No full textSports Policy in England has undergone radical change in recent years and nowhere is this better exemplified than within the Physical Education Curriculum. The Coalition Government has introduced severe cuts to the sector and a new ethos, placing competition back at the heart of their sporting strategy. This rigorously competitive structure known as the ‘School Games’ promises to build a powerful competitive legacy that will produce individuals ready to ‘win’ in all spheres of life. Such an approach completes an ideological turnaround in Physical Education which was started by the previous Labour Government in the mid-2000s, and culminated with the hosting of the 2012 Olympics in London.
This policy raises the highly contested question about the value of competition within the educational and sporting sphere. An approach based so heavily in competition might produce a generation of young people ready to work hard, accept challenges and win or lose with equal grace. However such an intense focus on competition might instead create individuals obsessed with winning, teaching them to view others as mere obstacles standing in the way of victory, on the playing field and beyond.
This thesis considers and investigates the value of competition in relation to Physical Education, primarily from a philosophical mode of inquiry. It outlines the etymology of the term ‘competition’, and how it has been perceived and valued by other cultures through history. It also demonstrates the way in which political ideology affects the extent to which competition is framed and implemented in the Physical Education curriculum. Finally recommendations are made as to how ‘competition’ ought to be conceived. This points to a moral rather than technical conception that best enables the Aristotelian concept of eudemonia and an ethical community

No full textNa presente dissertação, pretende-se refletir sobre a criatividade literária e a tradução dessa criatividade para o português europeu. Em sentido lato, o conceito de criatividade que aqui utilizamos tem a ver com a ação da autora sobre a língua inglesa, e a apropriação da língua, de forma a criar novas palavras e expressões que nos transportem para um mundo de magia e de feitiços.
Essa “nova“ língua traduz novos valores semânticos e novas categorias, e esses “novos” elementos, que são inseridos na língua pela autora, pressupõem uma atitude de análise e de reflexão sobre a “nova” língua que emerge destas novas experiências linguísticas.
Assim, procedeu-se a uma análise da criatividade do texto-fonte, identificando-se os processos criativos utilizados pela autora para a inovação, formal e semântica, inserida na língua, passando de seguida a uma análise comparativa entre o texto original e o texto traduzido, refletindo sobre as premissas que estão subjacentes à tradução do texto literário.
Na primeira parte da dissertação, depois da contextualização, apresentaram as diferenças entre texto literário e texto técnico e tradução literária e técnica, para depois realçar a importância da criatividade no texto literário e a frente de resistência que esta criatividade pressupõe no trabalho de tradução.
Depois de identificar e analisar os processos de criatividade, realizou-se uma análise comparativa entre o texto-fonte e o texto-alvo que permitiu uma reflexão aprofundada sobre as estratégias de tradução.
Com esta dissertação pretendeu-se contribuir para um aprofundamento da relação entre texto literário, criatividade e tradução e optou-se por escolher obras conhecidas do público juvenil, mas também do público em geral.The following dissertation intends to reflect on the notion of literary creativity and the translation of said creativity into European Portuguese. The concept of creativity that we will use here is related to the author’s influence on the English language and the appropriation of the language, in order to create new words and expressions which carry us into a world of magic and spells.
This “new” language translates new semantic values and categories, and these “new” elements, which are integrated into the language by the author, assume an analytical and reflective attitude regarding the “new” language which emerges from these new linguistic experiences.
Thereby we proceed to an analysis of the creativity from the source text, identifying the creative processes used by the author for the formal and semantic innovation integrated into the language, followed by a comparative analysis between the original and the translated text, reflecting on the assumptions which are implied by literary translation.
In the first part of this dissertation, after the contextualization, the differences between literary and technical translation will be presented, in order to highlight the importance of creativity in the literary text and the challenges that this creativity assumes in terms of translation.
After identifying and analysing the creative processes, a comparative analysis will be carried out between the source text and the target text, which allowed an elaborated reflection on the translation strategies.
This dissertation intends to contribute towards a further development into the relationship between the literary text, creativity and translation, by choosing books well known not only by a young audience, but also the general public
