On the Concept of Intellectual Property: Challenging the prevailing premise of architectural authorship
Among many other aspects, digitalisation and an increasingly globalised collaborative society are challenging the outdated premise of the solitary architect as an authoritarian genius and thus the author of his work. Several theorists and architectural scholars have consistently discussed the issue of authorship (in architecture), as this question addresses a fundamental question to the essence of and engagement in the discipline. As both the artistic and the scientific inherent notions of the profession attribute different functions to the user, architecture appears as a hybrid, mediating intellectual property of the thought, ownership of the product and collective property through engagement. The interpretative dependency of each component’s implication on the notion of authorship is sequentially explored in its linear allocation. Essentially, the whole discourse pivots on the chicken-and-egg argument, for the existence of an author implies per se the emergence of a previously non-existent idea. Establishing a collaborative essence of thinking and a separation of the profession's scope from the entitlement to the built product can result in both the service group’s economic stability and the preservation of cultural production.AR2AT031: Architecture Theory ThesisArchitecture, Urbanism and Building Science
Bayesian probabilistic damage detection of a reinforced-concrete bridge column
A Bayesian probabilistic approach for damage detection has been proposed for the continuous monitoring of civil structures (Sohn H, Law KH. Bayesian probabilistic approach for structure damage detection. Earthquake Engineering and Structural Dynamics 1997; 26: 1259-1281). This paper describes the application of the Bayesian approach to predict the location of plastic hinge deformation using the experimental data obtained from the vibration tests of a reinforced-concrete bridge column. The column was statically pushed incrementally with lateral displacements until a plastic hinge is fully formed at the bottom portion of the column. Vibration tests were performed at different damage stages. The proposed damage detection method was able to locate the damaged region using a simplified analytical model and the modal parameters estimated from the vibration tests, although (1) only the first bending and first torsional modes were estimated from the experimental test data, (2) the locations where the accelerations were measured did not coincide with the degrees of freedom of the analytical model, and (3) there existed discrepancies between the undamaged test structure and the analytical model. The Bayesian framework was able to systematically update the damage probabilities when new test data became available. Better diagnosis was obtained by employing multiple data sets than just by using each test data set separately. AVSU: Workshop on audio-visual scene understanding for immersive multimedia
This workshop aims to provide a forum to exchange ideas in scene understanding techniques researched in audio and visual communities, and to ultimately unlock the creative potential of joint audio-visual signal processing to deliver a step change in various multimedia applications. Papers and talks presented in this workshop will contribute to the emerging technology for audio and visual information that can improve traditional approaches for multimedia content production and reproduction. The goals of this workshop are to (1) present and discuss the latest trends in audio and computer vision fields for the common research goals, (2) understand state-of-the-art techniques and bottlenecks in the other's discipline for the common topics, (3) investigate research opportunities of joint audio-visual scene understandings in multimedia content production. This workshop will be a good opportunity to bring together leading experts in audio processing and computer vision, and will bridge the gap between two research fields in multimedia content production and reproduction. © 2018 Copyright is held by the owner/author(s)
Health care clinic Riveras del Bravo, Ciudad Juarez
The problem statement concerns the emerging phenomenon of abandoned housing. It is estimated that more than 5 million houses are standing empty throughout the country. Ciudad Juarez is an ideal case study with one of the highest levels of abandonment estimated between 25 and 30%. The reasons for this are multiple and point towards a complex mesh of forces that transgress the scope of the built environment. They encompass entangled dimensions of political economy and socio-economic developments, which only touch the built structure of actual housing at the very last stage. Major issues on the basis of abandoned housing are the drug trafficking and the resulting violence. Inhabitants experience insecurity, extortion and human rights violations due to the ongoing drug war. The government has proven to be inadequate to solve the problems, and even worsened the situation. The ongoing problematic social and economic situation is only increasing the existing poverty. Site research in Juarez furthermore revealed a city that is struggling with lack of urban planning, municipal infrastructure and an economy that is heavily dependent on global investments in the maquilla production industry, which is at present in a state of decline. In addition to poor urban planning, there is a fundamentally flawed system in the manner in which social housing is conceived, designed, produced inhabited and devaluated in Mexico. These factors create a cycle of decay and dysfunction, from which abandoned housing becomes one of many spatial consequences. The studio developed architectural counter-proposals that seek to break these cycles of urban blight and decay. The site which is used as an example expressing the issue of abandoned housing is ‘Riveras del Bravo’. The issues mentioned above all account for Riveras as well, furthermore, Riveras is experiencing more site-specific problems. Due to its isolated location, lack of civil amenities, the municipality not taking responsibility, flooding problems, open sewerage, mono-functionality resulting in lack of employment opportunities, lack of public transport and the small size of the houses. The demographic problems concern a concentration of population with low income and low education. A group strategy has been developed that seeks to reconfigure the area spatially, socially and economically in a way that disrupts the mono-functional planning and urban isolation. More specific to my research question is the need for access to health care and education. The research question concerns how a health care clinic department with educational facilities can architecturally contribute to the needs for civic amenities, which in turn might decrease the issue of abandoned housing.Urban AsymmetriesDSDArchitectur
Analysis of FBG reflection spectra under uniform and non-uniform transverse loads
Loads applied transversely on the external surface of waveguides change their circular cross-sectional geometry generating
birefringence. Due to this effect the reflected spectrum of a Fibre Bragg grating (FBG) undergoes a splitting of the single
peak of the Bragg wavelength. In this work, we employed the Transfer Matrix Method (TMM) for x- and y-polarized
wave-modes to model the uniform FBG reflection spectra for uniform and non-uniform transverse loads. We also
performed experimental measurements for two different transverse load scenarios. The load profiles chosen for these
experiments were applied on the FBG sensor through a block of steel and a roll bearing pin. Then, the modelled and
experimental results were compared resulting in good agreement of 85% (on average). Finally, during the roll bearing pin
loading test, different responses were observed depending how the FBGs were surface mounted. To investigate this, the
glue layer influence on the reflected spectrum was further studied experimentally
The Anthropotekton: The Tectonics of Subjectivity and the Methodology of the Accident
Locating many of the contemporary architect’s flaws and shortcomings in its own process of becoming-subject, the Manual of the Anthropotekton aims at activating and situating the architectural student, practitioner, and educator in the position to launch an affirmative deconstruction of their own individuating Ego. This is accomplished through an exercise of semi-biographical introspection carried out by the author in which the ego’s structure along with its detrimental implications and inherent fragility is examined. A special emphasis is placed on the role that the ego plays in producing, via the consecration of authorship, the figure of the contemporary architect as a major obstacle for the productive and democratic proliferation of spatial knowledge, as well as one that perpetuates the extractivist and exploitative systems of economic and social production. This will lead to the proposal of an alternative construction of human subjectivity and, by extent, of the architect, that rejects the omnipotence of the architectural hero and embraces the notions of serendipity and the accident as the most important methodological drivers of sensible, suitable, and successful architectural interventions. By virtue of placing the accident in the foreground of architectural praxis, both the architect and its knowledge are liberated from the authorial chains of the ego, maximizing the proliferation of spatial strategies and the activation of local agents and communities, allowing for a collaborative, collective, inclusive and structural approach to any spatial conflict, which is much harder to provoke through traditional praxis.
