No full textThis article reviews the evolution of Cyrenaican fortifications from Late Antiquity to the reign of Justinian, the last emperor to make a number of interventions in urban and rural areas as well. The cities under study are those for which some hypotheses on their fortification layouts have been suggested, drawing on publications as well as the latest data from archaeological investigations. The data for rural areas have been gathered through field surveys and specific campaigns from the Chieti University Archaeological Mission, allowing to draw a picture which, despite requiring further analyses, is characterized by a wide variety of structures mostly related to major land resources and roadways crossing the region
