The Citadel of Turin "in Absentia". Drawings and Reconstruction Hypotheses after Demolition
The Citadel of Turin is one of the first examples of Modern Age pentagonal fortification and model for other contemporary fortresses, mainly in Italy, France and Flanders.
The Citadel assumed a decisive role in the favorable resolution of the siege of Turin in 1706, but many years later, a series of municipal deliberations underlined its inactivity, defensive inefficiency, and character of obstacle to urban expansion; then its off-ground structures was gradually dismantled from mid-nineteenth century.
After the demolition, the interest of the scholars was particularly enlivened by works on urban history and history of the art of war.
Among the numerous features considered by scholars, this paper highlights those related to the shape and dimensions of the Citadel which, not univocally interpreted, still today present some level of uncertainty.
The author applies graphical analyses and reconstructive digital drawings to the most interesting archival drawings and scholars' reconstruction, and proposes different observations about: the irregularity of the external pentagon; the shape of the bastions, the presence of the second flank; the geometric relationship between the flank and the curtain

Arithmetic, geometry, and measurements in the Baroque building site
Between the 16th and 17th centuries, intellectuals, mathematicians, and military engineers wrote treatises dedicated to the measurement of architecture and fortifications, while the practice of surveying was considered a nearly professional endeavor.
Modo di misurare le fabriche (1674) by Guarino Guarini responds to the need for expeditious methods for measuring architectural elements in buildings under construction during the second expansion of Baroque Turin. Dedicated to the measurement of surfaces and volumes, unlike other texts, the treatise devotes very little space to the description of surveying techniques. The work stands out for its absolute novelty in the treatise landscape, as it refers to the construction phase of the architectural process.
In this essay, new considerations are developed regarding the relationships between
arithmetic, geometry, and measurements, highlighting their connections to the construction of buildings.
The analysis carried out underlines the need to read Guarini's writings on architecture
as a complementary system of highly integrated knowledge. In particular, the link between geometry and architecture, intrinsic to Guarini's treatises, is expressed in Modo di misurare le fabriche through the concept of measurement
Geometria delle volte a bacino. Modellazione tridimensionale per l’interpretazione formale nei trattati di Guarini. Geometry of the domes. 3D modelling aimed to interpret the domes’ shape in Guarini’s treatises.
L’articolo descrive e interpreta in chiave geometrica le invenzioni
formali nell’ambito delle volte a bacino attraverso i trattati
di Guarini, avvalendosi della modellazione digitale tridimensionale
e individua l’utilizzo di tali forme in alcune architetture
guariniane.
The article describes and interprets from a geometric point of view
the shapes’ inventions of domes, through Guarini’s treatises, using
3D modelling. It also recognizes these shapes in some guarinian
buildings
Prefazione
Digital Animation for Representing Architectural Design
Since the late Nineties digital movies are emerging as one of the main methods for submission of architectural designs at international competitions, public presentations and shares on websites of contemporary masters.
The chapter highlights how the ability to access the fourth dimension, through the construction of a sequence of images, constitutes a specific prerogative of digital representation, which goes beyond the static constraint imposed by conventional methods of representation.
The author investigates on the methods, techniques and languages of the fourth-dimensional communication of architecture, unexplored area of research thus far, already the subject of her previous studies, relating them with the masters’ personal poetics.
The chapter provides also analysis and critiques of the case studies collected by the author from the beginning of the phenomenon, and traces an ideal interpretation path, due both to the changing technologies and the emerging specific languages
Roots of ‘Parametric Thinking’ in Palladio’s Villas. Surveying, interpreting and visual programming the plates from I quattro libri di architettura
In this work we want to link the considerations relating to the rectangular ratios and harmonic proportions of Palladio's plans, through the automation of the Shape Grammar rules rewritten here in Visual Programming Language. This operation allows to program generalized automatisms for the construction of some Palladian villas (e.g. Villa Thiene, Villa Sarego, Villa Poiana), cataloguing them in families mainly linked to the size of the tartan grid used (e.g. 5 x 3). This experimentation could show how algorithmic thought has distant roots, finding in the contemporary era a new digital life through software and procedures now available to the designer
Disegni di progetto come Cultural Heritage. Intrecci fra disegno e linguaggio architettonico nell’opera di Aldo Morbelli
Increasingly, the archives of 20th century
architecture are attracting the interest of scholars as architecture are attracting the interest of scholars as
a source for in-depth understanding of architectural
works and the trajectories of artistic movements and
individual designers. The autograph drawing, in the
different phases of the elaboration of the project,
uses methods and techniques that reveal the link
with the architectural language. The rediscovery,
analysis, highlighting and interpretation, with
traditional and innovative tools and techniques
typical of the discipline of representation, can
contribute to the recognition of architectural
archives as Cultural Heritage. The authors of this
proposal are following this path about the drawings
of Aldo Morbelli’s archive, consulting them
extensively, identifying characteristics and
peculiarities and, finally, choosing a case study,
through which to test the heuristic potential of
representation for analysis and interpretation of the
design. In this paper we propose graphic, manual
and digital analyses related to the design of “Due
case a Capri” (1942)
Modellazione tridimensionale e presentazione del patrimonio culturale: esperienze di realtà aumentata (AR) e realtà virtuale (VR) / 3D Modeling and Presentation of Cultural Heritage: Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR) Experiences
I problemi connessi alla fruizione e alla
condivisione dal patrimonio culturale
sempre più coinvolgono l’integrazione
di tecnologie digitali per l’analisi, l’interpretazione,
la comunicazione, e la
condivisione. Nell’ambito del Cultural
Heritage, il cosiddetto ‘diluvio di dati’,
nelle parole di Anderson ormai piuttosto
datate (2008), riguarda l’acquisizione
digitale, la costruzione di modelli
interpretativi, le elaborazioni spaziali,
la modellazione informativa così come
la digitalizzazione degli archivi fisici.
Le sfide rispetto alla valorizzazione di
tali dati riguardano la lettura, la disseminazione
e la permanenza nel tempo.
L’idea che guida le ricerche multidisciplinari
di seguito presentate è che lo
spazio fisico possa essere un punto di
accesso condiviso per la conoscenza
del bene al fine di muoversi attraverso
livelli multipli di analisi e di informazione
e di poterli incrociare
