Assessment of changes in photosystem II structure and function as affected by water deficit in Amaranthus hypochondriacus L. and Amaranthus hybridus L

    No full text
The present study describes the behaviour of photosystem II (PSII) in Amaranthus hypochondriacus and Amaranthus hybridus under water stress conditions, assessed by the analyses of the polyphasic rise in chlorophyll a fluorescence (O-J-I-P). We determined the adaptive behaviour in relation to the regulation of the different functional and structural parameters of PSII, which was a direct and rapid response due to changes in soil water status indicated by a decrease in leaf water potential and relative water content. It allows for the identification of specific key or limiting chlorophyll fluorescence parameters which could be used to identify traits conveying tolerance. For the above partial processes of PSII function studied, it seems that A. hybridus remained the more stable upon water stress (after 17 days of withholding water), concerning the specific energy fluxes of absorption/reaction centre (ABS/RC) apparent (antenna size) and trapping/reaction centre (TR/RC) (maximum trapping flux), as well as the density of the reaction centres/cross section (RC/CS) and the phenomenological trapping flux/cross section (TRo/CS). It was clear that amaranth adjusts the non-photochemical (kn) deactivation constant of PSII and to a less extend also the photochemical (kp) deactivation constant by means of photoregulation, which forms the basis of the quenching of chlorophyll a fluorescence. Although drought stress caused the deactivation of RCs leading to a decrease in the density of active RCs, the plants compensated by increasing the efficiency of the conversion of trapped excitation energy to electron transport beyond QA (efficiency of exciton trapping/reaction centre: ETo/TRo). Subsequent damage to PSII might be the reason for the slow, or lack of recovery, for most of the parameters measured.http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.plaphy.2011.05.00

A comprehensive typology of philosophical perspectives on Qohelet

    No full text
In this article, the author seeks to provide the first comprehensive typology of philosophical approaches to the book of Qohelet (Ecclesiastes). Six overlapping, yet functionally distinct, meta-philosophical categories are identified, namely (1) general philosophical profiling, (2) ancient philosophical comparisons, (3) modern philosophical comparisons, (4) topical philosophical exegesis, (5) philosophical reception histories and actualisations and (6) antiphilosophical readings. The conclusion of the study is that research on Qohelet in relationship to philosophy is quantitatively more complex and multifaceted than traditional overviews tend to show.Intradisciplinary and/or interdisciplinary implications: This study challenges the context of currently available perspectives on Qohelet in relationship to philosophy, resulting in the provisioning of a quantitatively more functional framework for meta-philosophical commentary, which in turn both demands and makes possible a change in the way philosophical approaches to the text are construed.</p

Development of a leadership model for public schools

Thesis (DTech (Human Resources Management))--Cape Peninsula University of Technology, 2005.This thesis describes a model for developing and implementing leadership strategies in any public school and Education Department in South Africa. To shape this model, first of all, a general literature review was undertaken. Transformational, transactional, developmental, competency-based and instructional leadership, as well as leadership styles, leadership principles, the human dynamics of leadership, qualities of leadership and the role of leadership in change were researched and studied. Although the National Education Department and the Western Cape Education Department place great emphasis on effective leadership, newly appointed educational leaders and managers often feel they would have liked more induction and training regarding leadership than they received. The Western Cape Education Department (WCED) has programmes whereby they do capacity-building work sessions with educational leaders. The mentioned programmes are mostly held once a year for newly appointed leaders in education over a period of two days. An educational leader can only attend a work session once. The educational leader has a great responsibility towards all stakeholders and must therefore be well equipped as a leader. However, many problems regarding the lack of leadership skills, effectiveness, managing of the curriculum, staff and resources in schools have necessitated the Western Cape Education Department to bring out a circular on effective leadership, emphasising the role and responsibilities of the educational leader regarding effective leadership and management. The Education Department wants to maintain the efficacy of academic, leadership and managerial standards at schools. A well structured developmental, corrective training mechanism is an attempt to deal with the poor work performance and abilities of principals and senior staff members. The national minister of education, Mrs. Grace Naledi Pandor now recently made a announcement that she intend to empower educational leaders through workshops in 2006 regarding their responsibilities, leadership capacity, and effectiveness. Against this background, the researcher undertook a survey to determine the extent to which leadership strategies are being employed at schools in the Western Cape. A questionnaire Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire (MLQ) was used to gather information and data. Structured interviews and a focus group discussion were also held

Possible objections to a philosophical approach to ancient Israelite religion: A critical refutation

    No full text
There exists a certain consensus amongst biblical scholars that involving philosophy in the attempt to understand ancient Israelite religion is hermeneutically fallacious. A philosophical approach to ancient Yahwism is considered out of place, given the non-philosophical nature of the Hebrew Bible, the normative concerns of philosophy and the historical agenda of biblical scholarship. In this article, however, the author attempted to show why none of the traditional objections should be considered as devastating as they were once thought to be

The Hebrew Bible in contemporary philosophy of religion

    No full text
Some dialogue among these specialists, especially between biblical scholars and philosophers of religion, is unquestionably long overdue.(Stump 1985:1)Over the last few decades, there has been an increased concern for the establishment of more sustained interdisciplinary dialogue between biblical scholars and philosophers of religion. In this article, aimed at biblical scholars, the author as biblical scholar offers a descriptive and historical overview of some samples of recourse to the Hebrew Bible in philosophical approaches in the study of religion. The aim is to provide a brief glimpse of how some representative philosophers from both the analytic and continental sides of the methodological divide have related to the biblical traditions in the quest for a contemporary relevant Christian philosophy of religion.</p

Piccolo dizionario ortografico resiano/Mali bisidnik za to jost rozajanske pisanje

This print dictionary is intended as an orthographic manual for native users that are writing a text in standard Resian or in one of the four main local dialects. The 2,740 head words are in standard Resian and indexes for Italian and the four local dialects are provided. The orthography used is the one explained in Ortografia resiana/Tö jost rozajanskë pïsanjë, Padova: CLEUP, 1994 by the same author. The dictionary has been created by generating a PDF document from the XML source document by means of XSL-FO style sheets. Thse style sheets suppress all strictly dialectological information present in the source document but not deemed necessary for an orthographic manual
