Long-lasting increase in voluntary ethanol consumption and transcriptional regulation in the rat brain after intermittent exposure to alcohol

    No full text
Prolonged exposure of the brain to ethanol is a prerequisite for developing ethanol dependence, but the underlying neural adaptations are unknown. Here we demonstrate that rats subjected to repeated cycles of intoxication and withdrawal develop a marked and long-lasting increase in voluntary ethanol intake. Exposure-induced but not spontaneous alcohol intake is antagonized by acamprosate, a compound clinically effective in human alcoholism. Expression analysis of cingulate cortex and amygdala reveals a set of long-term up-regulated transcripts in this model. These include members of pathways previously implicated in alcohol dependence (glutamatergic, endocannabinoid, and monoaminergic neurotransmission), as well as pathways not previously thought to be involved in this disorder (e.g., members of the mitogen-activated protein kinase pathway). Thus, alternating periods of ethanol intoxication and withdrawal are sufficient to induce an altered functional brain state, which is likely to be encoded by long-term changes in gene expression. These observations may have important implications for how alcoholism is managed clinically. Novel clinically effective treatments may be possible to develop by targeting the products of genes found to be regulated in our model. - Rimondini, R., Arlinde, C., Sommer, W., Heilig, M. Crime novels or psychological prose? Judith W. Taschler's Sommer wie Winter and Die Deutschlehrerin.

    No full text
The topic of this bachelor thesis is a literary analysis of books Sommer wie Winter and Die Deutschlehrerin written by Judith W. Taschler, the contemporary Austrian author. One of the essential questions, to which the thesis searches for an answer, is the genre classification of the above-mentioned books. It means whether they have basic features and characterization of a criminal novel or if they are considered a psychological prose. Besides the genre classification of the novels and their structural and content analysis, the work brings a comparison in the broader literary-historical context: It finds a certain affinity of the works, which were examined, with the literary movement named Anti-Heimatliteratur. There are some other parallels in development of Austrian literature, e.g. the use of psychoanalysis in the novel Sommer wie Winter or in the novel Malina by Ingeborg Bachmann

Nowe spojrzenie na planowanie architektury mieszkaniowej w afryce subsaharyjskiej

The author shares his reflections on state of art in housing and urban planning, deficiencies, expectations and possibilities in the Sahel region of Africa. He notices, that the housing problem in Africa is one of the challenges, which should be solved in order to recover life dignity of African people and secure their rights to traditional family life in acceptable conditions. The paper describes the studies on the typical dispersed urban structures and the need to foster this type of settlement structure and proposals of introduction of new on light steel frame housing system in the area of Sahel, combining the traditional way of building houses with modern technology. The particularly analysed case, is the housing problem in the Republic of Chad. The author presents the basic discussion on this topic and his architectural proposals. Unfortunately, the gap between the needs and the financial feasibility of housing construction in this area, makes this project already at the starting point extremely difficult to be realized without external subventions.

    Chirping and poetics (Białoszewski–Sommer)

The paper is a comparative analysis and interpretation of two poetic texts: the poem Przegięcie by Piotr Sommer, from the volume Dni i noce (2009), and Miron Białoszewski’s poem from 1961, starting with the words kochać taka sztuka. In both of them, the key role is played by the metaphor of chirping-ticking, evoking the ancient metaliterary topos of the poet-cicada, but also problematizing the fact of the continuous measurement of time in modernity. Referring to the notion of chronopoetics used by Wolfgang Ernst and to the post-secular analysis of the sestina proposed by Giorgio Agamben, the paper raises a question about the relationship between the mechanical measurement of time and the temporal structure of modern free verse. The comparison of the chronopoetics in both analyzed texts focuses on the function of rhythmic devices, repetitions and, especially in Białoszewski, effects of defamiliarization. An attempt to describe their specific temporalities allows us to reinterpret the traces of existence present in the content: insomnia in Sommer and John of the Cross’ dark night of the soul in Białoszewski
