Growth Mindset Training and the Effect of Math-Gender Stereotype Threat on Girl Students
To investigate whether growth mindset training can weaken the effect of math-gender stereotype threat on girl students, this study undertook experimental intervention in a group of grade-11 girl students and found that: (i) Mindsets can moderate the effect of math-gender stereotype threat. Girls with a growth mindset are less likely to be affected by math-gender stereotype threat compared with those with a fixed mindset. (ii) Growth mindset training for girls with a fixed mindset can effectively reduce the effect of math-gender stereotype threat on their math performance
Family support or social support: evidence from family planning policy in China
In this study we use the Family Planning Policy as our exogenous shock to identify whether having fewer children will influence parents’ insurance participation. By using 2005 and 2015 Mini-Census data, we found that having less boys made rural parents less involved in social security programs (including pension and medical insurance), while having less girls will not affect insurance participation significantly. To take a step further, we found that the Q-Q theory is verified in boys rather than girls. For children of rural mothers, boy’s income and education level are significantly improved when having fewer siblings. This is reasonable considering rural families have stricter budgetary constraints and value boys more than girls. To sum up, in rural areas, family planning policy decreased fertility as well as increased the boy ratio, which decrease parents’ participation in social security systems. When boys have fewer siblings, their education and income increase significantly, and can thus ensure their parents a good life in their older age, which reduces the need for pension and medical insurance. Zhang, Shujuan.M.Phil.
