    The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an oral interview with Gerald Stevens. Stevens joined the Navy soon after the attack on Pearl Harbor. He trained as an engineman at a school conducted by Ford in Dearborn, Michigan. Stevens was assigned to the USS Kane (DD-235) and traveled throughout the Pacific. He describes the refueling process in particular, an incident with a major leak on deck and fuel lines parting. Stevens also describes the challenging weather conditions that the ship faced. He left the service in December of 1945

    Don Stevens was born on a farm halfway between Greenville and Belding. After high school he moved to Grand Rapids where he worked for a local laundry from 1937 to 1941 and then began working for the Joppe's Dairy in 1941. Stevens was instrumental in creating the United Dairy Workers union with John Gibson from the Michigan CIO, after which he worked for the Retail Wholesale and Department Store Union beginning in 1944. Stevens' next position was with the AFL-CIO where he was elected in 1957 to the Board. In 1958 he was elected to the State Board of Agriculture, the group that would become the MSU Board of Trustees in 1960. He was on this board until 1978, serving as chairman from 1968 to 1970. Stevens was a member of the MSU Board of Trustees during both the staff and faculty unionization movements.     Gift of John Revitte.Don Stevens, former Michigan State University trustee and AFL-CIO board member, talks about his experiences in the Michigan labor movement. Among other topics, he discusses the Association of Catholic Trade Unionists, the anti-union efforts of Father Coughlin, the pro-union efforts of other priests, the internal struggles of a number of Michigan unions during WWII as different factions jockeyed for control and influence and the creation of the United Way as a method for coordinating charitable fund raising . Stevens also talks about the 1961-62 Michigan constitutional convention, Coleman Young, Gus Scholle, the growth of union influence in the state and the 1948 campaigns of G. Mennen Williams for governor and Gerald R. Ford for the U.S. Congress. Stevens says that Ford courted union support in the 1948 Republican primary and later betrayed the unions by voting to override President Truman's veto of the Taft-Hartley Act.
