    La dialectique de la violence dans l'oeuvre de Richard Wright : approche psycho-existentielle de l'acte meurtrier centrée sur trois héros : Big Boy, Bigger Thomas, Cross Damon

    The present dissertation argues that the theme of violence, which pervades Wright’s work, is rooted in the emotional insecurity to which the author was the heir from his childhood in the south. Consequently, Big Boy, Bigger Thomas, Cross Damon represent different phases in Wright’s spiritual development. Big Boy is an adamic character. But the process of violence in which he is propelled implies, for him, the end of innocence. He flees to Chicago to reappear in the traits of a morbid character : Bigger Thomas. The hero of Native Son is an archetype, for his overwhelming feelings spring from the long tradition of the Negro’s oppression in America. With The Outsider, Wright goes beyond racial themes to explore, in a philosophical perspective, the human condition on earth. Man's fate is absurd. This truth turns Cross Damon into a nihilist. But in the final analysis, the author invites mankind to more solidarity.Cet ouvrage comprend quatre grands axes. Le premier axe fait état des traumatismes vécus par l'auteur dans son enfance et postule que la création littéraire a permis à Wright de surmonter les complexes infantiles. En d'autres termes, la récurrence du personnage meurtrier dans son oeuvre sera un moyen de liquidation de sa propre violence. Ainsi, Big Boy, Bigger Thomas, Cross Damon semblent autant de "doubles monstrueux" de l'auteur. Ils représentent chacun une étape dans l'évolution spirituelle de l'auteur, aussi bien que dans sa conception de la violence. Big Boy est le type même de l' "Adam américain". Le processus de violence dans lequel il est engagé constitue une marche vers une nouvelle "frontière" : Chicago. Dans cette ville, Big Boy l'"Adam blessé", renaît sous les traits d'un personnage morbide : Bigger Thomas. D'où une approche psychopathologique du héros de Native Son. The Outsider fait l'objet du 3e axe. Dans ce livre, la problématique de la violence opère un glissement, elle n'est plus posée sous l'angle d'une pathologie raciale. L'histoire de l'outsider noir, Cross Damon, est une réflexion sur le "Dasein", et souligne l'absurdité de l'aventure humaine.     Sclerotinia stem rot (SSR) of soybean caused by Sclerotinia sclerotiorum is a devastating disease of soybean, especially in the Upper Midwest region of the United States. To mitigate yield losses due to this disease, many control methods are available for producers, including cultural control practices, chemical control, and cultivars with quantitative resistance. However, due to there being few commercial cultivars with high levels of resistance, producers are often limited in their seed selection. The aim of this study was to develop novel conventional soybean cultivars with high levels of resistance to SSR, favorable agronomic traits, and resistance to additional economically important diseases. Initial crosses were conducted in 2016 with two different sources of SSR resistance. Across multiple generations of screening for resistance to SSR, three highly resistant soybean lines were identified as the elite lines. These elite lines were demonstrated to be highly resistant across multiple years in both greenhouse and field trials, including high levels of resistance to multiple diverse S. sclerotiorum isolates. The three selected elite lines also resulted in moderately high yields and favorable agronomic traits, such as low lodging and moderate branching, indicating their viability to be released for production. In addition to SSR resistance, these three elite lines demonstrated resistance to other economically important soybean diseases, such as frogeye leaf spot, anthracnose, Cercospora leaf blight, and brown stem rot.     Dipolar spin waves in uniaxial easy-axis antiferromagnets: A natural topological nodal-line semimetal

    The existence of magnetostatic surface spin waves in ferromagnets, known as the Damon-Eshbach mode, was recently demonstrated to originate from the topology of the dipole-dipole interaction. In this work, we study the topological characteristics of magnons in easy-axis antiferromagnets with uniaxial anisotropy. The dipolar spin waves are found to be, driven by the dipole-dipole interaction, in a topological nodal-line semimetal phase, which hosts Damon-Eshbach-type surface modes due to the bulk-edge correspondence. The long-wavelength character of dipolar spin waves makes our proposal valid for any natural uniaxial easy-axis antiferromagnet and, thus, enriches the candidates of topological magnonic materials. In contrast to the nonreciprocal property in the ferromagnetic case, surface modes with opposite momentum coexist at each surface, but with different chiralities. Such chirality-momentum or spin-momentum locking, similar to that of electronic surface states in topological insulators, offers the opportunity to design novel chirality-based magnonic devices in antiferromagnets.QN/Akhmerov Grou

    Biology and Epidemiology of Sclerotinia minor on Peanut (Arachis hypogaea L.)

    Sclerotinia blight caused by the fungus Sclerotinia minor is a serious disease of cultivated peanut (Arachis hypogaea L.) in North Carolina. Laboratory and field experiments were conducted to gain a better understanding of how environment affects sclerotial germination, mycelial growth, and plant infection in soil. Furthermore, quantitative relationships between disease incidence, severity, environmental factors, and yield loss were examined in order to improve disease forecasting systems in North Carolina. Laboratory and field experiments also were conducted to gain a better understanding of the biology of both the host and fungus. Experiments were conducted to evaluate the relative importance of tissue resistance vs. plant architecture in highperforming cultivars. In the laboratory, soil matric potential (&#936;M) and temperature effects were measured for germination of sclerotia, mycelial expansion, and lesion expansion on detached leaflets. Temperature effect on the production of oxalic acid by mycelium of S. minor was also examined. Maximum sclerotial germination occurred at a &#936;M of -7.2 kPa and a temperature of 30 C. Rate of mycelial expansion and lesion development and expansion on detached leaflets were maximal at temperatures of 18-22 C. Lesions on detached leaflets developed slowly at temperatures above 26 C, and failed to develop at temperatures of 29 C or greater. Lesions formed if inoculated leaflets were moved from 29 C to a cooler temperature of 18 or 22 C. Oxalic acid production at temperatures above 29 C was negligible. In the field, incidence of Sclerotinia blight was measured at three sites in 2002 and 2003. A gradient of disease levels was established by utilizing one partially resistant cultivar, two susceptible cultivars and the fungicides fluazinam and boscalid at various rates. Weather data were collected in 2003 and modeled in both years. Disease incidence was highest on the susceptible cultivars with no fungicide treatment. Disease incidence of the partially resistant cultivar and of one susceptible cultivar in conjunction with various weather parameters were used as the dependent and independent variables, respectively, in a regression analysis. The following disease prediction model was created: Total Disease = -79.52 + 3.04 relative humidity ? 0.020 relative humidity 2 ? 0.47 soil temperature ? 5.30 leaf wetness. In other laboratory tests, leaflets, pegs, lateral branches, and main stems of two susceptible cultivars and two partially resistant breeding lines were detached from plants grown in the greenhouse, inoculated with mycelial plugs, and placed in moisture chambers. Lesion development and severity on each part were measured for 7 days. In the field three cultivars and one breeding line were planted in replicated plots. Destructive samples of randomly selected plants were made weekly. Numbers of lesions on the four plant parts of interest were counted. Laboratory studies indicated that leaflets and pegs were the most susceptible plant tissues. Main stems and lateral branches were resistant to infection. In the field, however, lesions were found most frequently on lateral branches. Inconsistencies between laboratory and field studies indicate that there are other mechanisms of resistance operating in the field besides physiological resistance. Management strategies should focus on protecting lateral branches from infection by S.minor. Those management strategies may be improved further with the adoption of a Sclerotinia blight disease forecasting system that utilizes remote site-specific weather data with no need for onsite sensors
