The moral layer of contemporary economics: A virtue-ethics perspective
This paper questions whether the contemporary science of economics and its recommendations are built on sound moral foundations as assessed from a virtue-based definition of ethical behaviour. We argue that the model of man underlying economic analyses can correspond to the model of a virtuous person, and that economics, by advocating reasoned choice and careful resource utilization, makes a positive contribution to the moral development of individuals.Economics; Efficiency; Rationality; Tastes; Virtue Ethics
The Information Limit to Honest Managerial Behavior
In the last years of the Internet bubble, many managers provided fraudulent financial statements with the aim at inflating the market value of their firms. Is this shortage of honesty an accident or a buit-in feature of shareholder capitalism? This paper argues that in an economy hosting publicly traded companies where investors have only imperfect information about a firm’s type and where a honest financial report may be wrong, at least some bad firms managers will provide false statements. Furthermore, in equilibrium some good firm managers may also resort to corrupt auditors which will issue a favorable report without carrying out any investigation. The frequency of dishonest managers is analysed in keeping with the precision of the report and the total number of firms.Corporate fraud; Accounting information; Manager behavior; Honesty; Perfect Bayesian Equilibrium
Development of miniature all-solid-state potentiometric sensing system
A procedure for the development of a pen-like, multi-electrode potentiometric sensing platform is described. The platform comprises a seven-in-one electrode incorporating all-solid-state ion-selective and reference electrodes based on the conductive polymer (poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT)) as an intermediate layer between the contacts and ion-selective membranes. The ion-selective electrodes are based on traditional, ionophore-based membranes, while the reference electrode is based on a polymer membrane doped with the lipophilic salt tetrabutyl ammonium tetrabutyl borate (TBA-TBB). The electrodes, controlled with a multichannel detector system, were used for simultaneous determination of the concentration of Pb2+ and pH in environmental water samples. The results obtained using pH-selective electrodes were compared with data obtained using a conventional pH meter and the average percent difference was 0.3%. Furthermore, the sensing system was successfully used for lead-speciation analysis in environmental water samples
Realising fusion systems
We show that every fusion system (saturated or not) on a p-group S is equal to the fusion system associated to a discrete group G containing S as a subgroup and such that every finite subgroup of G is conjugate to a subgroup of S
Direct torque control for dual three-phase induction motor drives
A direct torque control (DTC) strategy for dual three-phase induction motor drives is discussed in this paper. The induction machine has two sets of stator three-phase windings spatially shifted by 30 electrical degrees. The DTC strategy is based on a predictive algorithm and is implemented in a synchronous reference frame aligned with the machine stator flux vector. The advantages of the discussed control strategy are constant inverter switching frequency, good transient and steady-state performance, and low distortion of machine currents with respect to direct self-control (DSC) and other DTC schemes with variable switching frequency. Experimental results are presented for a 10-kW DTC dual three-phase induction motor drive prototype

Blockchain-Based Wine Supply Chain for the Industry Advancement
The wine sector is one of the most ‘amazing’ and significant agri-food sectors worldwide since ancient times, considering revenue or employment as well as health aspects. This article aims to describe the impact of the implementation of blockchain technology (BCT) in the wine supply chain. After the literature review, the study is based on Agent Based Models (ABMs) and carried out by the GAMA program. Then, the model and simulation of BCT wine supply chain is designed. Finally, the paper compares traditional and BCT-based supply chains, and the advantages of the last one are evident. Blockchain is a useful tool to ensure a traceability system and to protect the production from any type of fraud and contamination
Public Property Privatization in France
The modernization and privatization of the State’s real-estate assets are pivotal for the improvement of the French public sector’s global performance: they take part in the national policy for economic efficiency and public management. Multiple questions arise in the process. How to implement and survey a system of accounting for the State’s real property assets? What kind of objectives and indicators are needed and should be targeted? Is privatization needed and how should it be implemented ? What would be the basis of a reform in public asset management? One of the main challenges lies in the identification of state properties. Another issue is a clear knowledge of the expenses and incomes that can be related to public buildings and properties. Also, the highest level of protection provided in France by strong public rules and strict regulation of public domain brings unavoidable difficulties. Indeed, these weaknesses make possible the management of public assets under private managerial rules. Several key points of a global strategy are emerging through field observation. For instance a comprehensive set of methods is expected in collecting information; a sound management framework calls for well prepared personnel; the decentralization constraint should be considered according to the relocation of public services; a rent policy is to be retained as an alternative of an investment policy. Last, practical considerations end the research document and call for the implementation of Strategic Plans for Public Properties.Public properties; Privatization; Public accounting; Decentralization
State Estimation for Nanosatellite-Class Reaction Wheels
In this MSc. thesis, state estimation for a nanosatellite-class reaction wheel has been investigated. Two LPV observers, using different sensor information, have been synthesized. The performance of the designed observers has been evaluated using a detailed simulation of the reaction wheel (including disturbances that occur during the reaction wheel operation).Mechanical Engineering | Systems and Contro
