Keynote Address: Erica Chenoweth
Erica Chenoweth, Ph.D. is the Frank Stanton Professor of the First Amendment at Harvard Kennedy School and a Susan S. and Kenneth L. Wallach Professor at the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study. Chenoweth directs the Nonviolent Action Lab at Harvard’s Carr Center for Human Rights Policy, where they study political violence and its alternatives. Foreign Policy magazine ranked Chenoweth among the Top 100 Global Thinkers in 2013 for their efforts to promote the empirical study of nonviolent resistance.
Chenoweth’s latest book Civil Resistance: What Everyone Needs to Know (2021, Oxford) explores in an accessible and conversational style what civil resistance is, how it works, why it sometimes fails, how violence and repression affect it, and the long-term impacts of such resistance.
Chenoweth’s next book, with Zoe Marks, explores the impact of women’s participation on the outcomes of mass movements. In addition to exploring why women’s participation makes movements more likely to succeed, Marks and Chenoweth explore how frontline women’s participation leads to progress in women’s empowerment in some cases and reversals in others, as well as how gender-inclusive movements impact the quality of egalitarian democracy more generally
PSYCHOMETRIC PROPERTIES OF THE ITALIAN VERSION OF THE EMIQ-HP (EXERCISE IN MENTAL ILLNESS QUESTIONNAIRE-HEALTH PROFESSIONALS VERSION) TO INVESTIGATE THE VIEWS OF HEALTH PROFESSIONALS REGARDING EXERCISE FOR TREATMENT OF MENTAL ILLNESS
Objective: People with mental illness experience a significantly increased mortality rate, partly attributable to high rates of premature metabolic disease. Exercise is increasingly recognized as an evidence-based component of treatment for improving both physical and mental illness. Ensuring health care staff have
the necessary competence to support and promote exercise is critical to successful implementation. The Exercise in Mental Illness Questionnaire-Health Professionals Version (EMIQ-HP) was developed to determine the knowledge, attitudes, barriers, and behaviors of health practitioners regarding the role of exercise in the treatment for mental illness. This study aimed to translate and validate the questionnaire into Italian language (EMIQ-HP-IT) and to determine its test-retest reliability.
Method: The questionnaire was translated from English to Italian then back translated using an established protocol. To determine the test-retest reliability of the EMIQ-HP-IT, mental health professionals from an Italian psychiatric hospital completed the questionnaire on two separate occasions, seven days apart. Intra-class correlation coefficients (ICC) were calculated for each item. Twenty-five mental health professionals (4 psychiatrists, 9 psychologists, 10 nurses and 2 exercise specialists) completed the EMIQ-HP-IT.
Results: Except for two items, ICCs ranged from 0.48 to 0.92. The test-retest reliability of the EMIQ-HP-IT demonstrated comparable results to the English version.
Conclusions: The EMIQ-HP-IT is a reliable measure of practitioners’ knowledge, attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors regarding exercise interventions for people with mental illnes

Black Female Respectability and Abolitionism: Lucy Stanton at Oberlin College and Beyond
Abolitionist Lucy Stanton, the first female graduate of Oberlin College and the first black woman in the United States to finish four years of college, strongly believed in the power of moral reform. In her self-presentation, personal choices, and abolitionist rhetoric, Stanton embodied a politics of respectability. Using the works of Evelyn Brooks Higginbotham and Erica L. Ball, I articulate my interpretation of the politics of respectability for middle-class free black women before the Civil War, with Stanton’s life as a case study. I assert that Stanton primarily chose to embody ideals of respectability due to her belief in the transformative abolitionist power of living out her values. Rather than being a performance, Stanton’s respectability was an intrinsic part of her identity

Rand, Erica - 2022 Follow Up
Erica Rand is a professor of Arts and Visual Culture at Bates College, an adult figure skater, author and activist. This is a follow-up interview to her previous interview for Querying the Past in 2017. Erica Rand was heavily involved with ACT- UP Portland and more specifically the branch of ACT UP called: Pissed Off Dyke Cell and Women’s Health Action Crew. But more recently she has been involved with a new form of activism through sports and writing. Erica is a teacher and author who was a founding member of the SA Social Studies Teachers Association (contributing to its text books) and the SA History Teachers Association. She took her Masters in English Literature at Flinders University and taught in Girls and Boys Technical Colleges for 40 years. Erica's published works include a history of vocational education in South Australia from 1897 - 2001, We Came to Marion 1955 - 1995 (1995), A Broader Vision: Voices of Vocational Education in SA (2001), Challenging the Divide: Approaches to Science and Poetry (2010), and Making a Stand (2015)
