The Family Reading Project (FRP), initiated in 2016, trains Japanese parents to read English language storybooks to their elementary schoolers (Ferguson, Sponseller, & Yamada, 2017). One challenge the FRP has faced is selecting storybooks that are not only interesting in terms of content but lexically within the reach of the participating parents. At present, no comprehensive corpus of children’s texts or principled manner for measuring the difficulty of a text for children exists. The primary aim of this research was to begin developing and refining a principled approach to analyzing candidate texts for inclusion in the FRP. A principled approach is needed if the FRP wishes to make lexically-informed book selections for future iterations of the program. Fifty-five titles from the popular children’s storybook series The Berenstain Bears were digitized in order to create a miniature corpus. The lexical profiles for the series overall as well as individual titles that were generated and investigated are discussed, and implications for evaluating potential texts for use in the FRP are briefly discussed

The C-terminal domains of leucyl-tRNA synthetases
The mitochondrial Leucyl-tRNA synthetase (mtLeuRS) of certain Caenorhabditis species contains an idiosyncratic C-terminal addition. Bioinformatic analyses identified this domain in the mtLeuRS and also four putative nuclear localization sequences (NLSs) encoded within the domain (Ezak, Hong, Chaparro-Garcia, & Ferkey, 2010). This C-terminal extension of Caenrhabditis mitochondrial LeuRS, or CECL domain, is highly positively charged and shows no obvious homologs in protein databases. Bioinformatic and computational modeling suggest that CECL is an added domain rather than being a part of the canonical C-terminal domain. An annotated splice-variant of the mitochondrial LeuRS hints at a mechanism for subcellular localization. Deletion of CECL from the chromosome prevents homozygous worms from surviving fertilization in most cases. From these observations, we hypothesize that the mitochondrial LeuRS of C. elegans performs an alternate nuclear function, perhaps carried out specifically in the neurons of the animal.Submission published under a 24 month embargo labeled 'Closed Access', the embargo will last until 2018-12-01The student, Aaron Frimel, accepted the attached license on 2016-12-07 at 13:02.The student, Aaron Frimel, submitted this Thesis for approval on 2016-12-07 at 13:04.This Thesis was approved for publication on 2016-12-08 at 16:13.DSpace SAF Submission Ingestion Package generated from Vireo submission #10471 on 2017-02-28 at 14:43:22Made available in DSpace on 2017-03-01T17:02:06Z (GMT). Arte Fragmentada: A \ufaltima Obra Prima de Aaron Slobodj
A
ABSTRACT: A
altima Obra Prima de Aaron Slobodj (2004) by Jos\ue9 Carlos Fernandes can be described as a fake in fragments, since the book consists of fragments, both texts and illustrations, that the reader can freely relate and Slobodj is an invented author who is taken as a real one. Although Fernandes is mainly known for his comics, the genre of A
altima Obra Prima de Aaron Slobodj is not easily definable. Moreover, the critical and bio-bibliographical texts included in the volume reinforce the difficulty in identifying its genre. Additionally, Fernandes’ book invites a comparative perspective to discuss the relationship between two different media, text and illustration
Attempting to Develop Transferrable Oral Fluency in Storybook Reading: A Yomikikase Case Study
A popular component of family literacy programs consists of encouraging parents to read stories to/with their children. Reading together has been linked with considerable improvements in literacy in L1 contexts, however reading together in an L2 remains underexplored. In Japan this area is practically unexplored altogether. Given most Japanese parents of elementary-age children today have been through six years of compulsory English in JHS and HS, as well as the fact that the storybooks used in such programs are typically comprised of low-level vocabulary and accompanied by pictures that support the story, it is reasonable to wonder if a storybook reading intervention for Japanese parents presents a feasible option for augmenting young Japanese English learners’ English language development. Specifically, this study investigated two things. First, are oral fluency gains in storybook reading possible for a Japanese reader of English storybooks over just 10 days? Second, do hypothetical fluency gains in reading one storybook aloud transfer to a storybook of similar difficulty? This case study followed one participant over the course of ten days as she practiced reading a single storybook aloud. She spent three days reading aloud, three more days listening to a native speaker model of the text and then reading aloud, and finally three days shadowing that native speaker model. The results showed excellent gains on the text practiced for over 10 days, however no transferrable fluency gains were observed for the second storybook. The case study participant offers her thoughts on the texts and activities. Limitations of the study and implications for future research in this area are briefly discussed
Exploring EAP Self-Efficacy Ratings of an Academic Faculty at a Major Japanese Research University
Upon attaining the Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Science, and Technology’s (MEXT) designation of the so-called “Super Global” university status, universities must necessarily shift their focus from merely setting aggressive goals to the actual implementation of policies and practices which will move them toward meeting those lofty goals. In many cases a significant portion of the benchmarks these universities are aiming to reach involve increasing the enrollment of foreign students, the number of foreign faculty, the courses taught in English, and the frequency with which their faculty and students present at international conferences and publish in international journals. The following research illustrates how one department at a major research university in Japan has taken the initial steps in this direction by developing and distributing a brief survey exploring faculty members’ feelings of self-efficacy in English for academic purposes (EAP). By employing a Rasch-based analysis to validate the items on that survey, the department was then able to begin taking the initial steps towards meeting their Super Global goals by designing a series of workshops targeting the academic English skills identified by the faculty as most critically needed. The focus of the research presented here, however, is limited to a discussion of the challenges involved in the process of designing and validating an instrument capable of quickly measuring what faculty members believe they can and cannot do academically in English. Possible improvements for the next iteration of this instrument, which may be deployed across the entire university, are also included
