Ages of the Pliocene-Pleistocene Alexandra and Ngatutura Volcanics, western North Island, New Zealand, and some geological implications

The Alexandra and Ngatutura Volcanics are the two southernmost of the Pliocene-Quaternary volcanic fields of western and northern North Island, New Zealand, northwest of Taupo Volcanic Zone TVZ. The Ngatutura Basalts are an alkalic basaltic field comprising monogenetic volcanoes. The Alexandra Volcanics consist of three basaltic magma series: an alkalic (Okete Volcanics), calcalkalic (Karioi, Pirongia, Kakepuku, and Te Kawa Volcanics), and a minor potassic series. Twenty new K-Arages are presented for the Alexandra Volcanics and 9 new ages for the Ngatutura Basalts. Ages of the Alexandra Volcanics range from 2.74 to 1 .60 Ma, and the ages of all three magma series overlap. Ages of the Ngatutura Basalts range from 1 .83 to 1.54 Ma. Each basaltic field has a restricted time range and there is a progressive younging in age of the basaltic fields of western North Island from the Alexandra Volcanics in the south, to Ngatutura, to South Auckland, and then to the Auckland field in the north. Neither of the Alexandra nor Ngatutura Volcanics shows any younging direction of their volcanic centres or any age pattern within their fields, and there is no systematic variation in age with rock composition. Any correlation of age with degree of erosion of volcanic cones is invalid for these basaltic fields; instead, the degree of erosion may be controlled by the lithology of the cones and possibly by the extent of preservation offered by the thick cover deposits of the Kauroa, Hamilton, and younger tephra beds. Stratigraphic relations have enabled the earliest member of the Kauroa Ash Formation to be dated at 2.3 Ma. This formation represents a series of widespread rhyolitic plinian and ignimbrite eruptions probably derived from TVZ and initiated during the Late Pliocene

Nikolai Evreinov and Edith Craig as Mediums of Modernist Sensibility

Nikolai Evreinov (1870-1953) was a Russian playwright, director, and theorist of the theatre who played a leading part in the modernist movement of Russian theatre. Evreinov's 1911 monodrama The Theatre of the Soul (V kulisakh dushi) was staged by the Crooked Mirror theatre in St Petersburg in 1912. It was also performed in London (1915) and Rome (1929), and inspired Man Ray to create his aerograph The Theatre of the Soul (1917). In this article Alexandra Smith links Evreinov's play to Russian modernist thought shaped by the atmosphere of crisis associated with the Russo-Japanese War and the first Russian Revolution. It demonstrates that Edith Craig's production of Evreinov's play suggests that the philosophy of theatricalization of everyday life might enable modern subjects to overcome the fragmentation of modern society. Craig's use of the montage-like techniques of Evreinov's play prefigures cinematographic experiments of the 1920s and Marinetti's notion of synthetic theatre. Alexandra Smith is a Reader in Russian Studies at the University of Edinburgh and is the author of The Song of the Mockingbird: Pushkin in the Works of Marina Tsvetaeva (1994) and Montaging Pushkin: Pushkin and Visions of Modernity in Russian Twentieth-Century Poetry (2006), as well as numerous articles on Russian literature and culture.</p

Stages for the More Sustainable Farm

    No full text
Currently, agricultural farm units are faced with a double and most times contradictory challenge, in order to be successful: on the one hand the invested capital has to be profitable and the economic performance has to be maximised. On the other hand, given the socio-environmental situation, it is necessary to preserve and to protect the environment and natural resources. Given the potential conflict of the two aims, since the satisfaction of one implies the underperformance of the other (and vice versa), the question then is: which is the solution to choose? We intend, in this work, to formulate a farm plan with the purpose of reconciling the criteria of environmental sustainability with that of economic competitiveness. For this achievement we proceed to the comparative study of sustainability of different groups of farms identified in the study area (first evaluation cycle) through MESMIS (“Marco para la Evaluación de Sistemas de Manejo de Recursos Naturales Mediante Indicadores de Sustentabilidad” - Framework for Evaluation of Natural-Resource Systems Handling through Sustainability Indicators) methodology, that allowed to select the more sustainable group of farms. Based on the found potentialities and weakness on these production systems, we stepped to the planning of a production unit of bovine meat, which obeys simultaneously to economic and environmental objectives, using Multicriteria Decision. We finished the work with the sustainability evaluation between groups of farms identified previously and the planned farms (second evaluation cycle), based, again, in the MESMIS methodology, to confirm (or not) the greatest sustainability of the last ones. Analyses of the results allow us to confirm the greatest relative sustainability of the planned farm, for the diverse traced scenarios.Decision taking, planning, sustainability, Environmental Economics and Policy, Farm Management,

The role of gender, sexual trauma and psychopathology in predicting sexual boundary violation risk among psychotherapists

Boundary violations are a topic of great concern in the ethics of psychotherapy. Prior literature suggests that minor boundary violations can lead to sexual boundary violations. The current study anonymously surveyed therapists (N=220) who reported treating adolescent clients (aged 10-19 years old). We administered demographic questions and several self-report measures such as the Boundary Violation Index (BVI), Social Desirability Scale (SDS), Trauma History Screen (THS), and Trauma Symptom Checklist-40 (TSC-40). We constructed a sexual boundary risk subscale from the larger Boundary Violation Index (BVI) and showed that it had adequate internal consistency. We identified many potential correlations of sexual boundary violation risk focusing on gender, sexual trauma, and psychopathology. A hierarchical regression analysis accounted for social desirability, adult sexual trauma history, age, education/training, adolescent age, psychopathology (depression, dissociation, sexual abuse trauma, and sexual problems), number of adolescents in the caseload, type of practice, and years of experience, but still found that male gender was a significant predictor of elevated sexual boundary violation risk. Among types of psychopathology, sexual problems emerged as the only significant predictor. Limitations of the study include exclusive reliance on self-report measures and the failure to assess sexual orientation. Strengths of the study include the use of well-established measures and the anonymity of the survey. Recommendations are offered for preventing sexual boundary violations through workshops (e.g., gender-sensitivity), personal counseling (especially targeting sexual problems), and supervision

Social Behavior and Youth Psychopathology during the COVID-19 Pandemic: A Longitudinal Study

    No full text
The early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic and associated stay-at-home orders resulted in a stark reduction in daily social interactions for children and adolescents. Given that peer relationships are especially important during this developmental stage, it is crucial to understand the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on social behavior and risk for psychopathology in children and adolescents. In a longitudinal sample (N=224) of children (7-10y) and adolescents (13-15y) assessed at three strategic time points (before the pandemic, during the initial stay-at-home order period, and six months later after the initial stay-at-home order period was lifted), we examine whether certain social factors protect against increases in stress-related psychopathology during the pandemic, controlling for pre-pandemic symptoms. Youth who reported less in-person and digital socialization, greater social isolation, and less social support had worsened psychopathology during the pandemic. Greater social isolation and decreased digital socialization during the pandemic were associated with greater risk for psychopathology after experiencing pandemic-related stressors. In addition, children, but not adolescents, who maintained some in-person socialization were less likely to develop internalizing symptoms following exposure to pandemic-related stressors. We identify social factors that promote well-being and resilience in youth during this societal event

From Urges to Action: Negative Urgency and Nonsuicidal Self-Injury in an Acute Transdiagnostic Sample

    No full text
Urgency–rash action during strong emotion–is a robust correlate of nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI). This study tested whether urgency is associated with time between NSSI urges and NSSI, and sought to replicate the finding that urgency is associated with NSSI history. Participants attending a partial hospitalization program (N = 669) completed self-report measures of urgency, NSSI history and latency, and psychiatric symptoms. Consistent with previous research in clinical samples, rates of lifetime engagement in NSSI were high. Using logistic regression to predict short vs. long latency between urges and NSSI, no significant relationship emerged between negative urgency and latency to self-injure. Negative urgency more than doubled the likelihood of NSSI history (p \u3c .001, OR = 2.39). In addition, exploratory analyses revealed several links between NSSI latency and negative urgency. Results confirm that urgency is robustly related to NSSI, yet also suggest that more research is needed to understand how urgency relates to the parameters of NSSI within those who self-injure. Use of retrospective self-report measures may limit the ability to test links between urgency and latency of NSSI

    Phyllodactylus lanei Smith

Phyllodactylus lanei Smith (Lane's Leaf-toed Gecko) Specimens analyzed: one male (CEAC 3), one female (CEAC 4). Distribution: a Mexican endemic, with records from Nayarit, Guerrero, Jalisco, and Michoacán, and possibly Colima. Subspecies: P. l. lanei: Guerrero; P. l. rupinus: Nayarit, coastal Jalisco, southern Michoacán; and two insular Subspecies: P. l. lupitae and P. l. isabelae (Castro-Franco & Uribe-Pena 1992). Karyotype: karyological data in P. l a n e i were restricted to a report that described karyotypes of specimens from the state of Guerrero, that probably belong to P. l. lanei, 2 n = 33–34 and FN = 40–41 (King 1981). The karyotype of specimens from Chamela region belonging to P. l. rupinus has been recently described (Castiglia et al. 2009). It shows 2 n = 38 and FN = 38, composed of 19 pairs of acrocentric chromosomes. Thus the karyptypes belonging to the two subspecies differ by the presence of two pairs of large metacentric chromosomes in P. l. l a n e i that are absent in P. l. rupinus. The slight difference in the fundamental number found in the two samples is probably due to a different interpretation of the very small short arms (see Castiglia et al. 2009 for details). Moreover, in the karyotype from Guerrero, a pair of heteromorphic chromosomes was also observed. In females, one of the homologues of this pair was described as bi-armed (with tiny short arms) and this was considered, by the author, a possible ZW sex chromosome system. However, in the studied individuals from Chamela, no chromosome pairs showed a visible heteromorphic condition (Castiglia et al. 2009). DNA taxonomy: a single sequence (rDNA 16 S) of P. l a n e i from Guerrero is available in GeneBank (Blair et al. 2009). This sequence possibly belongs to P. l. lanei. The genetic divergence between the haplotypes from Chamela and those from Guerrero is relatively high, (8.4–8.7%; 449 bp). This divergence is similar to that found among three insular subspecies belong to P. wirshingi, which are considered full species by Weiss and Hedges (2007). Because of the high chromosomal and genetic differences found between the specimens from Guerrero and Jalisco, is plausible the elevation of P. l. rupinus to a specific rank. However, molecular analysis from the type locality of P. l. rupinus (Lombardia, Michoacan, Mexico) are needed before any definitive taxonomic change can be made.Published as part of Castiglia, Riccardo, Annesi, Flavia, Bezerra, Alexandra M. ALEXANDER McCALL SMITH IN LITERARNI LIKI V NJEGOVIH DETEKTIVSKIH ROMANIH

Alexander McCall Smith\u27s novels are gaining more and more readers in Slovenia as well as around the worldthe most popular of his works is The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency series, which currently consists of 13 books. For this thesis I wanted to find out what is the main appeal of the series and what are the reasons behind its popularity. Although the two most important characters in the novels are detectives and the series revolves around different types of crime and their solving, the novels are not typical detective fiction. They do not feature any murder cases, and the two detectives deal only with everyday problems, such as theft, fraud, adultery, and searching for missing people. Mma Ramotswe, the protagonist, is a private detective who solves crime with humour, intuition, and without any detective knowledge. The novels take place in the Southern African country of Botswanatherefore, the works feature appealing descriptions of Botswana’s scenery and customs but do not deal extensively with Botswana’s biggest problem: AIDS. Therefore they do not provide the reader with a completely accurate description of the country. The literary characters are well-madean important characteristic of this series is that characters are shown as good people – even Mma Ramotswe, when solving cases, mostly relies on human kindness and consciousness that the right thing has to be done. The author does not show the characters only as good people, but as human beings with bad and good sides. Literarni liki so dobro izdelani.
