The full title is “On Tamar and on the Mystery of the Church.” The biblical narrative on which the poem is based (Gen 38) gives Jacob the opportunity to discuss various women in the early part of biblical history and in Jesus’ lineage, as well as the fact that a woman who is called a prostitute is in that lineage. Jacob explains how Scripture’s language is used in this regard

No full textThis fascinating volume contains excerpts from four otherwise unedited (and untranslated) homilies from Jacob of Sarug on the theatre. These homilies, extant only in a single manuscript (BM Add. 17158), which is unfortunately poorly preserved, are unique for the light they cast on the Greek theatre in the Byzantine period. In this article, originally published in Le Muséon 48 (1935), Moss gives a substantive introduction to the selections presented from these homilies, and then presents the texts in Syriac and in English translation. Scholars and readers interested in Syriac literature, and in Jacob of Sarug in particular, as well as students of the history of the theatre, will find this work of great interest.Translated into English from the Syriac text
White ring sign for uneventful lenticule separation in small-incision lenticule extraction
No full textWe describe the white ring sign, which differentiates the posterior and anterior lenticular planes in small-incision lenticule extraction. The sign identifies the plane of dissection by the anteroposterior relationship between the dissecting instrument and the circular white light reflected from the lenticular side cut. Differentiating the planes enables the surgeon to dissect the anterior plane before the posterior plane, which facilitates smooth lenticule extraction and prevents complications such as cap tears, partial lenticule dissection, and a torn lenticule. Jacob Viner’s Reminiscences from the New Deal (February 11, 1953)
No full textThis paper presents and reproduces an unpublished oral history interview given by Jacob Viner in 1953. The interview released by Viner for the Columbia Oral History Project gives us a valuable opportunity to throw light on his advisory activity during the New Deal Era. In our introduction we attempt to make a critical appraisal of Viner's reminiscences and to state the contribution they can provide to our general knowledge of the period. In addition, we also attempt to find out some biographical and interpretative elements useful to understand Viner’s own vision and his contribution to important economic policy processes during the New Deal.
Stab Incision Glaucoma Surgery: A Modified Guarded Filtration Procedure for Primary Open Angle Glaucoma
No full textPurpose. To describe a modified guarded filtration surgery, stab incision glaucoma surgery (SIGS), for primary open angle glaucoma (POAG). Methods. This prospective, interventional case series included patients with POAG (IOP ≥21 mmHg with glaucomatous visual field defects). After sliding superior conjunctiva down over limbus, 2.8 mm bevel-up keratome was used to create conjunctival entry and superficial corneoscleral tunnel in a single step starting 1.5 mm behind limbus. Lamellar corneoscleral tunnel was carefully dissected 0.5–1 mm into cornea and anterior chamber (AC) was entered. Kelly Descemet’s punch (1 mm) was slid along the tunnel into AC to punch internal lip of the tunnel, thereby compromising it. Patency of ostium was assessed by injecting fluid in AC and visualizing leakage from tunnel. Conjunctival incision alone was sutured. Results. Mean preoperative IOP was 27.41±5.54 mmHg and mean postoperative IOP was 16.47±4.81 mmHg (n=17). Mean reduction in IOP was 38.81±16.55%. There was significant reduction of IOP (p<0.000). 64.7% had IOP at final follow-up of <18 mmHg without medication and 82.35% had IOP <18 mmHg with ≤2 medications. No sight threatening complications were encountered. Conclusion. Satisfactory IOP control was noted after SIGS in interim follow-up (14.18±1.88 months)

No full textIn the two articles reprinted here, Dom Hugh Connolly offers an English translation of two homilies from Jacob of Serugh dealing with the Eucharist. Connolly used the Syriac text of Bedjan’s edition of Jacob’s homilies (also available from Gorgias Press), homilies 22 and 95 in that edition. A short selection from homily 53 is also translated because of its related subject matter. Connolly gives an introduction to each homily and includes some explanatory notes to the texts.
