The Fukushima nuclear accident temporarily increased patients reluctance for nuclear medicine investigations.

Only mentioning the word "nuclear" already creates anxiety and distress. We attempted to assess the impact of the media hype about the Fukushima event on patients admitted in nuclear medicine units to undergo diagnostic investigations. The number of patients denying scintigraphic studies over half a year after the Fukushima accident was compared with the same period of the 2 previous years 2009 and 2010. Data were separately analyzed into thyroid vs. other organ scintigraphies. Physicians' referrals to nuclear medicine showed no decline. Patients undergoing various organ scintigraphies asked questions related to the accident but only few of them denied the investigation. Questioning and denial for nuclear medicine tests were more frequent in females as compared to males and especially in child-bearing females. Among patients referred in the initial post-event phase for thyroid function tests, more than 10% denied thyroid scintigraphy and 2.75% questioned this test. Again, questioning and denial was higher with females, especially in child-bearing age. In conclusion, this study showed that nuclear accidents and perhaps irresponsible media reports may affect behaviour of patients referred for nuclear medicine studies and in particular for thyroid scintigraphy even if these accidents had no radioactive effect to them

The freeze-etching method has been applied for the ultrastructural investigation of human blood platelets. The results are in agreement with the data from animal platelets. The platelet plasma membrane shows a large number of randomly dispersed small particles with diameters of 5-15 nm. Moreover, there exist invaginations on the plasma membrane with a diameter of 30-150 nm called protuberances which seem to represent the morphological aspect of exocytotoxic processes. In the cytoplasm α-granula, dense bodies, open canalicular systems, which are in contact with the plasma membrane, dense tubular system, glycogen, Golgi-apparatus and sometimes microtubules, microfilaments and mitochondria can be distinguished. The practicability of this method for the investigation of pathological platelet membrane alterations is discussed

Etofibrate enhances 123I-LDL-binding in human liver.

Etofibrate, a combination of fibric and nicotinic acid, is successfully used for the treatment of type IIb and IV hyperlipidemia. While an up-regulation of specific low density lipoproteins (LDL) binding sites in human platelets has been demonstrated, action on LDL-binding to the liver in patients and kinetic studies rare. This study aimed to investigate the influence of twice 500mg etofibrate daily given for 6 weeks on the in vivo binding of autologous LDL to the liver in 11 patients, 6 males, 5 females; aged 37-57 years, suffering from mixed hyperlipidemia. Etofibrate enhanced in vivo liver uptake of 123I-LDL by 16.1% at mean, shortened plasma decay of LDL and improved lipid profile: serum total cholesterol was lowered by 14.9%, LDL-cholesterol was lowered by 22.2% and high-density lipoprotein (HDL)-cholesterol was increased by 10.9%. These findings are documenting a beneficial effect of the drug at the LDL liver receptor level in vivo

Effects of prostacyclin on ultrastructural features of human platelets in vitro

Examining platelets plasma-membrane by freeze-etching (FE)-technique irregularly place among the "particles", some larger formations, called by us "protuberances" can be seen. These protuberances may represent the stomata of the open canalicular system (OCS) and the morphological aspect of an exocytotic process. Addition of prostacyclin to platelet rich plasma (PRP) leads to a decrease of the average value of protuberances which is statistically significant in comparison to control platelets
