Powder Diffraction Tells You What Your Material Really Is: Case Studies

    No full text
157 pg.Powder diffraction is a useful tool for examining a number of materials that do not form single crystal for a variety of reasons. Unlike with single crystals, structure determination with powders is not a routine task. In order to demonstrate the ability and efficacy of powder diffraction and its contribution to the understanding the correlation of structures and properties, a series of compound will be presented from a wide range of types of materials: polymorphic materials, cocrystals, metal organic frameworks and magnetic materials. Each of these represent the forefront of the ability of powder diffraction, as they all introduce complications through large numbers of independent molecules and/or disorder. Two families of materials will be presented in detail, coordination polymers containing pyrazine and HF2- and Prussian Blue analogs, that were investigated with powder diffraction. The bifluoride ion, HF2-, contains a two-coordinate H-atom exhibiting the strongest known hydrogen bond. This was used to form materials of the form, Ni(HF2)(pyz)2]X (X = PF6-, SbF6-). These materials are quasi-1D magnets, with magnetic pathways along the biflouride ion. Two polymorphs of the PF6- version were found and have different magnetic behavior, directly related to the structure. Additionally a number of compounds of novel and unknown composition were found and determined, Ni2F2(pyz)3(H2O)4(BF4)2 and NiF(pyz)1.5(H2O)2 TaF6. Cs2MnII[MnII(CN)6] has the archetypal fcc Prussian blue structure, with the cations in the cubic voids. Substitution with smaller alkali ions lead to structural distortions and a marked increase in ordering temperatures. On the other hand, substitution of larger cations, NMe4+ drives a rearrangement of the Mn-CN-Mn network and produce several previously unobserved MnII coordination geometries and a unexpected structure.Advisor(s): Stephens, Peter W. Get PDF
The article reflects dramatic work of Peter Karvaš in the context of existentialist philosophy. It points to the connection between the social situation and the author´s topic choice, emotional engagement and approach to characters. In the article the author defines the basic features of existentialist philosophy in the work of Peter Karvaš providing analysis of selected extracts. In particular the article deals with the issue of how male characters react to the same situation and their motives behind the reaction. The article also reveals subjective view of Karvaš on social events and their impact on people and Karvaš himself

    Joel-Peter Witkin: faces of fantasy

    No full text
The article contains two parts. In the first, the Author describes the theoretical background for analysing the photographs by an American controversial artist – Joel-Peter Witkin; the analysis is carried out in the second part of the paper. The realistic, authenticity-oriented visions of W. Benjamin, R. Barthes or S. Sontag are confronted with Witkin’s creativeness spirit – clearly manipulating in matters of the order of reality (and its rules of appearance) and photographical stuff. This attitude is supported by François Soulages’ views on aesthetics

Peter Singer and Christian ethics. On Charles Comosy’s attempt to find grounds for cooperation

    No full text
Peter Singer and Christian ethics. Beyond polarization Charles Camosy, katolicki etyk z USA. This paper presents an interesting attempt to show that the differences between Peter Singer and Christian ethics are smaller than they appear to be. This view was presented in Peter Singer and Christian ethics. Beyond polarization by Charles Camosy, a Catholic thinker from the US. Camosy wanted to prove, that Peter Singer and ethicists looking for the inspiration in Christian thought can cooperate on many issues and to present their positions as radically polarized is incorrect. This paper is focused on the critical presentation of Camosy’s argument. The research he conducted to support his thesis is useful for understanding the whole discussion between Peter Singer and Christian ethics. His method could be a new standard of discussion between different ethical approaches. In the last part of this paper, it will be suggested, that the author has marginalized some unavoidable obstacles, which make a dialogue between Christian ethics and the famous Australian bioethicsist very difficult. Among them, understanding the notion of person, as well as the reluctance of Christians to pragmaticly compromise in the field of ethics are worth noticing

A chirped-pulse Fourier transform microwave spectrometer has been used to measure the microwave spectra of both mathrmC2H2cdotsAgImathrm{C_{2}H_{2}cdots AgI} and mathrmC2H4cdotsAgImathrm{C_{2}H_{4}cdots AgI}. These complexes are generated via laser ablation at 532 nm of a silver surface in the presence of mathrmCF3Imathrm{CF_{3}I} and either mathrmC2H2mathrm{C_{2}H_{2}} or mathrmC2H4mathrm{C_{2}H_{4}} and argon and are stabilized by a supersonic expansion. Rotational (A0A_{0}, B0B_{0}, C0C_{0}) and centrifugal distortion constants (DeltaJDelta_{J} and DeltaJKDelta_{JK}) of each molecule have been determined as well the nuclear electric quadrupole coupling constants the iodine atom (chiaaleft(mathrmIright)chi_{aa}left(mathrm{I}right) and chibbchiccleft(mathrmIright)chi_{bb}-chi_{cc}left(mathrm{I}right)). The spectrum of each molecule is consistent with a C2mathrmvC_{2mathrm{v}} structure in which the metal atom interacts with the pipi-orbital of the ethene or ethyne molecule. Isotopic substitutions of atoms within the mathrmC2H2mathrm{C_{2}H_{2}} or mathrmC2H4mathrm{C_{2}H_{4}} subunits are in progress and in conjunction with high level textit{ab initio} calculations will allow for accurate determination of the geometry of each molecule. These to complexes are put in the context of the recently studied mathrmH2ScdotsAgImathrm{H_{2}Scdots AgI},footnote{S.Z. Riaz, S.L. Stephens, W. Mizukami, D.P. Tew, N.R. Walker, A.C. Legon, Chem.
