The metro and the city: interaction with the urban landscape in the new underground stations in Valencia 1995-2010

    No full text
The first stations of the Valencia subway lines were accessible by conventional metro entrances, stairs leading to an underground corridor or hallway, invisible from the street and from where you came, directly or through other corridors, to the platforms. In the new metro lines from the network of FGV Ferrocarriles de la Generalitat Valenciana (Railways of the Regional Government of Valencia) built between 1995 and 2010 the architectural design of the stations is addressed in a different way from design strategies that seek greater interaction with the public space and the urban environment. To expose these strategies of interaction with the urban environment, the paper uses as case studies several stations designed by the author, belonging to lines 3 and 5 of the Valencia Metro network.Pérez Igualada, J. A poesia dos Metafísicos : modos da expressão e o efeito de "awareness" : I - wit

    No full text
In this first of a series of articles on the same subject, the focus is on Wit. Some critical attitudes towards Wit, either as a textual, function or as a reading effect, are considered to be of particular importance. The author refers to some seventeenth and twentieth century poems, thereby suggesting that a proper use of Wit may, through the ambiguity, complexity or extent of a poetical statement, lead one from the act of reading to a moment of awareness

Purpose This letter to the editor is in response to a review by de Wit et al. (2016), “Characteristics of Auditory Processing Disorders: A Systematic Review,” published in April 2016 by Journal of Speech, Language, and Hearing Research. Conclusion The author argues that the conclusions in the de Wit et al. (2016) review are unfortunate in light of advances made in the clinical diagnosis and treatment of bottom-up auditory processing disorders in children. </jats:sec

Development of an Airborne Ka-band FMCW Synthetic Aperture Radar

    No full text
In the field of airborne earth observation there is a special interest in lightweight, low cost imaging radars of high resolution. Such radar systems could play an essential role in small-scale earth observation applications such as the monitoring of dikes, watercourses or areas in which gas pipes or electrical power lines are buried. In order to be successful, such systems should consume little power and they should be small enough to be mounted on very small airborne platforms. Moreover, in order to be of interest to the civil market, cost effectiveness is mandatory. The novel combination of compact frequency modulated continuous wave (FM-CW) radar technology and high resolution synthetic aperture radar (SAR) processing techniques should pave the way for the development of such a small and cost effective imaging radar. Although SAR techniques have already been successfully applied to coherent pulse radars, the practicability of FM-CW SAR is not evident. In pulse SAR signal processing it is assumed that the radar platform is stationary throughout the transmission of a pulse and the reception of the corresponding echo. This so-called stop-and-go approximation is valid since the transmitted pulses are very short. FM-CW radars transmit relatively long sweeps which is why the stop-and-go approximation may no longer be valid. In that case, the change of range during the transmission of a sweep and the reception of the corresponding echo should be taken into account. The effect of the continuous platform motion is investigated by deriving the response of an FM-CW SAR system to a single stationary point target. This investigation shows that the platform motion induces a Doppler frequency shift throughout the SAR observation time. A modification to the range migration compensation is proposed to compensate the Doppler frequency shift at the same time.IRCTRElectrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Scienc

Women's experiences buying sex in Australia – Egalitarian powermoves

    No full text
Evidence in this article addresses two popular political and scholarly concepts, female sexuality and sex-worker rights, which limit gender equality. Through description of interviews with 21 diverse women buying sexual services in Australia, and examination using interpretative phenomenological analysis, we introduce new ideas about women's therapeutic and pleasure-based motivations to buy sex and their concerns about their safety, money, laws, and stigma. Interviewees of the study described feeling transformative powers in pleasure as they gained skills and confidence to initiate, negotiate and control sexual activity. The experiences of the women who bought sex in this study directly challenge concepts of female sexual passivity and objectification generally and specifically in commercial sex settings. This article also promotes aspects of the sex industry as beneficial to society and demonstrates that destigmatisation and decriminalisation of the sex industry has potential to reduce harms experienced by sex workers and their clients. © The Author(s) 2020

    VVV-WIT-07: Another Boyajian’s star or a Mamajek’s object?

We report the discovery of VVV-WIT-07, a unique and intriguing variable source presenting a sequence of recurrent dips with a likely deep eclipse in 2012 July. The object was found serendipitously in the near-IR data obtained by the VISTA Variables in the Vía Láctea (VVV) ESO public survey. Our analysis is based on VVV variability, multicolour, and proper motion (PM) data. Complementary data from the VVV eXtended survey as well as archive data and spectroscopic follow-up observations aided in the analysis and interpretation of VVV-WIT-07. A search for periodicity in the VVV Ks-band light curve of VVV-WIT-07 results in two tentative periods at P ∼ 322 d and P ∼ 170 d. Colours and PM are consistent either with a reddened main-sequence (MS) star or a pre-MS star in the foreground disc. The near-IR spectra of VVV-WIT-07 appear featureless, having no prominent lines in emission or absorption. Features found in the light curve of VVV-WIT-07 are similar to those seen in J1407 (Mamajek’s object), a pre-MS K5 dwarf with a ring system eclipsing the star or, alternatively, to KIC 8462852 (Boyajian’s star), an F3 IV/V star showing irregular and aperiodic dips in its light curve. Alternative scenarios, none of which is fully consistent with the available data, are also briefly discussed, including a young stellar object, a T Tauri star surrounded by clumpy dust structure, an MS star eclipsed by a nearby extended object, a self-eclipsing R CrB variable star, and even a long-period, high-inclination X-ray binary. © 2018 The Author(s).Universidad Autónoma de Chil

Civil Engineering and Geoscience
