Interdisciplinary approaches to the Scandinavian heritage of North-West England
No full textA wide variety of approaches based on historical, archaeological, place-name, linguistic, physical, and genetic tools can collectively provide a detailed understanding of the Vikings in peace and in war. This chapter and the rest of the book that follows focuses on one particularly exciting area of the Viking world, namely the north-west of England, an area where we now know them to have settled in large numbers. We take an overview of the technologies and approaches available and describe how new technologies are helping us to better understand what the Vikings left behind in terms of language, culture, archaeology, place-names, and genetic profiles of the people living there today

Letter to W. E. Halley, April 23, 1920
No full textThis letter dated April 23, 1920, from an unknown writer to W. E. Halley of the Harding for President Club, discusses fellow Republican presidential candidate General Leonard Wood and his stance on the sale of alcohol in the U.S. military. The author writes that Wood, as chief of staff of the U.S. Army, proposed in 1913 that the federal government restore permission to sell beer and wine at army canteens, which Harding refers to as the "army saloon." Temperance and prohibition were major issues addressed by candidates during their presidential campaigns, and although Harding is not a prohibition supporter, the writer notes that he authored the amendment to the Conscription Bill prohibiting the sale of alcohol to servicemen.
This letter is part of the Warren G. Harding Papers (MSS 345). This collection includes correspondence, business records, and other materials documenting Harding’s business career as owner and editor-in-chief of The Daily Marion Star, as well as the various stages of his political career. A significant portion of the collection, and what’s available on Ohio Memory, highlights his 1920 presidential campaign, spanning just before publicly announcing his candidacy to handily defeating Ohio Governor James M. Cox in the election. Correspondents include both Ohio and national businessmen, political figures, and ordinary citizens writing with questions, support, congratulatory notes, and campaign advice. Some of the most interesting insights into the tumultuous political climate in the U.S., the extreme factionalism within the Republican Party in Ohio, and Harding’s campaign strategies are described in letters between Harding and his campaign manager, Harry M. Daugherty. Some of the topics addressed include women’s suffrage, Prohibition, the League of Nations, African American representation and issues, and lingering peace negotiations following World War I
