No full textQuesto commento critico discute il recente lavoro di Stephan Lessenich sulla democrazia. L'articolo sostiene che per comprendere i confini strutturali della democrazia capitalista del “trentennio glorioso”, dobbiamo scoprire criticamente i limiti della democrazia liberale. L'articolo sostiene che l'assenza di una dimensione di democratizzazione economica è il risultato del restringimento del significato del “politico” da parte della democrazia liberale. Inoltre, definire la democrazia in termini di diritti non tiene in debito conto il modo in cui questi si sono sviluppati storicamente e recentemente, né chiarisce la loro relazione con la libertà negativa. La dialettica insostenibile a livello ambientale della democrazia e lo svalutazione del lavoro riproduttivo derivano dalla costituzione di una sfera economica definita in senso ristretto, dalla quale le "attività riproduttive" sono escluse. Infine, il testo riflette su cosa dovrebbe comportare "democratizzare la democrazia"

Her previous books are Backtalk and Personal Effects, both published by Alice James Books She has received fellowships in poetry from the Massachusetts Artists Foundation and the National Endowment for the Arts. Her poems appear in many journals including Agni, The American Poetry Review, The Kenyon Review, and Ploughshares. She has published book reviews in Belles Lettres, The Boston Globe, The Boston Review, Prairie Schooner and The Women’s Review of Books She teaches in the Program in Writing and Humanistic Studies at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. This year she is Visiting Poet at Pennsylvania State University. The fairy circles of Kaokoland (North-West Namibia) – origin, distribution, and characteristics
No full textEmbedded in species-poor grasslands, fairy circles are circular or sub-circular patches devoid of any vegetation. Characteristically, the circumference of each circle shows a band of more densely packed taller tussocks within a shorter, more sparse grassland matrix. The average diameter of the circles is between 5–8 m. Restricted to sites showing deep sandy deposits, in Namibia, fairy circles occur in a broken belt in the pro-Namib from southern Angola to the Orange River (Republic of South Africa). The distribution of fairy circles is significantly limited to areas with an average of 50–100 mm of annual precipitation. Based on remote sensing methods and expeditions, a map of the distribution area of fairy circles in Kaokoland (NW Namibia) was drawn up. The map indicates that fairy circles are more widely spread over the western parts of Kaokoland than previously re-ported. The two different active biological hypotheses of the fairy circles ’ origin comprise 1. the al-lelopathic interaction between Euphorbia damarana and the contemporary herbaceous vegetation (Theron 1979) and 2. the involvement of harvester termites (Moll 1994). Both hypotheses are dis-cussed and a model about the origin and dynamic of fairy circles is presented. This model includes the foraging behaviour of the harvester termite Hodotermes mossambicus which is the prime causal factor in forming the fairy circles of Kaokoland. The (im)possibilities of teaching-learning freedom
No full textTwenty-one years after a free and democratic South Africa was constituted, it seems as if South Africans are still in limbo. In this article, the author explores the essence of freedom as conceptualised by Arendt (1958, 1966, 1900, 2006) and the (im)possibilities of teaching-learning freedom towards continual new beginnings. Freedom and new beginnings are actualised when humans speak and act in equal difference. The possibilities of teaching-learning freedom rely on the acknowledgement of both the burden and the power of freedom and in unexpected acts of compassion and forgiveness in the teacher:child relationship (Becker 2013, 26). Using a phenomenological approach, the author explores qualitative data from the research project Human rights literacy: A quest for meaning (Roux 2012) to explore the (im)possibilities of teaching-learning freedom
