This paper aims to provide an overview of Caius Iulius Higinus’s mythological works. Likewise, different issues dealing with his identity and authorship in certain works are coped with. In particular, whether he was the author of “Fabulae” or “Genealogiae” and of “De astronomia”, or, instead, whether there were two authors involved.peerReviewe
From Benign Inflammatory Dermatosis to Cutaneous Lymphoma. DNA Copy Number Imbalances in Mycosis Fungoides versus Large Plaque Parapsoriasis
Background and Objectives: Mycosis fungoides (MF) and large plaque parapsoriasis (LPP) evolution provide intriguing data and are the cause of numerous debates. The diagnosis of MF and LPP is associated with confusion and imprecise definition. Copy number alterations (CNAs) may play an essential role in the genesis of cancer out of genes expression dysregulation. Objectives: Due to the heterogeneity of MF and LPP and the scarcity of the cases, there are an exceedingly small number of studies that have identified molecular changes in these pathologies. We aim to identify and compare DNA copy number alterations and gene expression changes between MF and LPP to highlight the similarities and the differences between these pathologies. Materials and Methods: The patients were prospectively selected from University Clinic of Dermatology and Venereology Timișoara, Romania. From fresh frozen skin biopsies, we extracted DNA using single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) data. The use of SNP array for copy number profiling is a promising approach for genome-wide analysis. Results: After reviewing each group, we observed that the histograms generated for chromosome 1–22 were remarkably similar and had a lot of CNAs in common, but also significant differences were seen. Conclusions: This study took a step forward in finding out the differences and similarities between MF and LPP, for a more specific and implicitly correct approach of the case. The similarity between these two pathologies in terms of CNAs is striking, emphasizing once again the difficulty of approaching and differentiating them
Psoriasis, Anti-Tumor Necrosis Factor Therapy, and Tuberculosis: Report of Three Challenging Cases and Literature Review
Psoriasis, Anti-Tumor Necrosis Factor Therapy, and Tuberculosis: Report of Three Challenging Cases and Literature Review
Préambule : Caius Munatius Faustus, l’Augustalis et paganus pompéien aux deux tombeaux
Preamble: Caius Munatius Faustus, the Pompeian Augustalis and Paganus Who has Two Tombs
This article studies the epigraphic monuments pertaining to the freedman C. Munatius Faustus, found in two Pompeian necropolises and in the Eastern Egyptian desert. Having analysed textual information, especially the vocabulary and the epigraphic formulas, the author studies the material peculiarities of these inscriptions, in particular the iconography and the topographic context. These elements allow to reconstruct the social practices of some social categories and the codification processes of these practices and as a system of shared social knowledge. Rossi Lucia. Morphopatological and histochemical highlights in normal and varicose vein wall
The nutrition of the venous wall appears to be an important factor in the vascularfibrillar trophicity and in the dynamic of the extracellular matrix formation for the normal veins and, for the chronic venous ulcers of legs, on period of healing. Sequential biopsies were taken at various levels of venous wall of external and internal saphena in 16 cases presenting a chronic condition of legs venous system (35-58 years old patients, both sexes). 8 vein fragments with normal macroscopic appearance were also taken, in necropsy.
These samples were analyzed using regular morphological methods and some histochemical reactions to reveal the glycogen, glycoproteins, and glycosaminoglycans substrates. There were been used the Gomori silver impregnation and orcein to expose some specific substrates like reticulin or elastin. Other staining methods, like Gomori trichrome, were used to differentiate the specific structures of the vein wall, were used to differentiate the specific structures of the vein wall.
A rich vascularization of normal and dilated vein wall could be remarked.Angiogenesis in vein wall and vasa vasorum changes as well as alcianophilic of vascular intima seem to be reactive and protective factors, depending on the applied therapeutic modalities. The veins are weak structures whose integrity depends on the thickness of the media and the support of neighboring structures
The Liber Uricrisiarum in Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge, MS 336/725
This thesis is concerned with the study of a version of Henry Daniel’s Liber Uricrisiarum found in Gonville & Caius 336/725. The Liber Uricrisiarum is a Middle English elaboration on Isaac Judaeus’ De Urinis, as presented in Latin by Constantinus Africanus. The aim of its author and translator, Henry Daniel, was to provide a treatise on uroscopy in English, as a help to contemporary lay doctors and public-minded practitioners of medicine. Access to books and medical literature was largely a privilege of the university educated physicians of the time, who possessed more authoritarian positions, and, in addition, mastered Latin and Greek, in which this literature was mostly written. The Liber Uricrisiarum is only one of many vernacular texts of the period which exemplify the social distinction between the lay doctors and the university educated physicians.
Uroscopy was a fundamental medical discipline in the Middle Ages, and central in the diagnosing of patients’ conditions. In order to practise the art, the doctor would have to have a good understanding of the colours and contents of urine, and of how to examine it properly. The doctor also needed to have knowledge of the patient’s
physical state, complexioun, emotional state, the humours, and also of astrology, anatomy and digestion and so on. Many manuscripts contain information from the Liber Uricrisiarum in varying length and form. The relationship between the various versions is often diffuse, and information about their origin is a science unto itself. This thesis will principally deal with a so-called short version found in MS Gonville & Caius 336/725. It will also comment on a long version found in Wellcome MS 225, and examine the differences between the two. The Wellcome version which I will use is transcribed and analyzed in a doctoral dissertation by Joanne Jasin.
The aim of this study is twofold. The first and most basic task is to transcribe and print the short version of the Liber Uricrisiarum from Gonville & Caius MS 336/725. This will make it easier to carry out the second part of the study, and it will make the text accessible to anyone interested. The text has so far only been available in its
entirety in the MS and on microfilm, in a hand that is not easily legible to the modern reader. As a part of this transcription, a glossary of terms central to the text is also made available.
The second part of the study is to compare the short version mentioned above, with the long version found in Wellcome MS 225. The focus is to point out the differences between the two versions, and find out what makes one version longer, and what elements are, for instance, lacking in the other
