A RANS approach to the meshless computation of pressure fields from Image Velocimetry

    No full text
We propose a 3D meshless method to compute mean pressure fields in turbulent flows from image velocimetry. The method is an extension of the constrained Radial Basis Function (RBF) formulation by Sperotto et al. (2022) to a Reynolds Averaged Navier Stokes (RANS) framework. This is designed to handle both scattered data as in Particle Tracking Velocimetry (PTV) and data in uniform grids as in correlation-based Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV). The RANS extension includes the Reynolds stresses into the constrained least square problem. We test the approach on a numerical database featuring a Backward Facing Step (BFS) with a Reynolds number of 6400 (defined with respect to the inlet velocity and step height), obtained via Direct Numerical Simulation (DNS)

Filosofia, sensibilità e arte in Diderot: un rapporto paradossale

    No full text

The International Security Presence in Kosovo and the Protection of Human Rights

On March 11th, 2000, two children who were playing in the neighborhoods of Mitrovica, Kosovo, got hurt by an “unexploded ordnance”. One of them died in the explosion, the other was severely injured. An inquire clarified that the ordnance was a “bomblet”, a part of a cluster bomb dropped during the 1999 NATO air campaign against the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. © Federico Sperotto. A Human Rights-Oriented Approach to Military Operations

    No full text
Counterinsurgency is the dominant aspect of US operations in Afghanistan, and since ISAF—the NATO-led security and assistance force—has assumed growing security responsibility throughout the country, it is also a mission for the Europeans.1 The frame in which military operations are conducted is irregular warfare, a form of conflict which differs from conventional operations in two main aspects. First, it is warfare among and within the people. Second, it is warfare in which insurgents avoid a direct military confrontation, using instead unconventional methods and terrorist tactics. © Federico Sperotto. All rights reserved. Law in Times of War: the Case of Chechnya

    No full text
In October 1999 “the second Chechen war” broke out. In December the Russian federal army started an operation to take control of Grozny. During the confrontation between the Federal forces and the Chechen separatists, serious human rights violations occurred. Several cases concerning violations of fundamental rights, in and around the city, have been brought before the European Court of Human Rights against Russia. The lawsuits concerned in particular physical integrity issues. This study provides some insights on the jurisprudence of the European Court on Human Rights in order to ascertain the adequacy of the mechanism of protection provided by the European Convention of 1950 in situations of armed conflict. © Federico Sperotto. Diderot: ironia e umorismo nel Salon 1765

    No full text
Enlightenment philosophers often used irony in a philosophical manner. But irony is an ambiguous and complex figure of speech that can take on philosophical or anti-philosophical value, depending on the uses made of it. Diderot extensively resorts to irony throughout his works, even in unsuspected places in the Encyclopédie, but can we detect a philosophical use of this figure of speech in works of aesthetics as well? The Salon 1765 is considered here as an emblematic moment of Diderot’s reflection on the visual arts, in which irony is linked to the effort of objectivity of the art critic and to the one of the writer who intends to convey the emotion of the painting to the reader, even when it is negative. Irony therefore seems to perform two main functions: 1) to point out an inappropriate choice of subject (when this demonstrates the sterility of the artist’s ideas or licentious subjects that contradict the moral purpose of the pictorial or sculptural work); 2) to make those who read and cannot see the painting empirically understand its defect of composition, design, colour, rhythm. The irony, which is incorporated in the description, thus gives it a critical and emotional value at the same time, aimed at exercising and educating the readers’ taste

Initial Deliverable on Network and Service Monitoring (Deliverable 5.1, Flamingo NoE)

    No full text
Project DeliverableMonitoring is at the basis of any informed network and service management decision. However, nowadays networks are becoming progressively more complex, have higher traffic rates and are more frequently exposed to attacks. For these reasons, targeted monitoring solutions should be investigated to fulfil the requirements of the management of the Future Internet. This mindset is core to the research conducted in WP5.This deliverable presents the WP5 contributions in the context of the following Tasks: Architectures and technologies for monitoring (T5.1), Collection and processing of monitoring data (T5.2), and Application domains for monitoring (T5.3).
