Conservation of Galápagos land iguanas: genetic monitoring and predictions of a long-term program on the island of Santa Cruz

The distribution of the Galápagos land iguanas Conolophus subcristatus has been strongly affected by human activities in the last century. Previously widespread throughout the whole archipelago, today they inhabit only few islands, with populations often small and isolated. In this study, we analyzed the population genetic structure of land iguanas from Santa Cruz Island to investigate the genetic implications of a semi-captive conservation program that started in middle 1970s and is still ongoing. Nine microsatellites were used to measure the level of genetic variability and to detect potential evidence of inbreeding and genetic sub-structure. Furthermore, we used approximate Bayesian computation, together with software packages for coalescent-based simulations, to test a priori hypotheses in different demographic scenarios. Despite the abrupt reduction in size of the original population, no evidence of inbreeding was found, and the levels of genetic variability were similar to those of undisturbed populations of the archipelago. Nevertheless, the source and the repatriated populations started differentiating (FST=0.016) and genetic sub-structure was found. Following our results and the simulation of possible future scenarios, we suggest the genetic measures that should be adopted to avoid further genetic variability depletion and preserve this vulnerable endemic species

Evaluating USA’s New Nutrition and Supplement Facts Label: Evidence from a Non-hypothetical Choice Experiment

    No full text
In May 2016, the FDA published new rules for Nutrition and Supplement Facts label formats and contents, which take effect in 2019. The revised labelling is designed to help consumers make better-informed product choices in support of a healthier diet. Changes in nutrition label requirements include the prominent display of "calories per serving" and "serving size" as well as updated nutritional requirements and information reflecting contemporary scientific knowledge about diet-disease relationships. No other known study however has directly examined whether these new upcoming changes will help consumers make healthier choices. To fill this void, we conducted a non-hypothetical choice experiment on "light" and "original" strawberry yogurt products at a major public University in the USA. Using a generalized mixed logit model with a scale parameter to account for taste heterogeneity among participants, we find that the new label changes food choice behavior. Specifically, we find that the new label reduces consumer's preferences for both original and low-fat yogurts. This finding is evident among the more health-conscious subsample. It is possible that the new label generates an "alarm" effect given the revised features on calories, added sugar and serving size, especially among those who are more nutrition and health conscious and those who use labels for nutrient information

    A 2 h periodic variation in the low-mass X-ray binary Ser X-1

Spectroscopy of the low-mass X-ray binary Ser X-1 using the Gran Telescopio Canarias have revealed a ?2 h periodic variability that is present in the three strongest emission lines. We tentatively interpret this variability as due to orbital motion, making it the first indication of the orbital period of Ser X-1. Together with the fact that the emission lines are remarkably narrow, but still resolved, we show that a main-sequence K dwarf together with a canonical 1.4 M? neutron star gives a good description of the system. In this scenario, the most likely place for the emission lines to arise is the accretion disc, instead of a localized region in the binary (such as the irradiated surface or the stream-impact point), and their narrowness is due instead to the low inclination (?10°) of Ser X-1

Mesophilic-hydrothermal-thermophilic (M-H-T) digestion of green corn straw

Mesophilic-hydrothermal (80-160 degrees C, 30 min)-thermophilic (M-H-T) digestion and control tests of mesophilic (M), thermophilic (T), hydrothermal-mesophilic (H-M), and mesophilic-thermophilic digestion (M-T) of green corn straw were conducted for a 20-day fermentation period. The results indicate that M-H-T is an efficient method to improve methane production. A maximum methane yield of 371.74 mL/g volatile solid was obtained by the M (3 days)-H (140 degrees C)-T (17 days) process, which was 20.44%, 16.55%, 31.44%, and 14.31% higher than the yields of the M, T, 140-M, and M-T processes. The enhanced methane production was attributed to (1) the improved hemicellulose degradation and lignin disorganization; (2) prevention of the degradation of soluble sugar, easily hydrolyzed hemicellulose and cellulose into furfural and methylfurfural; and (3) lack of formation of Maillard reaction products during initial hydrothermal treatment. Contribution of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in Country’S H-Index

    No full text
The aim of this study is to examine the effect of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) development on country’s scientific ranking as measured by H-index. Moreover, this study applies ICT development sub-indices including ICT Use, ICT Access and ICT skill to find the distinct effect of these sub-indices on country’s H-index. To this purpose, required data for the panel of 14 Middle East countries over the period 1995 to 2009 is collected. Findings of the current study show that ICT development increases the H-index of the sample countries. The results also indicate that ICT Use and ICT Skill sub-indices positively contribute to higher H-index but the effect of ICT access on country’s H-index is not clear.Cite as: FARHADI, M., SALEHI, H., EMBI, M.
