BBOH 004 Watt Key 6-5-2019
In this recording, author Albert Watkins Key, aka Watt Key, is interviewed by Ruby Staten about his experiences spending time in the wetlands of the Mobile-Tensaw River Delta for his book, Among the Swamp People. Mr. Key begins the interview describing his experiences growing up in Point Clear, Alabama, and the storytelling in his family led to his passion for writing. Mr. Key discusses the differences between the bay and the delta in relation to fishing and hunting. He considers some of the local ecological knowledge that people in the delta hold, and the tensions that can exist between federal regulations and on-the-ground experience, and discusses aspects of the culture that exists among people who frequent the delta
BBOH 006 Gregory Waselkov 6-14-2019
In this recording, Gregory Waselkov is interviewed by Ruby Staten about the history of Blakeley Bluff and the surrounding Mobile-Tensaw River Delta area. Dr. Waselkov describes how he became interested in pursuing a career in archaeology, and the path that led him to working at the University of South Alabama. He discusses some of the archaeological excavations that he has led in the Blakeley area, including a number of Civil War-era sites. Dr. Waselkov also discusses the prevalence of illegal archaeological looting and pothunting in the area. Much of the interview moves between discussing the history of the area since the 17th century—particularly including Civil War history, and Native American history such as the Red Stick War—and current efforts relating to the Historic Blakeley park and other aspects of historic preservation
