Meat and sensory quality of major muscles from Angus, Charolais, and Angus crossbred steers with high and low residual feed intake
Effects of residual feed intake (RFI) and genetic group on growth, carcass, and meat quality characteristics of bovine longissimus lumborum (LL), triceps brachii (TB), semimembranosus (SM), and gluteus medius (GM) muscles were investigated using 72 purebred Angus, purebred Charolais, and Angus crossbred steers (n = 24 per genetic group) classified as either high (inefficient) or low (efficient) RFI (n = 12 high and low RFI steers within genetic group). There was no RFI effect (P > 0.05) on growth, carcass, and meat quality measurements except high RFI steers had the highest dry matter intake (P < 0.05), and low RFI TB was rated as having reduced beef flavour intensity and sustained juiciness (P < 0.05). Purebred Angus and Charolais LL and GM had lower shear force values (P < 0.05) than Angus crossbreds and ageing reduced mean shear force values except in TB. For TB, SM, and GM, Angus crossbred steers had the highest mean beef flavour intensity scores, and Charolais SM and TB were less tender than those of Angus crossbred (P < 0.05). Overall, RFI did not influence most meat quality traits; therefore, low RFI animals may contribute to reducing feed costs or environmental impact without compromising meat quality and palatability.The accepted manuscript in pdf format is listed with the files at the bottom of this page. Seabed foraging by Antarctic krill: Implications for stock assessment, bentho-pelagic coupling, and the vertical transfer of iron
A compilation of more than 30 studies shows that adult Antarctic krill (Euphausia superba) may frequent benthic habitats year-round, in shelf as well as oceanic waters and throughout their circumpolar range. Net and acoustic data from the Scotia Sea show that in summer 2-20% of the population reside at depths between 200 and 2000 m, and that large aggregations can form above the seabed. Local differences in the vertical distribution of krill indicate that reduced feeding success in surface waters, either due to predator encounter or food shortage, might initiate such deep migrations and results in benthic feeding. Fatty acid and microscopic analyses of stomach content confirm two different foraging habitats for Antarctic krill: the upper ocean, where fresh phytoplankton is the main food source, and deeper water or the seabed, where detritus and copepods are consumed. Krill caught in upper waters retain signals of benthic feeding, suggesting frequent and dynamic exchange between surface and seabed. Krill contained up to 260 nmol iron per stomach when returning from seabed feeding. About 5% of this iron is labile, i.e., potentially available to phytoplankton. Due to their large biomass, frequent benthic feeding, and acidic digestion of particulate iron, krill might facilitate an input of new iron to Southern Ocean surface waters. Deep migrations and foraging at the seabed are significant parts of krill ecology, and the vertical fluxes involved in this behavior are important for the coupling of benthic and pelagic food webs and their elemental repositories
Haemorrhoidal artery ligation versus rubber band ligation for the management of symptomatic second-degree and third-degree haemorrhoids (HubBLe): a multicentre, open-label, randomised controlled trial.
BACKGROUND: Optimum surgical intervention for low-grade haemorrhoids is unknown. Haemorrhoidal artery ligation (HAL) has been proposed as an efficacious, safe therapy while rubber band ligation (RBL) is a commonly used outpatient treatment. We compared recurrence after HAL versus RBL in patients with grade II-III haemorrhoids. METHODS: This multicentre, open-label, parallel group, randomised controlled trial included patients from 17 acute UK NHS trusts. We screened patients aged 18 years or older presenting with grade II-III haemorrhoids. We excluded patients who had previously received any haemorrhoid surgery, more than one injection treatment for haemorrhoids, or more than one RBL procedure within 3 years before recruitment. Eligible patients were randomly assigned (in a 1:1 ratio) to either RBL or HAL with Doppler. Randomisation was computer-generated and stratified by centre with blocks of random sizes. Allocation concealment was achieved using a web-based system. The study was open-label with no masking of participants, clinicians, or research staff. The primary outcome was recurrence at 1 year, derived from the patient's self-reported assessment in combination with resource use from their general practitioner and hospital records. Recurrence was analysed in patients who had undergone one of the interventions and been followed up for at least 1 year. This study is registered with the ISRCTN registry, ISRCTN41394716. FINDINGS: From Sept 9, 2012, to May 6, 2014, of 969 patients screened, 185 were randomly assigned to the HAL group and 187 to the RBL group. Of these participants, 337 had primary outcome data (176 in the RBL group and 161 in the HAL group). At 1 year post-procedure, 87 (49%) of 176 patients in the RBL group and 48 (30%) of 161 patients in the HAL group had haemorrhoid recurrence (adjusted odds ratio [aOR] 2·23, 95% CI 1·42-3·51; p=0·0005). The main reason for this difference was the number of extra procedures required to achieve improvement (57 [32%] participants in the RBL group and 23 [14%] participants in the HAL group had a subsequent procedure for haemorrhoids). The mean pain 1 day after procedure was 3·4 (SD 2·8) in the RBL group and 4·6 (2·8) in the HAL group (difference -1·2, 95% CI -1·8 to -0·5; p=0·0002); at day 7 the scores were 1·6 (2·3) in the RBL group and 3·1 (2·4) in the HAL group (difference -1·5, -2·0 to -1·0; p<0·0001). Pain scores did not differ between groups at 21 days and 6 weeks. 15 individuals reported serious adverse events requiring hospital admission. One patient in the RBL group had a pre-existing rectal tumour. Of the remaining 14 serious adverse events, 12 (7%) were among participants treated with HAL and two (1%) were in those treated with RBL. Six patients had pain (one treated with RBL, five treated with HAL), three had bleeding not requiring transfusion (one treated with RBL, two treated with HAL), two in the HAL group had urinary retention, two in the HAL group had vasovagal upset, and one in the HAL group had possible sepsis (treated with antibiotics). INTERPRETATION: Although recurrence after HAL was lower than a single RBL, HAL was more painful than RBL. The difference in recurrence was due to the need for repeat bandings in the RBL group. Patients (and health commissioners) might prefer such a course of RBL to the more invasive HAL. FUNDING: NIHR Health Technology Assessment programme
SHORT COMMUNICATION: Impact of low- and medium-oil corn dried distillers’ grains plus solubles on growth performance of feedlot cattle
During backgrounding, low-oil dried corn distillersâ grains plus solubles (LO-DDGS) resulted in higher DM intake (P=0.002) and increased ADG (P=0.03) in steers compared to medium-oil (MO) DDGS. Inclusion of 20% DDGS tended (P=0.06) to increase ADG compared to 10% DDGS. Calcium signaling genes in association with altitude-induced pulmonary hypertension in Angus cattle
2019 Fall.Includes bibliographical references.This research used multi-omics technology (i.e., RNA-seq, qPCR for gene expression, SNP discovery and validation) to understand the influence of a particular subset genes on altitude-induced pulmonary hypertension susceptibility in Angus cattle. Three research aims were established to test the hypothesis that calcium-related genes may be associated with pulmonary hypertension in beef cattle. Data and samples utilized for the research came from the Colorado State University Beef Improvement Center Angus herd managed at 2,150 m of altitude. Transcriptome data from 6 tissues and 14 hypertensive and normotensive Angus steers were utilized for differential expression and pathway analyses. The objectives of the first aim were to: 1) to estimate and identify differentially expressed genes from RNA-Seq and pathway analyses, and 2) select putative candidate genes to analyze with qPCR (gene expression level). The largest number of DE genes was revealed in aorta (n = 631) and right ventricle (n = 2,183) samples. Top canonical pathways related to calcium signaling or utilization included: synaptic long-term depression, signaling by Rho family GTPases, and oxidative phosphorylation. Genes regulating calcium availability and utilization were expressed differently (log2 fold change > 0.589, < -0.589; P < 0.05) in Angus cattle with and without pulmonary hypertension. Isolated RNA from cardiac muscle (n = 9) and control muscle (n = 2) tissues from hypertensive and normotensive Angus steers were utilized to estimate gene expression using quantitative reverse transcription PCR in the candidate genes from Chapter 3. The objectives of this chapter were: 1) to establish the most appropriate reference genes in cardiac muscle tissues, and 2) to estimate and validated relative gene expression of calcium-related genes in cardiac muscle tissues using qPCR methods. Differences (P < 0.0055) among hypertensive and normotensive steers were estimated for right papillary muscle and right cardiac ventricle tissues (top, middle, and bottom) in candidate genes: ASIC2, EDN1, NOX4, PLA2G4A, RCAN1, and THBS4. Results of the current study validate the expression differences previously established of genes that regulate the availability and utilization of calcium with PH status in Angus steers at high altitude. Variant detection and association analyses were completed with 2 sets of available -omics data to identify opportunities for development of selection tools for reduced susceptibility to PH. The objectives of the third aim were to: 1) detect single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) in the transcriptome of 6 tissues, and 2) identify functional consequences of those variants associated with validated candidate genes from qPCR analyses. Pooled Angus sample analysis revealed 68 SNP in the 6 candidate genes: ASIC2, EDN1, NOX4, PLA2G4A, RCAN1, and THBS4. Thirty-eight SNP were revealed in the hypertensive group and 8 SNP in the normotensive steer group. Ten of the 68 identified SNP are utilized on large density commercially available bovine SNP chips (Illumina BovineHD BeadChip; GeneSeek Genomic Profiler HD; GeneSeek Genomic Profiler HDv2; Affymetrix Axiom Bovine). Analysis of transcriptome data identified SNP within genes regulating calcium availability and utilization, enhancing our understanding of sequence polymorphisms that may be involved in regulating pulmonary hypertension in Angus cattle raised at high altitude. These SNP are available for additional validation and potential use in genetic improvement programs

Evaluation of Calf Growth Patterns and Carcass Traits of Bos Indicus-Bos Taurus Steers
Nellore-Angus steers (N = 572) born in 2009-2013, 2015, and 2019 and Brahman-Angus reciprocal steers (N = 73) born in 2019 and 2020 were evaluated for calf weights and carcass weights (HCW). Calves were born and reared at the McGregor Research Center and included F2, F3, F4, and F5 Nellore-Angus and F1 Brahman-Angus. Calves were weighed at 4 times: within 48 h of birth (BWT), 47 d age (spring-work weight, SWWT), 182 d age (pre-weaning weight, PRWWT), and 212 d age (weaning weight, WWT). Cow age category did not affect calf BWT or SWWT, but influenced PRWWT (P = 0.006) and WWT (P < 0.001); cow age category did not affect calf ADG. Brahman-sired F1 (B �� A) males were 12.7 to 14.1 kg heavier for BWT (P < 0.001) and 14.9 to 19.2 kg heavier for SWWT (P < 0.001) than Angus-sired F1 males (A �� B), but persistence of this difference to weaning varied across year. The correlations between calf traits and HCW were inconsistent across genetic types. No calf weight was correlated with HCW in A �� B crosses, whereas PRWWT was in B �� A crosses (r = 0.44, P = 0.007). BWT showed small to moderate correlation to HCW (0.23 < r < 0.46) in Nellore-Angus crosses; however, subsequent weights (SWWT, PRWWT and WWT) had large correlations with HCW (0.50 < r < 0.79) in the F4 and F5 calves, whereas these correlations varied from 0.24 to 0.37 in F2 and F3 steers. Animals of similar Bos indicus percentage may have quite different calf growth patterns related to HCW. The R2 value for carcass weight based on genetic type, year, and linear regression on harvest age was 0.29; however, the R2 was 0.96 based on genetic type and nonlinear regression of age across multiple calf weights. Multiple carcass traits were predicted with R2 values greater than 0.91 using multiple calf weights beginning at birth and their associated ages. Nonlinear age consideration from birth to weaning appears to be significant for predicting carcass traits in Bos indicus-Bos taurus crosses
