An Interview with Lauren Groff
Author Lauren Groff has written multiple books, most recently Florida (2018), a finalist for the 2018 National Book Award in Fiction. Groff, who is currently a Suzanne Young Murray Fellow at the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study at Harvard, has received numerous awards and recognitions, including her novel Fates and Furies (2015) being lauded as then-president Obama’s book of the year in 2015. During her visit to Butler, Groff sat down with Manuscripts staff member Matt Del Busto to discuss the importance of failure, the morality of the sentence, and the dynamic between the writer and the author
Svjetska književnost: prevođenje kratkih priča Lauren Groff
Because of the wide range of definitions, theories and approaches, the complex notion of world literature remains a major topic of debate in literary studies. This thesis attempts to offer an overview of different scholarly takes on what the concept of world literature refers to, identify the criteria and discuss the impact of various extraliterary factors in determining the quality of literary works, as well as highlight the significance of the translator's contribution to the growth of the global literary scene. The theoretical framework is followed by the Croatian translation of two short stories written by a contemporary American author Lauren Groff, serving as an example.

Going straight to the source: students with reading difficulties talk about reading, self-efficacy and reading instruction
The consequences of lack of reading and poor reading skills are disastrous for all students, regardless of background; however, because of the poverty and lack of economic opportunities in urban areas, readers of low-ability from marginalized ethnic and economic backgrounds may face more barriers than their economically advantaged peers. As these readers progress through school, their reading problems become more challenging for teachers to alleviate, and they fall further behind their peers, often losing motivation to engage with text (Alvermann, 2005). Research suggests that the instructional environment plays a critical role in students' views on reading, reading abilities and reading instruction. Currently, only a small body of research has addressed the problems of urban middle grade readers with reading difficulties from the students' perspectives. The purpose of this study is to contribute to the small volume of existing literature that highlights the voices of these readers by using their perspectives to examine three fundamental aspects of reading: the act of reading, reading self-efficacy and reading instruction.
This study used qualitative and quantitative data in the forms of interviews, surveys and observations to investigate the three areas. The major finding of this study resonates with previous research on the importance of contexts (Smith & Wilhelm, 2002). Contextual features played a crucial role in the students' feelings of competence in reading. Most students in the study viewed themselves as good readers; however, students of lower reading ability had lower self-efficacy in reading than students of higher reading ability. In addition, almost all of the students viewed the reading process and good reading similarly, regardless of grade or ability level. Students viewed teacher and tool assistance as critical to effective reading instruction. They also emphasized the importance of a variety of reading materials that are interesting and powerful. These findings have the potential to provide teachers with better insight about the needs of readers experiencing reading difficulties and inform instructional strategies and materials.Ph.D.Includes bibliographical references (p. 151-157)
Status and distribution of the lynx (Lynx lynx) in the Italian Alps 2005–2009
To assess the status of lynx we analysed lynx signs of presence within the range of the Italian Alps from 2005 to 2009. A total of 268 signs have been
collected, compared to 411 signs during the previous pentad. The distribution of the
confirmed signs of lynx presence is confined to three concise areas: the North-eastern
Alps of Friuli VG, the Trentino province and the Ossola valley in the Piedmont region. Occupancy modelling revealed a decrease of the lynx range by one third: The
estimated number of occupied 100 km2
cells decreased from 34 (pentad: 2000–2004)
to 21 (pentad: 2005–2009). Less than 10% of the Italian Alps are colonized. We estimated the number of lynx present in all the Italian Alps at less than 15 individuals.
Therefore, the persistence of lynx in the Italian Alps highly depends on immigration
from neighbouring countries

A collection of the year’s best short stories, selected by celebrated bestselling author Lauren Groff, author of Matrix and The Vaster Wilds, and series editor Heidi Pitlor.
“There have never been as many exquisitely built stories in existence than there are now,” proclaims guest editor Lauren Groff in her introduction. This abundance led to a volume of robust stories with the nerve to push against narrative expectations. The Best American Short Stories 2024 boasts a collection of twenty stories that “buzz with their own strange logic.” A man becomes a tourist in his own hometown. An unemployed jeweler sails in an antique slave ship. A therapist decides to call an ex-patient years after their last session. Daring and resonant, the stories in this volume invite in Groff “a feeling that both the author and I were simultaneously discovering something together.” Source: Publisherhttps://scholarworks.smith.edu/eng_books/1023/thumbnail.jp
Noninvasive Ventilation in Cardiogenic Pulmonary Edema: A Multicenter Randomized Trial
Studies employing noninvasive pressure support ventilation in cardiogenic pulmonary edema have been performed in the intensive care unit when overt respiratory failure is already present and in small groups of patients. In this multicenter study, performed in emergency departments, 130 patients with acute respiratory failure were randomized to receive medical therapy plus O2 (65 patients) or noninvasive pressure support ventilation (65 patients). The primary end point was the need for intubation; secondary end points were in-hospital mortality and changes in some physiological variables. Noninvasive pressure support ventilation improved PaO2/FIO2, respiratory rate, and dyspnea significantly faster. Intubation rate, hospital mortality, and duration of hospital stay were similar in the two groups. In the subgroup of hypercapnic patients noninvasive pressure support ventilation improved PaCO2 significantly faster and reduced the intubation rate compared with medical therapy (2 of 33 versus 9 of 31; p=0.015). Adverse events, including myocardial infarction, were evenly distributed in the two groups. We conclude that during acute respiratory failure due to cardiogenic pulmonary edema the early use of noninvasive pressure support ventilation accelerates the improvement in PaO2/FIO2, PaCO2, dyspnea, and respiratory rate, but does not affect the overall clinical outcome. Noninvasive pressure support ventilation does, however, reduce the intubation rate in the subgroup of hypercapnic patients
