    No full text
If Heymann Steinthal develops a science of language (Sprachwissenschaft) which seeks to render the extraordinary diversity of languages, he still sets up a hierarchy between them. For him it is a linguistic, historical and cultural fact that the German language has reached an unmatched pre-eminence with Goethe and Humboldt. Steinthal, Jew and extra-ordinary professor at the Berlin University has to watch the emergence of the antisemitic barbary and the incredible decay of a culture and a knowledge he never ceases to defend. From 1860 on the great project of the Zeitschrift fiir Völkerpsychologie leads him, with his friend and brother-in-law Moritz Lazarus, to take the defense of Judaism in the Germany of his time. Cultural and political resistance are therefore present in the very heart of his scholarly linguistic research. The article strie-ves to show the links between the religious Steinthal at the Hochschule für die Wissenschaft des Judentums and Steinthal, positivist scientist at the Berlin University. And this link exists :it is the parallel he establishes between the ahistorical language of the Bible, which is the language of a minority, and the historical conquering language of Goethe and Humboldt, but this possible relation seems to be payed in the case of Steinthal as well as in the case of Moritz Lazarus with a deep denial of Yiddish, which was their first language

    Humboldt - Steinthal - Labriola - Gramsci

    No full text
The article intends to illustrate the contribution of Antonio Gramsci to the development of a philosophy of language within the Marxist tradition. In this perspective, it examines the marginal position of the language sphere in the thought of Hegel and Marx, and describes the peculiar position of the Italian philosopher Antonio Labriola, who elaborated the philosophy of language of Wilhelm von Humboldt, and the “Volkpsychologie” of Heymann Steinthal, in a historical materialistic direction

    Hugo Steinthal Collection 1922-1958

The bulk of the collection consists of extensive research notes for a history of the Saarland and Lorraine and their Jewish communities from the 14th century until 1938, with a notable gap for the 19th century. For the most part, these notes are handwritten annotations by Steinthal in chronological order; he would list important events for each year, sometimes supplemented by excerpts from publications. For the 20th century, the notes also include related publications such as articles, annoucements and reports as well as correspondence. A lot of materials are related to the Saarland referendum of 1935. It seems like most of the material was gathered in the 1930s. The collection also holds Steinthal's doctoral dissertation on the status of Jews in the Merovingian and Carolingian empires (5th through 9th centuries) as well as a photograph and correspondence with Zvi Avneri of the Leo Baeck Institute Jerusalem.Hugo Steinthal was born in Saarbruecken on July 27, 1893. His parents were Josef Steinthal and Fanny (nee Stolzberg). In 1914, he moved to Freiburg where he studied history and philosophy. Later in 1914 he joined the army, and was discharged in 1916 due to an injury. He continued his studies in Freiburg, Munich and Breslau, where he received his doctorate in 1921. He was rabbi in Saarbruecken until his immigration to France in 1935. After the World War II, he returned to Germany and died in Saarbruecken in 1961.Photographs removed to Photograph Collectiondigitize

Cassirer and Steinthal on Expression and the Science of Language

    Get PDF
Ernst Cassirer’s focus on the expressive function of language should be read, not in the context of Carnap’s debate with Heidegger, but in the context of the earlier work of Chajim (Heymann) Steinthal. Steinthal distinguishes the expressive form of language, when language is studied as a natural phenomenon, from language as a logical, inferential system. Steinthal argues that language always can be expressed in terms of logical inference. Thus, he would disagree with Heidegger, just as Carnap does. But, Steinthal insists, that is not to say that language, as a natural phenomenon, is exhausted by logic or by the place of terms or relations in inferential structures. Steinthal’s “form” of linguistic “expression” is an early version of Cassirer’s “expressive function” for language. The expressive function, then, should not be seen to place a barrier between Carnap and Cassirer. Rather, Steinthal and Cassirer deal with a question that, as far as I know, Carnap does not address directly: how should philosophers analyze human language as a natural phenomenon, as a part of our expression as animals? And how does that expression determine the semantic categories, kind terms, and other structures that develop within, and characterize, human language itself
