Temperature- and moisture-dependent soil water repellency induced by the basidiomycete Agaricus bisporus
Soil water repellency (SWR) has been reported to regularly occur in many soils under various climatic conditions. Despite the commonness of this soil property the mechanisms leading to the occurrence of SWR are largely unknown. The aim of this experiment was to test the hypothesis that the basidiomycete Agaricus bisporus promotes SWR, and that this fungal-induced SWR is dependent on soil moisture and temperature. We report that A. bisporus strongly induces SWR. We further show that the water content during the cultivation of A. bisporus on soil as well as drying temperature of the soil after the incubation experiment significantly affected SWR. Water drop penetration time (WDPT) of the soil ranged from 0.5s in the samples cultivated at high soil water content (20%, w/w) and subsequently freeze dried, to more than 162 min in the soils that were kept at the low water content (13.8%, w/w) and were subsequently dried at 80 degrees C. These findings show that fungal activity potentially can promote dramatic SWR. The strong increase in SWR clue to heating of the soil to 80 degrees C supports the view that SWR can be caused by a rearrangement of organic substances. For this reason, we discuss surface-active proteins produced by basidiomycetes as potential drivers of the SWR observed in our experiment. (C) 2011 Elsevier GmbH. All rights reserved

Nowe spojrzenie na planowanie architektury mieszkaniowej w afryce subsaharyjskiej
The author shares his reflections on state of art in housing and urban planning, deficiencies, expectations and possibilities in the Sahel region of Africa. He notices, that the housing problem in Africa is one of the challenges, which should be solved in order to recover life dignity of African people and secure their rights to traditional family life in acceptable conditions. The paper describes the studies on the typical dispersed urban structures and the need to foster this type of settlement structure and proposals of introduction of new on light steel frame housing system in the area of Sahel, combining the traditional way of building houses with modern technology. The particularly analysed case, is the housing problem in the Republic of Chad. The author presents the basic discussion on this topic and his architectural proposals. Unfortunately, the gap between the needs and the financial feasibility of housing construction in this area, makes this project already at the starting point extremely difficult to be realized without external subventions.
Counterfactuals and two kinds of ought
I discuss Caspar Hare’s solution to a new variant of Parfit’s Non-Identity Problem. Hare’s solution rests on distinguishing two kinds of ought: The Ought of Omniscient Desire: what you oughtOD to do is what an omniscient, rational creature with appropriate interests would want you to do. The Ought of Most Reason: what you oughtMR to do is what there is most reason to do. I argue that the distinction does not dissolve the problem. Moreover, I show that Hare’s proposal to spell out his distinction in terms of an embedded counterfactual (if you had not done what you did, then, if you had done what you did, what would the consequence have been?) is flawed
