An optimal randomized online algorithm for the -Canadian Traveller Problem on node-disjoint paths
We consider the -Canadian Traveller Problem, which asks for a shortest path between two nodes and in an undirected graph, where up to edges may be blocked. An online algorithm learns about a blocked edge when reaching one of its endpoints. Recently, it has been shown that no randomized online algorithm can be better than -competitive, even if all --paths are node-disjoint. We show that the bound is tight by constructing a randomized online algorithm for this case that achieves the ratio against an oblivious adversary and is therefore best possible.DFG RTG [1703
Validity of Bender-Gestalt test signs measuring depressive, antisocial, and impulsive acting out personality characteristics
The Bender-Gestalt test is one of the most widely used psychological tests in clinical practice. However, very few empirical studies have investigated its projective use with adults. The purpose of the present study was to replicate a study conducted by Sellbom et al. (2001), which examined distortions of the Bender-Gestalt hypothesized to measure antisocial, impulsive, and depressive characteristics. It was found that the findings in Sellbom et al. (2001) were partially replicated, indicating that certain distortions, especially in conjunction, were significantly related to antisocial characteristics. The author suggests that the Bender-Gestalt could potentially be used as a screening measure for antisocial characteristics, but not to measure impulsive and depressive characteristics.Thesis (M.A.)Department of Psychological Scienc
The clamp bender: a new testing equipment for thin glass
The bending strength of flat glass panels including the effects of their edges, is commonly determined by means of the four-point bending test method. This is an established and reliable method. However, when testing glass thinner than 3 mm, large deformation may occur. This means that the calculated stresses might not correspond to the actual, as the hypothesis behind the small deformation theory does no longer hold. Furthermore, it might occur that the specimen slips out of the supports, compelling the testing impossible. An alternative method, suitable for thin glass, consists of inducing an increasing curvature from flat until fracture. The curvature is to be constant along the length of the specimen at any time. The stress at fracture is calculated by knowing the corresponding radius or the applied bending moment. The equipment capable of performing this test is the clamp bender whereby the glass is held by two clamps at the specimen’s ends. Rotational and translational movement combine to uniaxially bend the glass as desired. This paper explores the validity of the clamp bender for testing thin glass by comparing the results generated by three different test setups developed at TU Darmstadt, TU Dresden and AGC. The three individually developed clamp bender setups follow the same principle, but present a few differences in actuation. Using these three clamp bender test setups, identical series of thin glass specimens were tested. The results showed that the glass fracture strength data coming from different setups match quite well one another. This paper discusses the different test setups and compares the obtained glass strength data. It contributes to the development of a universally applicable, simple and reliable test method for thin glass.Green Open Access added to TU Delft Institutional Repository 'You share, we take care!' - Taverne project https://www.openaccess.nl/en/you-share-we-take-care Otherwise as indicated in the copyright section: the publisher is the copyright holder of this work and the author uses the Dutch legislation to make this work public.Applied Mechanic
Du « test de Bender » comme épreuve projective
Jean Bouisson, The « Bender test » as a Projective Test.
After a brief review about the « Bender test » from its beginning to its utilisation in a projective perspective, the author tries to show why this test represents an interesting element in the test battery of the clinical psychologist. He also clarifies the specificity of the test in comparison with the Rorschach and the TAT and asserts its relevance as to the study of the style components.

Bender Shetler, Jan. — Telling Our Own Stories
The present volume by the historian Jan Bender Shetler is a publication of the African Sources for the African History Series whose purpose is to cover the history of the African continent. Contrary to West, Southern, and Central Africa, publications of historical texts about East Africa are very limited. TellingOurOwnStories tries to remedy this lack of historical data. It presents a large collection of written local stories from the South Mara region of Tanzania collected by the author hers..
Do initial conditions persist between firms? : an analysis of firm-entry cohort effects and job losers using matched employer-employee data
"Influential studies have suggested that initial conditions can have persistent effects on workers' careers within firms. It is a longstanding question among economists whether such lasting wage differentials among firms and industries are due to persistent deviations of wages from workers' skills due to contracting and market frictions, or whether they arise from permanent differences among workers' skills. However, there is currently little representative evidence on firm-entry cohort effects and few explicit tests of alternative explanations. We use information on the universe of workers from a large German manufacturing sector from matched employer- employee records to show that firm-entry cohort effects are a pervasive phenomenon for the firms we study. The cohort effects we estimate are highly heterogeneous across firms and slowly fade over time. We also find that wage premiums on the past job are lost at job displacement, and that initial positive effects on wage levels at the new job fades over time. This suggests that at least part of firm-entry cohort effects arise from transitory rents, and that initial effects from previous wages fade as workers' search for better jobs." The wage effects of entering motherhood : a within-firm matching approach
"We analyze the wage effects of employment breaks of women entering motherhood using a novel within-firm matching approach where mothers' wages upon return to the job are compared with those of their female colleagues within the same firm. Using an administrative German data set we investigate three different matching procedures based on information two years before birth: (1) exact matching on individual characteristics, (2) propensity score matching and (3) a combined procedure of exact and propensity score matching. Our results yield new insights into the nature of the wage penalty associated with motherhood, since we find first births to reduce women's wages by 16 to 19 percent, regardless of the matching procedure applied. Neglecting the firm identifier and matching across all firms, however, yields a wage cut of 30 percent. Furthermore, we can show that the wage loss increases with the duration of the employment break." Retracing Jewish Roots on the North Dakota Prairie
In this program Rebecca Bender, co-author with her father, Kenneth Bender, shares lessons she learned about life, family, and faith while writing the book Still, which is an account of five generations of a Jewish family, first as the Benderskys fleeing persecution in Russia and later as the Benders living and working as farmers and storekeepers on the Dakota prairie and, later still, in other locations and occupations. The book answers the question posed to Rebecca by a reporter: “Are you still Jewish?” In 2019 Still won the gold medal in the category of religion and philosophy from the Midwest Independent Publishers Association, and in 2020 it won first place in the internationally-competitive Independent Press Award in the category of Judaism. Rebecca Bender graduated from the University of Minnesota Law School and then practiced law in Minnesota as a securities litigator for 18 years before turning her attention to the research that went into her book Still. Her prose and poetry have appeared in a number of journals, including the Journal of the American Historical Society of Germans from Russia, the North Dakota Quarterly, the Jewish Book Council’s Paper Brigade Daily, and The Forward
