No full textA portrait of Mrs. Annie Day Shepard Smith, who was the daughter of Dr. James E. Shepard, founder of North Carolina Central University. Annie Day Shepard Smith was a graduate of North Carolina College. After her husband's death in 1953, she operated the I. H. Smith Realty Company until 1973. She was a member of St. Cyprian's Episcopal Church and was the first woman elected to the vestry. She also served several terms as President of the Ruth and Naomi Group of St. Cyprians. She was a board member for the Good Shepard Hospital and the West Street Public Library. Mrs. Smith was a charter member of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority of New Bern

No full textThe success of Disney’s 1964 movie Mary Poppins has often obscured the fact the popular series of books describing the experiences of the enigmatic nanny were in fact written by the Australian born author P.L. Travers.
Travers’ own sense of ownership of her creation in turn obscured the contribution made by the illustrator Mary Shepard. Despite a 54 year collaboration, Shepard is regularly ignored in discussions of the books: the 2013 movie Saving Mr Banks, which detailed the genesis of the film, did not even mention Shepard or the pivotal role she played in the books’ success.
