Disengaged and disaffected young people: surviving the system
Get PDFThere are counter narratives of youth as at risk and as buoyant and agentive. The article maps the conceptual terrain concerning resilience, wellbeing, buoyancy, enjoyment and happiness and selects two factors related to the successful navigation of schooling, a self-sense of competence and relatedness to others. It analyses data from a subset of a national dataset, from sixty five young people considered to be disaffected or disengaged by their school or college. It explores the perceptions of young people that the difficulties they encounter are in part a result of their own behaviour and in part a product of the system. Hirschman’s theory of exit voice, loyalty is used to explore their choices. The articles concludes that schools act to maintain homeostasis and that a subset of young people are at long term risk due to organisational and national unwillingness to decouple economic benefit from maintenance of the existing system
Managing further education: learning enterprise
No full textThe incorporation of the further education sector in 1993 was followed by a period of extreme turbulence. Colleges plunged into the complex task of managing huge organizations while under pressure from cuts in funding and a steady expansion in the number and range of students. While financial scandals may have attracted attention, the success of the further education sector in continuing to provide a vital educational service for millions of people has been less recognized.
Despite the significant contribution of the sector to education and training, practitioners struggle to find adequate research evidence on which to base reflection and practice. They need material relevant to the specific situation of managers working within this very hybrid sector, part public sector education and part commercial organization, catering for an age and ability range greater than that of any other educational sector.
Based on a national survey of college managers, this book investigates how managers are responding to the challenge to increase the numbers and range of students and to improve learning and teaching. The author shows what it means to lead in a college and how the culture has evolved. Each chapter focuses on an aspect of management. The book concludes that 'learning enterprise' is an apt description of further education, a sector which has retained learning at its core and has learned to adopt an entrepreneurial spirit to shape its future.<br/

No full textThis contribution examines the effect of ADSL on VDSL when both reside in a single binder group. The potential loss in VDSL bit rate due to the presence of ADSL is qualified using channel capacity arguments. Of particular interest is the impact of the ADSL PSD beyond 1.104 MHz on VDSL performance, as high-level ADSL energy in this region can substantially impair achievable VDSL bit rates. The contribution shows that upstream VDSL channels are affected severely by ADSL NEXT, and downstream VDSL channels are degraded by ADSL FEXT. It is concluded that ADSL energy beyond 1.104 MHz substantially degrades VDSL performance in both the upstream and downstream directions. No full textDespite the notorious inadequacy of tourism statistics and the fluctuations of the policy of mountain development, the research devoted to mountain space (especially the Alps), in the geography of tourism, is getting more and more important and diversified. The author of this article presents some of the most remarkable works published on this question during the last few years, more particularly about the patterns of touristic development, the perception of touristic space, the forms of touristic activity, the economic and social impact of tourism, the relationship between tourism and environment.Malgré l'insuffisance notoire de la statistique touristique et les fluctuations de la politique ď aménagement de la montagne, les recherches de géographie du tourisme consacrées à l'espace montagnard (en particulier aux Alpes) apparaissent de plus en plus nombreuses et diversifiées.
