Long terminal repeats act as androgen-responsive enhancers for the PSA-Kallikrein locus
The androgen receptor (AR) signaling pathway is a common therapeutic target for prostate cancer, because it is critical for the survival of both hormone-responsive and castrate-resistant tumor cells. Most of the detailed understanding that we have of AR transcriptional activation has been gained by studying classical target genes. For more than two decades, Kallikrein 3 (KLK3) (prostate-specific antigen) has been used as a prototypical AR target gene, because it is highly androgen responsive in prostate cancer cells. Three regions upstream of the KLK3 gene, including the distal enhancer, are known to contain consensus androgen-responsive elements required for AR-mediated transcriptional activation. Here, we show that KLK3 is one of a specific cluster of androgen-regulated genes at the centromeric end of the kallikrein locus with enhancers that evolved from the long terminal repeat (LTR) (LTR40a) of an endogenous retrovirus. Ligand-dependent recruitment of the AR to individual LTR-derived enhancers results in concurrent up-regulation of endogenous KLK2, KLK3, and KLKP1 expression in LNCaP prostate cancer cells. At the molecular level, a kallikrein-specific duplication within the LTR is required for maximal androgen responsiveness. Therefore, KLK3 represents a subset of target genes regulated by repetitive elements but is not typical of the whole spectrum of androgen-responsive transcripts. These data provide a novel and more detailed understanding of AR transcriptional activation and emphasize the importance of repetitive elements as functional regulatory units.Mitchell G. The evolution of population III stars: a study of selected models with regard to the early enrichment of the interstellar medium
Modelling of the evolution of 15M[sub]sun, 10M[sub]sun, 5M[sub]sun arid 2M[sub]sun stars has been carried out at three different initial compositions that could be thought of as 'population III' - Z=10⁻¹⁰, 10⁻¹⁰ and zero. The effects of mass loss due to a stellar wind have been included in the modelling, the mass loss rates taken from an empirical formula by Nieuwenhuijzen and de Jager (1990). An original and amended form of a FORTRAN 77 quasi-hydrostatic evolutionary code, written by Dr. T. R. Carson and modified by the author of this work, were used to create and evolve the models. The aims of the evolutionary modelling were to confirm that the sensitivity of stellar parameters to the initial metallicity of a star continues to a lower level of Z than has previously been thought, and to provide some evidence that nucleosynthesis and subsequent mass loss in a population III is a plausible mechanism for the prompt enrichment of the early interstellar medium. We find that there is sensitivity of stellar parameters to the initial metallicity Z in the range 0≤Z≤10⁻¹⁰ but this is less apparent in models of intermediate or low masses. During the evolution of the models, no significant loss of enriched material occurs, due to low rates of mass loss and the absence of any 'dredge-up' of enriched material. The results of the modelling were connected with bare-core studies of helium stars to determine the amount and composition of the material that would be returned to the interstellar medium during the endstates of the models. Functions for the rates of enrichment due to a population III and the distribution of mass in a population III were determined and their implications examined. From our results, we find that the enrichment of the interstellar medium due to population III stars must have come about entirely due to rapid mass loss during endstates, such as supernovae, as opposed to a slower rate of mass loss during the lifetime of the stars. We also find that our results indicate that the level of helium enrichment from a population III would be negligible compared to that due to cosmological mechanisms. Our distribution functions for a population III indicate that massive stars are very much fewer by number that would be expected for stars in our epoch. Overall, we can consider that a primordial population III can be considered a plausible mechanism for a prompt enrichment of metals in the early universe, but not for the prompt enrichment of helium

Hello Rebels Family!
It's easy to believe that the rich and famous are born well...rich and famous. Not so! On the
way to being famous...Gwen Stefani worked at Dairy Queen, Madonna was fired from Dunkin'
Donuts, Brad Pitt handed out flyers wearing a chicken suit for El Polio Loco, Rachel McAdams
was a server at McDonald's and Beyonce was swept up hair in her mother's salon. There are
jobs you will have before you 'make it' too. Some you will enjoy. And some - not so much.
On my way to becoming a teacher I was a waiter, a landscaper, a tree planter, and a
bartender. Some of these jobs I liked and some I hated. But ALL of these jobs brought me to
the profession I love and shaped who I have become.
At W.R. Myers High School we are proud of being a school where every student can find an
avenue for success and in being part of a community where everyone in the Rebel family
strives to find the best in themselves and others. As Christian Larson said, "Believe in yourself
and all that you are. Know that there is something inside you that is greater than any obstacle."
Remember that you are the star of your own life and that, with hard work, your dreams will become reality!

Wow! What a year! I chose "REBEL RESILIENCE" as the yearbook theme this year as I thought it was rather fitting given our
current 'COVID-1 9' situation. Some of you are already VERY RESILIENT, while others may feel like you are not. One thing is
for sure - you can always WORK on becoming MORE resilient.
Here are 10 ways you can work on becoming more resilient:
Have the courage to be imperfect
Take time for yourself
Sign up for that course, join that club
Be active every day in as many ways as you can
Spend time with people who make you feel good
Laugh out loud each day
Invite your neighbor (friend) over for a cup of tea (chat)
Do one thing now that you've been putting off
Focus more on things you can control

Thank you to all those who gave me a big smile (or at least didn't run away) when I put the camera in front of your face! I
apologize to those teams I missed getting photos of (that actually had the opportunity to play). Because this year is unlike any
other, I also decided to change up the color scheme from the traditional red/black/yellow! I would love some feedback on
this decision (love it/dislike it etc).
A huge shout-out to a stellar group of grade 9's who helped me with the yearbook in June (Madisen and Bryden O'Connor,
Kiernan Gyepesi, Will Evanson, Madison Reid, Heston Bevans and Allen Clements). Thank you specifically to Bryden O'Connor
for creating the color graphic used throughout the yearbook.
Some of the quotes found through out the yearbook were from the survey you filled out in the spring, which in, most cases,
does not have the author information and therefore simply states the grade level the quote came from. All other quotes with
Author Unknown" were found online and in most cases didn't have any author information either. In any case, my hope is
that they will either put a smile on your face, make you go 'hmm' or possibly even take time to pause and reflect on the

It was a sad reality that we all had to face this year with little to no athletic
competitions across the Province for High School Sport. But very thankfully, and
in true Rebel Spirit, we made the most of the situation and were able to organize
and provide our student-athletes with a few opportunities to participate in sport.
The Rebels made teams and practiced as much as they possibly could in football,
volleyball, cross-country, golf, basketball, and curling. Unfortunately, a few of our
traditional sports were not able to get off the ground in the Spring, but hopefully
that will only fuel the fire of the up and coming athletes for next season! We want
to give a big thanks to all those student-athletes and coaches who committed to
one or more of our teams during these tough, unprecedented circumstances, and
a special shout out to all the Grade 1 2 student-athletes for all of their years of
dedication to High School Sport!

The W.R. Myers Concert and
Stage Bands were unable to
perform this year due to COVID,
but we were lucky enough to still
be able to play our instruments.
Vince Gassi, a composer from
Toronto, was commissioned by
the W.R. Myers Band Parent
Association to write a piece for
the Concert Band. The band
students met with Mr. Gassi via
Zoom in October to talk to him
about the piece and the writing
process. He completed the piece
for us in January and we began
working on it. Again the band
students met with Mr. Gassi on
Zoom for him to listen to us play
and give feedback. But
unfortunately due to the COVID
restrictions, we were unable to
premier the piece. Hopefully,
next year we will be able to play
Tomorrow Shines Soon.

..had the opportunity to be a part of the "Minister's Youth Council." The Minister's Youth Council consists of 40 junior and senior high school students (in
Alberta) all of which have many diverse interests, perspectives, and backgrounds. Students get the opportunity to share their perspectives on many different
topics in education. Over the last couple of years students on this council have worked with the Alberta Government Education Department, MLA's,
industry professionals, teachers and school boards to help better education in out province. Specifically, these students helped inform a vaping policy from
Edmonton Public Schools, assisted in the creation of Bill 1 9 which aims to reduce vaping use in Alberta and helped shape the Ministerial Order on Student
Learning.

Sayge Turcato was in the Alberta
High School Rodeo Provincials
Finals at the beginning of June
she went into the finals as the
season leader in the Barrel
Racing and she was 8th in
District 1 for the Breakaway
Roping with a few go round wins
she ended up winning the
Alberta Finals in the Barrel
Racing and placing 4th in the
Breakaway. That qualified Sayge
to go to the National High School
Rodeo Finals 2021 in Lincoln,
Nebraska.
Way to go Sayge!!
Kayce Liptak has also had a great showing this year
so far. She placed 2nd at Provincials, just behind
Sayce Turcato. This meant that she also qualified to
go to the National High School Rodeo Finals 2021
in Lincoln, Nebraska.

after a short shutdown the Lacrosse league got the green light to play. And play they did! If you enjoy watching
playing a high-intensity, high-contact sport, then this is a game for you! With the Lacrosse league in its infancy in
^ber (this is just the second season of play) the team did a stellar job working on basic skills, learning plays, and

The influences of lateral ground-tilting on channel morphology and alluvial architecture
This thesis characterises and quantifies the influence of lateral ground-tilting on rivers in terms of: i) channel planform changes and migration style, ii) temporal and
spatial patterns of channel movement, and, iii) the preserved alluvial architecture formed by aggrading fluvial systems. A dual field and physical modelling approach is used to examine the impact of tilting on river channels at a range of temporal and spatial scales. Fieldwork was undertaken on the Carson River, Nevada, USA which has been proposed as an example of avulsive downdip channel movement towards an active basin-bounding fault (Leeder, 1993). Froude scale models of both meandering and braided rivers were established in a stream table which could simulate aggradation and be tilted laterally.
Quantification of the Holocene history of the Carson River, combined with independent dating of movements on the basin-bounding fault, allows the alluvial-tectonic relationships to be analysed. In addition to local tectonics, factors which may also affect channel movement such as climate change, regional periods of channel incision and
intrinsic channel avulsion are investigated. The Carson River is shown to possess a more complex spatial relationship with fault movement and lateral tilting than that envisaged by Leeder (1993). Phases of channel onlap towards the locus of subsidence after fault events
are separated by channel offlap during periods of tectonic quiescence. In addition, lag times between faulting and channel movement appear to be short.
The preserved alluvial architecture modelled in flume experiments on aggrading braided streams is subdivided into a number of key depositional niches and their
geometries quantified. A number of cross-stream and vertical variations in niche geometries can be attributed to the timing, magnitude and frequency of imposed lateral
tilting, and confirm Leeder and Alexander's (1987) conceptual model of progressive downdip channel movement in response to lateral tilting. No unambiguous relationship
between channel bend parameters and imposed lateral ground-tilting could be defined in the meandering river experiments because the rate and type of bend development masks the impact of tilting. However, the rate of channel movement towards the downtilted margin appears to increase after tilting and be directly related to tilt magnitude.
A new model of progressive downdip channel migration in response to lateral tilting is presented which resolves the incompatibility of previous models. In addition, a
criterion based on the rate of tilting is proposed in order to distinguish between channels that respond to tectonic tilting either by avulsion or by gradual downdip migratio
EphB4 localises to the nucleus of prostate cancer cells
The EphB4 receptor tyrosine kinase is over-expressed in a variety of different epithelial cancers including prostate where it has been shown to be involved in survival, migration and angiogenesis. We report here that EphB4 also resides in the nucleus of prostate cancer cell lines. We used in silico methods to identify a bipartite nuclear localisation signal (NLS) in the extracellular domain and a monopartite NLS sequence in the intracellular kinase domain of EphB4. To determine whether both putative NLS sequences were functional, fragments of the EphB4 sequence containing each NLS were cloned to create EphB4NLS-GFP fusion proteins. Localisation of both NLS-GFP proteins to the nuclei of transfected cells was observed, demonstrating that EphB4 contains two functional NLS sequences. Mutation of the key amino residues in both NLS sequences resulted in diminished nuclear accumulation. As nuclear translocation is often dependent on importins we confirmed that EphB4 and importin-α can interact. To assess if nuclear EphB4 could be implicated in gene regulatory functions potential EphB4-binding genomic loci were identified using chromatin immunoprecipitation and Lef1 was confirmed as a potential target of EphB4-mediated gene regulation. These novel findings add further complexity to the biology of this important cancer-associated receptor
Health Hazard Evaluation Report: HETA-85-329-1708: R. T. French Company; Springfield, Missouri
The United Food and Commercial Workers at the R. T. French Company (SIC-2099), Springfield, Missouri requested an evaluation of worker exposure to ethylene-oxide (75218) and methyl-bromide (74839). The facility employs 375 workers and was established exclusively for spice handling and manufacturing. Thirteen personal air samples for ethylene-oxide ranged in concentration from .01 to 1.07 parts per million (ppm). The three samples which exceeded the OSHA standard of 1ppm were from workers unloading sacks of sterilized spices from inside trucks. Twelve environmental air samples for ethylene-oxide ranged from less than .01 to 15ppm, with the highest being obtained from inside the trucks during unloading operations. No methyl- bromide was detected in personal samples on the packaging line and the two area samples on top of the tote bins in the fumigation room showed 12.5 and 45ppm. The author concludes that uncontrolled conditions which exist may result in exposure to the compounds; during this survey, the levels to which workers were exposed would not represent a health hazard. It is recommended that a means be devised to ventilate the trucks carrying spices during the trip from the contract sterilizer. Trucks should be monitored during unloading to be certain that levels of ethylene-oxide are not rising. The ventilation system in the fumigation room should be reviewed. The manner in which totes are treated with methyl-bromide should also be reconsidered
