Interaction of Bombolitin-iii With Phospholipid Monolayers and Liposomes and Effect On the Activity of Phospholipase A(2)
This study is focused on the characterization of the interaction of the amphiphilic peptide bombolitin III (from the bumblebee Megabombus pennsylvanicus) with phospholipid monolayers and vesicles. It is shown that due to the amphiphilic character of its alpha-helical conformation this water-soluble peptide is able to interact in an ordered fashion with phospholipid organized structures. Depending on the temperature, the subphase, and the particular phosphatidylcholine used, the mixed peptide-phospholipid monolayers can be homogeneous or display phase separation. This behavior was observed by means of the Langmuir film balance technique, coupled with an epifluorescence microscope. In well-defined conditions it is possible to visualize the formation of phase-separated peptide domains at the air-water interface and to study the effect of their presence on the organization of the lipid. The action of phospholipase Ap at the lipid-peptide interface was also followed by means of fluorescence microscopy: some evidence that the enzyme preferentially hydrolyzes the phospholipid that is in contact with the peptide is presented. Furthermore, the presence of bombolitin III in L-alpha-DLPC monolayers causes an increase in the initial speed of degradation with phospholipase A(2). These results are in agreement with previous findings that show that the bombolitins are activators in vitro of phospholipase A(2). Experiments were also performed with peptide fragments corresponding to the alpha-helical sequences of the protein uteroglobin: despite some amphiphilic character, these peptides do not interact strongly with phospholipid monolayers. Only one of these peptides (corresponding to the helix 4-14 in uteroglobin) is adsorbed in the monolayer in a similar fashion to bombolitin III but does not cause an increase in the activity of phospholipase A(2)

Dynamic simulation and control considerations on gas sweetening processes
Dynamic simulation was carried out to investigate process operability, controllability, and flexibility, and to improve s the process design with respect to those solutions dictated by the experience and/or steady-state analysis. The case study was a natural gas sweetening process and specifically an amine process to remove H 2S. The process consisted of an absorber where the natural gas enters from the bottom and encounters a water/mono-di-ethanol-amine (MDEA) solution to remove impurities mainly H 2S contained in the inlet stream. The dynamic simulation highlighted some possible improvements for the traditional control scheme of MDEA plants. This is an abstract of a paper presented at the 19th International Congress of Chemical and Process Engineering and 7th European Congress of Chemical Engineering (Prague, Czech Republic 8/28/2010-9/1/2010)
Conformation and Interactions of All-d-bombolitin-iii, Retro-all-d-bombolitin-iii and Retro-bombolitin-iii Analog In Aqueous-solution and In the Presence of Detergent Micelles
Bombolitins are five structurally related heptadecapeptides which lyse erythrocytes and liposomes and enhance the activity of phospholipase A(2). The conformational properties of the all-D-, retro-all-D-, and retro-L-analogues of bombolitin III were investigated by circular dichroism (CD) and two-dimensional H-1-nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) techniques. In water, all three sequences are in a random conformation and aggregate to various extents depending on pH and concentration. The two enantiomeric retro-sequences exhibit a higher propensity to form beta-aggregates, while the D-analogue of the native sequence fends to form aggregates of alpha-helices. In the presence of an excess of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), the peptides fold into an amphiphilic alpha-helical conformation (left-handed in the case of the all-D sequences). NMR studies on the L-retro-analogue indicate that the helical segment is localized in the central part of the sequence. Combined CD and surface tension measurements indicate that the critical micellar concentration of SDS is raised in the presence of peptide and that helical folding occurs before micelle formation. These results are interpreted in terms of formation of peptide-detergent complexes. It is estimated that the helical structure forms when 40-50 molecules of detergent are bound to each peptide molecule. These data and our previous results of in vitro biological tests confirm that the ability to form amphiphilic helices is the major determinant of biological activity of bombolitins

Adaptive Data Reconciliation Coupling C++ and PRO/II and On-line Application by the Field
The paper discusses the possibility of coupling object-oriented programming languages such as Visual C++ and the commercial simulators such as PRO/II, UniSim, and AspenHysys to get a generalized framework for robust and reliable data reconciliation of sulfur recovery units by taking to a series of benefits from their interaction: (i) simulation software provides a high-level and field-proven degree of detail in simulating processes; (ii) they usually allow inferring measures even when the instrumentation presents serious lacks by the field; and (iii) the programming languages allow using specific numerical libraries to solve large-scale, nonlinear, constrained optimization problems by making them feasible even for the on-line industrial application. The proposed approach was validated on a large-scale Sulfur Recovery Unit (technology by Technip-KTI SpA) operating in an oil refinery placed in Italy

La prima edizione in italiano del Book of Common Prayer (1685) tra propaganda protestante e memoria sarpiana
[The First Italian Edition of the Book of Common Prayer (1685) between protestant propaganda and Sarpian memories]. In 1685 the first printed edition in Italian of the Anglican Book of Common Prayer, was published in London (Il Libro delle Preghiere Publiche Secondo l’Uso della Chiesa Anglicana). This article investigates the apologetic and controversial reasons that led to its publication. Because an Italian Protestant Church in England no longer existed when this translation was published, it was apparently not meant for use in worship. Furthermore, the same Italian Protestant Church in London, founded in 1550 and dissolved probably around 1663, had never adopted Anglican worship and both from the institutional and liturgical points of view had always been a Calvinist Church. The translation’s editor was Edward Brown, an Anglican cleric, who published a translation into English of Paolo Sarpi’s Lettere Italiane Scritte al Signor dell’Isola Groslot in 1693. Brown’s interest in Sarpi is particularly remarkable because, before the edition of 1685, the Book of Common Prayer was translated by the chaplain to the English ambassador, Sir Henry Wotton, for Sarpi himself between 1607 and 1610
