HET ONDERZOEK VAN DE AHRENSBURG-VINDPLAATS TE OUDEHASKE (FR.) IN 1990

    No full text
This paper summarizes the results of the 1990 excavation at the Ahrensburgian site of Oudehaske (Stapert, 1989). The artefacts were encountered exclusively in the ploughed topsoil. At a depth of 80-90 cm the Usselo Horizon was present, proving that the site cannot be older than the end of the Late Dryas Stadial; a dating in the first part of the Preboreal seems likely. The finds from the excavation pit (8X2 m) were collected by sifting, and consist of 30 tools or tool fragments, 50 blades or blade fragments, 82 flakes or flake fragments, 2 possible burin spalls, and 735 chips smaller than 1.5 cm. The 30 tools comprise one burin on a broken large blade, a small flake scraper, a scraper fragment and 27 points, mostly fragmentary. Convincing tanged points were not collected. Most of the points and point fragments can be classified as probable B points or Zonhoven points. On stratigraphical and archaeological grounds the site can be placed in the last phase of the Ahrensburgian Tradition (\u27Epi-Ahrensburgian\u27), just like the site of Gramsbergen (Stapert, 1979)

DE CHEDDAR- EN CRESWELL-SPITSEN VAN ZEIJEN (DR.): \u27PROJECTIELEN\u27 OF MESSEN?

The first author performed use-wear analys is on the points from the Creswellian sile at Zeijen in the province of Drenthe (see Stapert & Johansen, 2001). Both the Cheddar and the Creswell points proved to have been used as \u27projectiles \u27- not as knives. In several cases, unambiguous traces of hafiing could be observed, including \u27bright spots \u27 produced by frietion (Rats, 2001/2002). lt is of interest that most of the Cheddar points, and several Creswell points too, were probably hafted as barbs, not as tips

EEN BIFACE PARTIEL IN DE COLLECTIE VERMANING VAN HET DRENTS MUSEUM

    No full text
The Drents Museum of Assen houses a collection o f twelve authentic Middle Palaeolithic artefacts supplied by the late Tjerk Vermaning, comprising three handaxes, a disque, a Levallois point, a Levallois core, another core, and five flakes. Two handaxes have already been described (Stapert, 1985). This paper deals with the third handaxe. The piece can be classified as a biface partiel, with the outline of a cordiforme allongé. The tool was manufactured out of a natural flake-like nodule from the bouldersand. The artefact displays a range of postdepositional surface modifications, such as windgloss, white and brown patinas, and retouches, scratches and pressure cones as a result of cryoturbation. These weathering phenomena most probably date from the Upper Pleniglacial of the Weichselian

Motion and mobility in the realist novels of Philip K Dick

    No full text
This essay explores the ways that ideas of motion and mobility support readings of Philip K Dick's early novels that take full account of the changing geographical context. They are set during a period of rapid suburban expansion, the building of the interstate and the spread of automobility through car ownership, and their characters frequently exist in a state between continuity through conformity and the potential for change. The open ended forms of the novels reflect a world around Dick that was still under construction, and where alternative realities can be glimpsed between incomplete materialities

\u27RINGS & SECTORS\u27: EEN COMPUTERPROGRAMMA VOOR RUIMTELIJKE ANALYSE

    No full text
The computer program \u27Rings & Sectors\u27 is a tool for intrasite spatial analysis of artefact scatters around central hearths, based on the ring and sector method (Stapert, 1992). It is designed for IBM-compatible Personal Computers with a graphic screen. The program is fully menu-assisted, and consists of several levels. The first level serves the entering and modification of data. In the second level a map of the site is presented. Moreover, parameters for the analysis can be modified, such as the position of the \u27centre\u27, the number of sectors, and the width of the rings. A selection of artefact groups can be made. The actual analysis is performed at the third level. The results are presented in bar charts. These can be changed to pie charts or \u27sector charts\u27 (combination of pie charts and bar charts). The program is able to print maps, charts and tables.&nbsp
