A Quantitative Survey of Sphaeriid Abundances within Spring Creek Habitats, Northfield, MN

    No full text
This study analyzes Sphaeriid (“fingernail” and “pea” clam) abundance in Spring Creek in Northfield, Minnesota, U.S.A., comparing quantities of Sphaerium sp., Musculium sp., and Pisidium sp. between habitats. Sphaerium was largely absent from the Lower Spring Creek, Musculium from the Upper Spring Creek B, and both Musculium and Sphaerium absent from the Upper Spring Creek A reach. Pisidium was present in all three study sites. Within the Lower Spring Creek Musculium and Pisidium were found in comparatively greater quantities within fine substrate opposed to coarse substrate, while in the Upper Spring Creek B reach Pisidium demonstrated a preference for coarser substrate over finer substrate. Depth, stream velocity, and turbidity were also analyzed for this study; these variables did not correlate well with fingernail clam distributions. However, in the Upper Spring Creek B Pisidium was found in significantly greater quantities within habitats with flow compared to stagnant water. Additionally, within this reach Pisidium preferred water shallower than 18 cm over deeper areas. Broadly, this study demonstrates that Spring Creek has diverse Sphaeriid assemblages that vary between different study areas, and that some Sphaeriids in Spring Creek prefer certain habitat types over others

Ruby and Cat's friendship was forged on an English dockside sixty years ago when, as terrified children, they were shipped off to Australia. It was a friendship that was supposed to last a lifetime but when news of Cat's death reaches Ruby in London, it comes after years of estrangement. Declan too has drifted away from Cat but is forced back to her lavendar farm, Benson's Reach, by the terms of her will. He turns to his troubled friend Alice, who is desperate for a refuge. Can the magic of Benson's Reach triumph over the hurt of the past? Or is Cat's duty-laden legacy simply too much for Ruby and Declan to keep alive?" - Back cover
