Get PDFStephen L. Carter is one of America’s leading public intellectuals. Throughout his career, Professor Carter has helped to shape the national debate on issues ranging from the role of religion in our politics and culture to the role of integrity and civility in our daily lives. He is the William Nelson Cromwell Professor of Law at Yale University. He served as a law clerk for two of the great veterans of the civil rights movement, including Justice Thurgood Marshall of the U.S. Supreme Court. A member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the American Law Institute, he holds seven honorary degrees. He has published five novels and is the author of seven critically acclaimed nonfiction books on law, ethics and politics, including this year’s FYS common book, Civility: Manners, Morals, and the Etiquette of Democracy
