Author 1 :Alkswani, Mamdouh Alkhatib Associate Professor, Author 2: Al-Towaijari, Hamad A. Assistant Professor in Economics Department, College of Administrative Sciences, King Saud UniversityThis study investigates the determinants of the money demand function in Saudi Arabia. Saudi economy was instable during the period 1977-1997 because of its dependence of the production of oil. This depending affects sharply the rates of growth and the rates of inflation. The integration and cointegration proprieties of the data are analyzed and the model of error correction is used to estimate the demand for money. This paper concludes that even the period of high instability in the economy, there exists a stationarity long run demand for narrow money (M1) in Saudi Arabia

Punching Shear Strength of FRP-Reinforced Concrete Slabs without Shear Reinforcements: A Reliability Assessment

No full text
The recent failure of buildings because of punching shear has alerted researchers to assess the reliability of the punching shear design models. However, most of the current research studies focus on model uncertainty compared to experimentally measured strength, while very limited studies consider the variability of the basic variables included in the model and the experimental measurements. This paper discusses the reliability of FRP-reinforced concrete slabs’ existing punching shear models. First, more than 180 specimens were gathered. Second, available design codes and simplified models were selected and used in the calculation. Third, several reliability methods were conducted; therefore, three methods were implemented, including the mean-value first-order second moment (MVFOSM) method, the first-order second moment (FOSM) method, and the second-order reliability method (SORM). A comparison between the three methods showed that the reliability index calculated using the FOSM is quite similar to that using SORM. However, FOSM is simpler than SORM. Finally, the reliability and sensitivity of the existing strength models were assessed. At the same design point, the reliability index varied significantly. For example, the most reliable was the JSCE, with a reliability index value of 4.78, while the Elgendy-a was the least reliable, with a reliability index of 1.03. The model accuracy is the most significant parameter compared to other parameters, where the sensitivity factor varied between 67% and 80%. On the other hand, the column dimension and flexure reinforcement are the least significant parameters compared to other parameters where the sensitivity factor was 0.4% and 0.3%, respectively

The Schur-Szegö Composition of Real Polynomials of Degree 2

No full text
A real polynomial P in one real variable is hyperbolic if its roots are all real. n j j The composition of Schur-Szeg¨ of the polynomials P = o j =0 Cn aj x and n n j j j j Q = j =0 Cn bj x is the polynomial P Q = j =0 Cn aj bj x . In the present paper we show how for n = 2 and when P and Q are real or hyperbolic the roots of P Q depend on the roots or the coefficients of P and Q. We consider also the case when n 2 is arbitrary and P and Q are of the form (x - 1)n-1 (x + b). This case is interesting in the context of the possibility to present every polynomial having one of its roots at (-1) as a composition of n - 1 polynomials of the form (x + 1)n-1 (x + b).Sin resume

CR1 Knops blood group alleles are not associated with severe malaria in the Gambia

No full text
The Knops blood group antigen erythrocyte polymorphisms have been associated with reduced falciparum malaria-based in vitro rosette formation (putative malaria virulence factor). Having previously identified single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the human complement receptor 1 (CR1/CD35) gene underlying the Knops antithetical antigens Sl1/Sl2 and McC(a)/McC(b), we have now performed genotype comparisons to test associations between these two molecular variants and severe malaria in West African children living in the Gambia. While SNPs associated with Sl:2 and McC(b+) were equally distributed among malaria-infected children with severe malaria and control children not infected with malaria parasites, high allele frequencies for Sl 2 (0.800, 1,365/1,706) and McC(b) (0.385, 658/1706) were observed. Further, when compared to the Sl 1/McC(a) allele observed in all populations, the African Sl 2/McC(b) allele appears to have evolved as a result of positive selection (modified Nei-Gojobori test Ka-Ks/s.e.=1.77, P-valu

Closed-form solutions to investigate the nonlinear response of foundations supporting operating machines under blast loads

No full text
Machine foundations are subjected to significant dynamic impacts. These impacts could spread to the surrounding regions, affecting workers, sensitive equipment in the same institution, or nearby areas. This study analyzes the response of machine-supporting foundations to harmonic and explosive loads under operational conditions and provides closed-form solutions for predicting responses in terms of displacement, velocity, and acceleration time-histories to two common types of blast loads: a more accurate typical profile and simplified triangular profile. The soil-machine foundation system is regarded as a single-degree-of-freedom (SDOF) system that exhibits elastic–perfectly flexible resistance behavior. For the analysis of the SDOF system, two cases are considered: one assumes that the supporting soil keeps elastic during the explosion, and the peak displacement is less than the elastic one, while the other assumes that the blast occurs in an elastic state, and the peak displacement occurs in a plastic state. By using the closed-form analytical solutions, a detailed parametric analysis is carried out to evaluate the impacts of significant soil-foundation system characteristics such as mass, stiffness, and damping ratio on the response-time history of machine foundations. The findings are compared to those reported in the literature, and relevant conclusions are derived. Obtained results demonstrated that, despite its simplicity and usage of only positive phase to simulate blast loads, the simplified model’s response behavior differs significantly from the typical one. Furthermore, the derived solutions are utilized to design the foundations supporting vibrating machines for both harmonic and blast loads in a variety of conceivable scenarios depending on the blast magnitude

Challenges and Failures in the Contemporary Arab Discourse

No full text
This research deals with the challenges and defeats faced by the contemporary Arab discourse in all its forms and aspects, especially as it is experiencing a strong crisis between international and regional inconsistencies, produced by the forces of globalization and its uneasy pressures. Our basic thesis in this article can be summarized as follows. First, we argue that, can we say that the contemporary Arab discourse is dependent on the other, or is it a slave to the makers of globalization? Second, Does the Arab discourse in the present era issued by the same reference that was issued several decades ago, or is it reconsidering this reference to adapt to the circumstances and developments surrounding it? Or is it adapted between its Arab privacy, which starts from the constants and references that differ from our Arab reality and does not apply to our problems? To prove this, the article tries to shed the light on the credibility of the Arab political discourse, which constitutes a set of theoretical theses and hypothetical perceptions concerned with the author of the discourse only. It tries to reveal that the Arab political discourse does not touch the principle of practical application, as the recipients of political discourse feel disappointed and discredited because the author of the discourse derives his power from his authority and not from the authority of the masses, and loyalty is an absolute loyalty for him
