geological or historical and ethnographic nature
Aarero Stone - Two Solos in a Performance Landscape
How do we care for the strangely familiar and mourn the distant dead? The solo performance, Aarero Stone (2006) grew out of collaborative research into mythologies of stone and narratives of embodiment which express grief. European and Maori expressions of grief embodied in stone were researched through workshops in New Zealand and London. Through this research, processes of metamorphosis as embedded in mythology, geology and in digital processes were explored as a way to better understand and inhabit the changes we are experiencing in a new world order of global communications and terrorism. This enquiry followed a perceived shift in relations of meaning within art processes from metaphor to metamorphosis. Inspired by mentor, Marina Warner, I sought to explore metamorphosis as an energy and defining dynamic for change and transformation. The resulting choreography was described as 'spellbinding...an austere pageant of dance poetry...tragic, bold and clandestine.’ The Listener Dec 2007

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an oral interview with Albert Stone. Stone joined the Navy in April 1945. He completed boot camp at Great Lakes. From there he went to Gulfport, Mississippi for basic electronic training. In September 1945 he was shipped to Corpus Christi, Texas to train on naval aviation electronics and radar equipment. In June 1946 he was assigned to Operation CROSSROADS at Bikini Atoll in the South Pacific. His rank was AETM-3C, Aviation Electronics Technician Mate 3C. He was assigned to the USS Avery Island (AG-76), though was farmed out to a destroyer escort to fix and test all of their radio-controlled boats. He was discharged October 1946. He received a real estate license and a radio-telephone license and earned his pilot’s license with his G.I. Bill. He finished up at Duke University in 1950 with an electrical engineering degree. He worked for Savannah River Plant for DuPont Construction. He also worked on the Boemark Missile System, the Apollo program, the moon shots, and the Saturn V program
