Characterization of LIM Kinase and Activity in Early Amphibian Embryos

    No full text
EphA4 is a cellular receptor that functions in mediating tissue interactions in embryonic development. The downstream effectors of EphA4 are mainly unknown, although previous research has indicated that the enzyme p160ROCK is one of the downstream mediators in the pathway. LIM kinase is an enzyme that is activated by p160ROCK. We have hypothesized that LIM kinase acts downstream of p160ROCK in the signaling pathway. Our results showed that LIM kinase is present and activated during development when EphA4 is active in the embryo, which is consistent with a role for LIM kinase in EphA4 signaling. Further testing is necessary to determine if LIM kinase has an active role in EphA4 signaling

Zhang Yimou's 'Blood simple':cannibalism, remaking and translation in world cinema

    No full text
Zhang Yimou’s A Woman, A Gun and A Noodle Shop (2009) remakes the Coen brothers’ Blood Simple (1984) in a way that re-imagines the earlier film in a Chinese setting, adapting and recreating the narrative, but the film cannot be regarded as being aimed solely at a Chinese audience, as it was also released in the United States and United Kingdom. Drawing from translation studies and film studies, this article analyses how Zhang’s film adapts its source material, particularly its tendency to make explicit elements that were left implicit in the source text. The idea of cannibalization, from Brazilian modernist theory, helps explain the ambiguous orientation of the remake as both homage to and localization of the source text. This hybridity was not well received by American audiences and shows how the movie’s connection to both Zhang and the Coens leads to a dual voice in the film. The analysis demonstrates how translation and cross-cultural adaptation enrich ideas of world cinema

    Lim-inf convergence and its compactness

    No full text
Abstract- We describe the Mizar formalization of the proof of compactness of lim-inf convergence given in [W33] according to [CCL]. Lim-inf convergence formalized in [W28] is a Moore-Smith convergence investigated in [Y6] and involves the concept of nets. The proof is based on the equivalence of two approaches to convergence in topological spaces: filter convergence and Moore-Smith (net) convergence. The equivalence is worked out in [Y19] and different characterizations of compactness are also given there. These efforts are a continuation of the international project of formalizing the theory of continuous lattices headed by the first author
