ABSTRACT. This paper presents the on-going annual Cross-Cultural Connections (CCC) project between students at Smith College, a small private women’s college in Massachusetts, and students at Télécom ParisTech, a leading French engineering school. First created in the 2003-4 academic year, and progressively refined during its six annual editions, the CCC project consists of a series of asynchronous activities aimed at increasing the students’ sensitivity to intercultural questions (Massachusetts Institute of technology – MIT- Cultura questionnaires, web forums, posted biographies and photos, “images cadeaux”, mini-group projects, cultural postal packages, comparisons of films…) punctuated by weekly transatlantic real-time meetings throughout the semester — whole-group videoconferences and mini-group webcam sessions

A Digital Humanities Approach” FRN 340: “Social Networking in Early Modern France—A Digital Humanities Approach” This course examines the social practices, spaces and networks that defined 17th- and 18th-century France, politically and culturally, from the height of the Ancien Régime up to the French Revolution. Students are also exposed to Digital Humanities methods and theories, combining the study and praxis of these approaches. As a jointly taught, cross-campus course, students at Smith and Wellesley share a common syllabus and engage in parallel assignments. Through this endeavor we aim to foster digital collaboration among students in ways that lead them to reflect on how their use of digital methods and virtual teamwork change the ways in which they produce, share and disseminate knowledge

Sexualized Collaborations and the Politics of Ghost-Writing in Franco-Arab Literature: From Paul Bowles to Tout le Monde Aime Mohamed

    No full text
In the last few decades, the landscape of Franco-Arab fiction has seen a great many authorship scandals, in which French non-Arab authors have impersonated Arabs and found publishing success. In this essay, I revisit these scandals while focusing on a recent “autobiographical” novel that raised suspicions of ghostwriting: 2011’s Tout le monde aime Mohamed (Everyone Loves Mohamed ) by Malik Kuzman. An impressionistic collage of homo-erotic encounters, its fleeting structure recalls that of Barthes’ Incidents, a series of social vignettes culled from the author’s time in Morocco. I explore the simultaneity of Barthes’ Death of the Author argument and the emergence of these authorship scandals in post-colonial Franco-Arab fiction, and suggest that it is not accidental. In a similar vein, I analyze how the heritage of literary collaborations between Europeans and North Africans, often eroticized, has informed authorship scandals in post-immigration France

Foy & Gibson (also known as Foys) was one of Australia's earliest department store chains, modelled on Le Bon Marché in Paris and other European and American stores of the period. A large range of goods were manufactured and sold by the company including clothing, manchester, leather goods, soft furnishings, furniture, hardware and food. The first store was established as a drapery in Smith Street, Collingwood, Victoria by Mark Foy. Ownership of this business was transferred to his son Francis Foy in partnership with Willam Gibson in March, 1883. Francis Foy later sold his half share of the business to Gibson and moved to Sydney, establishing Mark Foys there. Gibson established a branch of the business in Perth and subsequently opened a store in Brisbane in 1903 and another in Rundle Street, Adelaide in 1907. In 1955, the company was bought out by Cox Brothers and in 1964, Foy & Gibson (WA) Ltd, including ten stores in Western Australia, was sold to David Jones. The Bourke Street Melbourne store was sold to Woolworths in 1967. Includes advertisements from Smith Street traders, previous Miss Australia/Victoria winners, and local community historical news, including the history of the Foy & Gibson Company.Gibson's partnership with Mark Foy was dissolved after a disagreement in mid-1884, and William Gibson became the sole proprietor. By the early 20th century Gibson's store and manufacturing works, one of the largest employers in Victoria, dominated the Wellington and Smith Streets area [of Collingwood, Melbourne]. A second store - the Big Store - opened in Chapel Street, Prahran, in 1902. After Gibson died in 1918, the firm was carried on by his nephew John Maclellan until it was taken over in 1955 by Cox Brothers, which went into liquidation in 1968. Le Miroir de la sympathie. Adam Smith et le sentimentalisme

    No full text

A tectonic shift has occurred in the gastronomic field in France, upsetting the cultural imagination. In a European country captivated by a high-stakes power struggle between chefs and restaurants in the culinary field, the mass marketing of factory-processed industrial cuisine and fast foods has created shock waves in French society, culture, and the economy. In this insightful book, French Gastronomy and the Magic of Americanism, Rick Fantasia examines how national identity and the dynamics of cultural meaning-making within gastronomy have changed during a crucial period of transformation, from the 1970s through the 1990s. He illuminates the tensions and surprising points of cooperation between the skill, expertise, tradition, artistry, and authenticity of grand chefs and the industrial practices of food production, preparation, and distribution. Fantasia examines the institutions and beliefs that have reinforced notions of French cultural supremacy—such as the rise and reverence of local cuisine—as well as the factors that subvert those notions, such as when famous French chefs lend their names to processed, frozen, and pre-packaged foods available at the supermarket. Ultimately, French Gastronomy and the Magic of Americanism shows what happens to a cultural field, like French gastronomy, when the logic and power of the economic field imposes itself upon it.https://scholarworks.smith.edu/soc_books/1003/thumbnail.jp
