    Gunilla Soliman Oral History

    No full text
Gunilla Soliman was an administrative staff member at the American University in Cairo’s Social Research Center over the course of three decades, joining the Center in 1992. Of German-Swedish parentage, she recounts her youth in Sweden, her family having fled there from Germany during the Second World War. She sketches her early professional life and work in the mid-1970s as a tour guide in Egypt, where she relocated and met her husband, with whom she established a manufacturing company. Soliman tells of joining the Social Research Center in 1992, and her early responsibilities in areas like budgeting and event organizing. The SRC Director in that 1990s period, Saad Nagi, is recalled fondly, along with his efforts to make unpopular but necessary personnel changes and to seek new sources of funding for the Center. His successor as Director, Hoda Rashad, is also described, as well as Soliman’s new role in writing reports for the Center, Soliman’s retirement from the SRC in the early 2000s, and her return shortly thereafter to serve as Rashad’s assistant. Soliman traces the shift in the SRC’s focus from anthropological social research to training and education, mentioning major projects like the Arab Demography and Empowering Women projects. She notes various funding entities supporting the Social Research Center, including American and European development agencies, as well as conferences and collaborations with social scientists at AUC and universities abroad. Soliman also describes the SRC’s facilities on the downtown Greek Campus and then in an office building on Kasr El Aini Street, and discusses the challenges of the upcoming move to AUC’s new campus

3 STEM Projects by Fares Soliman

My name is Fares Soliman. I am a fourth grade student from John Hill School Boonton NJ. I created a 3 STEM project. The first project that I made was a doll. I used pink yarn for the dress and brown yarn for the hair. I also used a round wooden ball for the face. The second project that I created was a diorama of a farm. I put some grass, trees, a barn, hay sticks, some animals, a bridge, a fence, some plastic food and corn for the crop. My third project was a diorama of a park. It has some grass area, a swing and a slide made of cardboard and aluminum foil. I also used some turf or the road and added a little pond. I enjoy creating dioramas and building things from scratch. I also love drawing many things. I learn a lot from STEM projects and enjoy them very much

    No full text

    No full text
