Help a Sculpture
Simone Slee is an artist who produces performative-based sculptural works. Failure, humour and vulnerability continue to emerge as issues in her practice. Her sculptures fall over, others exist for just a moment as sculptural-thought-bubbles in public spaces. Photography is frequently used as a document to witness these events. An area of focus is the neologism she invented, called abfunction. This is a word that describes the unexpected or surprising functions of objects or actions, in contrast to the concepts of the multifunctional or dysfunctional. It is the principle of ‘doing the wrong thing with the right thing’ and its inverse of ‘doing the right thing with the wrong thing’.
Simone is the Coordinator of Sculpture and Spatial Practice at the School of Art, VCA & M, University of Melbourne and exhibits with Sarah Scout Presents, Melbourne. She has an undergraduate degree in Sculpture from the VCA, 1995, and in Landscape Architecture (RMIT), a Masters in Fine Art from RMIT, 2000, and is currently a PhD candidate at the VCA & M. She was previously an Anne and Gordon Samstag Scholar at the Staedelschule, Frankfurt am Main, where she was the guest student of Ayse Erkmen in 2004-6. Her work has been exhibited nationally and internationally, notably at Portikus, Frankfurt, in the Dream Universe exhibition of Yoko Ono and was featured as one of the key artists in the 2003 Melbourne International Arts Festival, Visual Arts Program with her On project.
Simone will be giving an overview of her art research and a brief insight into her teaching in Sculpture & Spatial Practice at the VCA & M
Panorama
Commissioned by Susan Daniel-McElroy, Director of Tate St Ives, I produced an installation for the 55- foot long curved exhibition space. This consisted of over 100 ceramic pieces. The catalogue essay ‘Richard Slee, Grand Wizard’ was written by curator and historian, Dr. Oliver Watson of the V&A.
In 2002, I had been commissioned to make an installation at the St Pancras Art and Design Show which led on to working on the idea of a ‘panoramic’ view rather than the fixed perspective of the St Pancras work done in response to the specific high Victorian interior.
Panorama formed a narrative of the imagination that could be read from any point, challenging any linear reading or sequence. The title was chosen not just because of the sweep of the showcase but to present a continuously passing scene that did not rely on a central, classical viewpoint. As Daniel-McElroy succinctly described my thoughts in the catalogue, the work consisted of ‘seemingly desperate elements of a story, including an appropriated rabbit, belle tents, frightened balls of fluff, various weaponry, an aeroplane for a quick getaway, a bedroom snake and one hundred chocolate logs, surrounded a duck who swims against the tide’.
Panorama toured onto the Ruthin Crafts Centre, Wales, then returned by special request to Tate St Ives. An expanded version was exhibited under the title Panoramas for The Pier Arts Centre, Stromness, Orkney
VITAL GESTURES – SIGNS IN MOTION: a dialogue between Sarie Mairs Slee and Scott Thurston
This creative conversation involves a dialogue between poet
Scott Thurston and Sarie Mairs Slee, a choreographer and physical performer. The
concept of gesture holds a rich resonance for their collaborative work and this
essay captures conversation about their current explorations, the longer-term
drivers for their collaboration and the role of gesture therein.Published in Mantis, Issue 17 (April 2017) -- postgraduate magazine based at Stanford University, USA.</div

Investigating and learning lessons from early experiences of implementing ePrescribing systems into NHS hospitals:a questionnaire study
ePrescribing systems have significant potential to improve the safety and efficiency of healthcare, but they need to be carefully selected and implemented to maximise benefits. Implementations in English hospitals are in the early stages and there is a lack of standards guiding the procurement, functional specifications, and expected benefits. We sought to provide an updated overview of the current picture in relation to implementation of ePrescribing systems, explore existing strategies, and identify early lessons learned
A Softbridge with carrier grade reliability using JAIN SLEE
We have built a SoftBridge prototype within a JAIN (Java APIs for the Integrated Network) SLEE (Service Logic Execution Environment). A SoftBridge is a semi-synchronous multimodal IP (Internet Protocol) -based communication system and the first prototype has been built for deaf telephony. This research addresses service life-cycle management for a SoftBridge with carrier grade reliability. An approach is proposed that carrier grade reliability support for a SoftBridge is provided by moving it into a JAIN SLEE. A JAIN SLEE is a general application server, which provides execution and management environment for telecommunication services. An empirical evaluation methodology is adopted to verify that JAIN SLEE enables carrier grade support for a SoftBridge. This work includes the development of functions of a SoftBridge and life-cycle management of a SoftBridge within a JAIN SLEE. Current work is busy in developing multimodal media adaptation functions of the SoftBridge prototype. System test, experiments with PBX (Private Branch Exchange)/PSTN (Public Switched Telephone Network) and evaluation of the SoftBridge prototype will be carried out in the next steps. Carrier grade reliability enables a SoftBridge to access the PSTN. A highly reliable SoftBridge could bring more new value-added services for telecom providers. Using a SoftBridge as an example, we also can learn how to go about carrier grade enhancement for IP-based communication applications in the telecoms domain.Telkom, Cisco, THRI
