No full text30 páginasWe estimate the effects of peer benchmarking by institutional investors on asset prices. To identify trades purely due to peer benchmarking as separate from those based on fundamentals or private information, we exploit a natural experiment involving a change in a government-imposed under-performance penalty applicable to Colombian pension funds. This change in regulation is orthogonal to stock fundamentals and only affects incentives to track peer portfolios, allowing us to identify the component of demand that is caused by peer benchmarking. We find that these peer effects generate excess stock return volatility, with stocks exhibiting short-term abnormal returns followed by returns reversal in the subsequent quarter. Additionally, peer benchmarking produces an excess in co-movement across stock returns beyond the correlation implied by fundamentals.Estimamos los efectos de la evaluación comparativa entre pares por parte de inversores institucionales en los precios de los activos. Para identificar las operaciones que se deben puramente a la evaluación comparativa entre pares como separadas de las basadas en fundamentos o información privada, explotamos un experimento natural que involucra un cambio en una sanción por bajo rendimiento impuesta por el gobierno aplicable a los fondos de pensiones colombianos. Este cambio en la regulación es ortogonal a los fundamentos de las acciones y solo afecta los incentivos para realizar un seguimiento de las carteras de pares, lo que nos permite identificar el componente de demanda causado por la evaluación comparativa entre pares. Encontramos que estos efectos de los pares generan un exceso de volatilidad en el rendimiento de las acciones, con acciones que exhiben rendimientos anormales a corto plazo seguidos de una reversión de los rendimientos en el trimestre siguiente. Además, la evaluación comparativa entre pares produce un exceso en el movimiento conjunto entre los rendimientos de las acciones más allá de la correlación implícita en los fundamentos

Full text linkThis paper details the microfoundations of the model presented in Staff Report no. 234, “Great Expectations and the End of the Depression.” It defines the Markov perfect equilibrium formally in the nonlinear model, discusses in some detail the approximation method used and the order of accuracy of this approximation, and gives proofs of two propositions not proved in Staff Report no. 234. In addition, this paper states a proposition that shows the equivalence between the linear quadratic approximation in Staff Report no. 234 and a first order approximation to the exact nonlinear conditions of the government in the Markov perfect equilibrium defined here
