Molt and bioenergetics of Pacific black brant (Branta bernicula nigricans) on the arctic coastal plain, Alaska

    No full text
I examined feather molt and bioenergetics of nonbreeding and failed-nesting Pacific Black Brant near Teshekpuk Lake, Alaska. Molt initiation primarily occurred during the first week in July but extended from 26 June through 29 July. Total molt score, a measure of wing and body contour feathers in blood quills, increased from arrival to early molt, but changes thereafter were generally nonsignificant. Age and sex classes showed little variation in total molt score. Primary feather growth averaged 7.2 mm/day for 249 individuals banded and recaptured and growth rate showed no significant difference when analyzed across year, age and sex class, stage of molt or date. Primary feather growth rate of captive birds equaled 7.0 mm/day but significantly declined during molt. Some Pacific Black Brant flew when the 9th primary averaged 61-64% of mean final length, but most regained flight when the 9th primary reached 70%. Flightless Pacific Black Brant occurred in the Teshekpuk Lake molting area from 26 June through 19 August. Pacific Black Brant significantly lost weight during molt. Adults molted at heavier body weights than subadults. Body weight - primary length relationship did not change during molt except for failed-nesting adult females. Lipid reserves declined 71-88% and comprised only 2-4% of corrected fresh body weight at late molt. Protein reserves significantly declined except in subadult males. Ether-extracted lipid was accurately estimated by internal fat deposits and percent carcass water. Carcass protein was predicted by a multiple regression using corrected fresh body weight, breast muscle weight and leg muscle weight. Grasses (Poaceae) comprised 75% of the diet and occurred in 100% of 24 birds examined; mosses averaged less than 1% of the diet. With an estimated net caloric intake of 815 kJ/d and an average daily energy expenditure of 994 kJ/d, adult female Pacific Black Brant required 139 g of endogenous lipid over the 31 d flightless period. Diet and endogenous lipid met 82% and 18% of daily energy expenditure, respectively. Pacific Black Brant may select this molting area more because of protection and seclusion than the quality of food resources

Coordinating compliance and face goals within persuasive messages: A Cognitive Rules model of communicative goals and strategies

    No full text
A substantial body of research has examined relationships between individual-difference or situational variables and selection of compliance-gaining strategies. The present thesis extends this research in two respects. First, the thesis explores how people pursue multiple goals (e.g., enhancing or diminishing a target individual\u27s identity and autonomy, presenting a favorable self image) while seeking compliance, and how they coordinate compliance and face goals in persuasive messages. Second, the author presents a Cognitive Rules (CR) model which offers one explanation for how individual-difference and situation variables influence the production of persuasive messages coordinating multiple goals. Four experiments testing predictions about the effects of exposure to priming and level of construct differentiation on open-ended reports of communication goals or persuasive messages are reported. The results of Study 2 support predictions derived from the CR model. Specifically, when participants sought compliance with an obligation, priming and construct differentiation both exerted significant effects on reported frequencies of supportive interpersonal goals. Studies 1 and 4, however, provide no support for the model\u27s predictions. In those studies, priming and construct differentiation failed to influence goals or persuasive strategies. The final investigation (chronologically), Study 3, examines whether the effects of priming and differentiation are moderated by situational factors. As predicted, priming influenced goal reports only in attributionally ambiguous compliance-gaining situations, where the cause for the target\u27s failure to fulfill an obligation and the target\u27s intent were open to multiple, plausible interpretations. Unexpectedly, the effects of priming in those situations were limited to highly differentiated participants. These findings have implications for models of message production, conceptions of communicative situations, and research on compliance-gaining strategies

Cultural variations in emotion and effective emotional support processes: Documenting differences in the experience, expression, and management of emotional distress

    No full text
A variety of research programs in the study of emotion have explored the ways in which people experience, display and cope with distressful emotions. Research in social support has examined factors related to how we respond to the distress of others. However, little research has attempted to provide an integrated analysis of emotional management that accounts for how emotional experiences, emotional displays, coping behaviors, and response behaviors interact and influence the social process of distress management. The research presented here examines the influence of culture and cultural values such as individualism and collectivism on the experience and enactment of social distress. Utilizing a theory of cultural rules for the management of distress, this research ties literature addressing both emotion and cultural values into an integrated theory. This project examines how culture influences (a) the way people conceptualize distress, (b) the strategies people employ for coping with distress, (c) the types of distressing situations that are seen as appropriate or inappropriate for the provision of social support, and (d) the characteristics of effective and sensitive responses to another\u27s distress. 100 Euro-Americans and 100 Chinese respondents took part in this survey-based study. Respondents embodied both culture-transcendent and culture specific rules of emotional management. Culture transcendent rules encouraged the expression of distressing emotions and the approach of troubling situations and feelings. At the same time, respondents also embodied emotional rules specific to their respective cultural groups. Chinese participants embodied emotional rules geared toward preserving social harmony among ingroup members, down-playing emotional displays, and encouraging the use of instrumental (i.e., problem-focused) coping and social support. Euro-American participants generally embodied emotional rules geared toward self expression, the pursuit of individual goals, and encouraging the use of affective (i.e., emotion-focused) coping and social support

Community-based health insurance and social protection policy

    No full text
Of all the risks facing poor households, health risks pose the greatest threat to their lives and livelihoods. A health shock adds health expenditures to the burden of the poor precisely at the time when they can afford it the least. One of the ways that poor communities manage health risks, in combination with publicly financed health care services, are community-based health insurance schemes (CBHIs). These are small scale, voluntary health insurance programs, organized and managed in a participatory manner. They are designed to be simple and affordable, and to draw on resources of social solidarity and cohesion to overcome problems of small risk pools, moral hazard, fraud, exclusion and cost-escalation. Less than 10 percent of the informal sector population in the developing nations has health coverage from a CBHI, but the number of such schemes is growing rapidly. On average, CBHIs recover between a quarter to a half of health service costs. As a social protection device, they have been shown to be effective in reducing out-of-pocket payments of their members, and in improving access to health services. Many schemes do fail. Problems, such as weak management, poor quality government health services, and the limited resources that local population can mobilize to finance health care, can impede success.Health Economics&Finance,Health Monitoring&Evaluation,Poverty Assessment,Safety Nets and Transfers,Insurance&Risk Mitigation

Much work goes into each Rally, and the rallies prove to be more work than dances, but it serves as a chance for the students and the teachers to raise school morale and have fun together. The Students Council this year has been fortunate every dance that has been put on has brought in a profit. The extra money that is made has gone into the rallies to make them the best we can. This usually means more candy to be thrown to the crowd, more prizes to be won, or more items to be purchased to be used for events. One of the things that Student Council has tried to do this year is have events that are unique and brand new to the school, ft seems that as the years go on there are events that seemed to repeat! We had the “tug-o-war” event, the “walk-man sin-a-long” and various eating or drinking events, ft has been our job to do our best in finding things that are new, and something that returning students, or our teaching stiff have never seen before. But as much ns the Student Council does, the success of the pep rallies depends solely upon student participation. The students coming together and having fun and getting into the events are what makes the rallies something that you will remember from W.R. Myers. Abeve left: Pretty in pink.
