Hot planetary nebulae nuclei and related objects
The hottest central stars found in planetary nebulae excite the O VI atomic transition in their atmospheres. Presumably the central stars of all planetary nebulae become O VI stars during some phase of their evolution. Observational studies show that all post-asymptotic giant branch (P-AGB) stars (excluding white dwarfs) that undergo nonradial pulsations are O VI stars. A full understanding of O VI stars is therefore crucial before we can develop a complete picture of P-AGB evolution. In this thesis we study O VI central stars of planetary nebulae, with particular attention to obtaining their evolutionary paths, masses and an understanding of the physical processes of the associated nebulae. Our approach is to use analyses of nebular and stellar spectral features as diagnostics of the physical conditions that prevail in and around these objects. We obtain stellar magnitudes, Zanstra temperatures, extinction constants, abundances, and other diagnostics. By placing the central stars on the HR diagram, we estimate their masses and evolutionary timescales. Correlations between spectral characteristics and observable stellar properties suggest that narrow-line and broad-line O VI central stars belong to different mass-groups. We also calculate the nebular electron densities and distances for a larger sample of planetary nebulae and demonstrate the existence of correlations between the different density diagnostics, in substantial agreement with leading hydrodynamical models. We perform theoretical studies of instability against nonradial oscillations of hydrogen-depleted P-AGB stars and white dwarfs. Our tests of instability, which are non-adiabatic and are based on stellar surface models combined with evolutionary models, are in agreement with nonradial oscillations found from photometric measurements in O VI central stars and other hydrogen-depleted evolved stars.Made available in DSpace on 2011-05-07T14:06:25Z (GMT). Teatranti di razza. Intervista a Pamela Villoresi
One of the most important actresses of the Italian
theatre, Pamela Villoresi, talks about her relationship with Eleonora Duse. She is in conversation with
Maria Letizia Compatangelo, author of the monologue La musica dell’anima. Ritratto di Eleonora
Duse, successfully interpreted for some years. Villoresi’s talk is from her youthful instinctive attraction to the “Duse character”, to her mature understanding of the value of her innovations in the field
of acting. Comparisons, legacies, teachings: two different periods, but the same all-encompassing commitment to the theatre
The author studies several aspects of the roman branch of this association of athletes: the location of its headquarters in the city, its history and its administration. The synodos was somehow connected with the sympas xystos, headed by xystarchai and epi balaneion Sebastou or Sebaston. The author studies the functions of these magistrates in connection with the organization of the Imperial Bath in Rome. The author argues that the xystarchai, appointed by the Emperor, may have been in charge of the athletes, while the epi balaneion were responsible for the place where athletics were performed
Pharmacological and nutritional therapy of children and adults with chronic intestinal pseudo-obstruction
Introduction: Chronic intestinal pseudoobstruction (CIPO) is a rare, heterogenous, and severe form of gastrointestinal dysmotility. Areas covered: Pertinent literature on pediatric and adult CIPO management has been assessed via PubMed, Scopus, and EMBASE from inception to June 2022. Prokinetics, aimed at restoring intestinal propulsion (e.g. orthopramides and substituted benzamides, acetyl cholinesterase inhibitors, serotonergic agents, and others), have been poorly tested and the available data showed only partial efficacy. Moreover, some prokinetic agents (e.g. orthopramides and substituted benzamides) can cause major side effects. CIPO-related small intestinal bacterial overgrowth requires treatment preferably via poorly absorbable antibiotics to avoid bacterial resistance. Apart from opioids, which worsen gut motility, analgesics should be considered to manage visceral pain, which might dominate the clinical manifestations. Nutritional support, via modified oral feeding, enteral, or parenteral nutrition, is key to halting CIPO-related malnutrition. Expert opinion: There have been significant roadblocks preventing the development of CIPO treatment. Nonetheless, the considerable advancement in neurogastroenterology and pharmacological agents cast hopes to test the actual efficacy of new prokinetics via well-designed clinical trials. Adequate dietary strategies and supplementation remain of crucial importance. Taken together, novel pharmacological and nutritional options are expected to provide adequate treatments forthese patients
Gli agoni alla greca nelle regioni occidentali dell'Impero. La Gallia Narbonensis
The paper collects and studies the (mainly epigraphical, but also literary and archaeological) evidence concerning Greek agonistic festivals celebrated in three cities of Gallia Narbonensis: Massalia, Nemausus and Vienne. The latter two were not Greek foundations, but they were throughly hellenized under the influence of Massalia. In three catalogues, the author presents texts, with bibliography and commentary of 28 inscriptions (the inscriptions still extant have been seen and photographed). Most of them date to the end of the 2nd century A.D., which leads to the hypothesis that the Capitolia, instituted by Domitian in 86 A.D., were a major stimulus to the diffusion of Greek contests in Gaul. The author points to the relations between these festivals and the imperial cult and to the important role of local élites in the organisation of both
Centri storici tra specificità e processi di mutamento
Historical centres between specificity and changing process
The Italian debate on historical centers, characterized for a long time by a karst trend,
has often been lacking both in terms of recognizing their specificity and in terms of a process analysis of their characteristics. The starting point is to recognize them as integral parts
of the city but, at the same time, as parts characterized by completely peculiar features.
Sometimes historical centers are considered a resource for the city in terms of social and
economic development, other times an issue that requires intervention strategies. The author
proposes a reflection that moves from the peculiarities of each reality, to connect them to a
typological proposal focused on the change processes affecting historic centers. This perspective of analysis allows and paves the way for planning interventions of urban regeneration policie
Towards a Framework for Developing Mobile Agents for Managing Distributed Information Resources
Distributed information management tools allow users to author, disseminate, discover and manage information within large-scale networked environments, such as the Internet. Agent technology provides the flexibility and scalability necessary to develop such distributed information management applications. We present a layered organisation that is shared by the specific applications that we build. Within this organisation we describe an architecture where mobile agents can move across distributed environments, integrate with local resources and other mobile agents, and communicate their results back to the user
