New Studies of the Structure and the Texts of Abba Garima Ethiopian Gospels
The article presents a codicological study of the three ancient Ethiopian Gospels of Abba Garima. The author rearranges the sequence of the disordered folios of the manuscripts in detailed tables, proposes a new foliation system and proceeds to catalogue-like descriptions. Attentive inspection of each folio led to the discovery of original quire numbers as well as original and later liturgical annotations put in folio margins, among which there are liturgical rubrics in rare unvocalized consonantal script. Detailed tables of Gospel pericopes and of dates of their liturgical use accompany the descriptions, as well as a discussion of the lectionary system and of the liturgical terminology as attested by the rubrics. The author also discusses philological characteristics of the two subsidiary texts originally included in the Abba Garima manuscripts, ‘Discourse on the Harmony of Gospels’ and ‘Letter of Carpianus’ of Eusebius of Caesarea. The article contains an edition, an English translation and a succint historical commentary of three hitherto inedited donation notes from the 15th-16th centuries.
Investigating multilingualism and its association with executive functioning: An exploratory study comparing bilingual, trilingual and quadrilingual college students in India
Multilingualism has both advantages and disadvantages. Past research has highlighted this dichotomy by exploring the impact of linguistic ability on individuals’ executive functioning. This study explores the relationship between individuals’ linguistic ability (number of languages spoken) and their executive functioning, specifically, working memory – measured using the Corsi Block-Tapping task (Mueller, 2011a), inhibitory control – measured using the Go/No-Go task (Mueller, 2011b) and problem solving – measured using the Tower of London task (Mueller, 2011c) among bilingual, trilingual and quadrilingual Indian colleges students. Results from a Kruskal Wallis test indicated non-significant results for problem solving among the three groups. However, significant differences were found between groups for working memory (p = 0.050) (particularly between bilinguals and quadrilinguals, and trilinguals and quadrilinguals) and inhibitory control (p = 0.020) (particularly between trilinguals and quadrilinguals). The mixed results indicate a need for further research in this domain within the vast and diverse population of India.

State in Religion: Preamble to Pogrom
India is a secular state in which all faiths enjoy freedom of worship. The concept of secularism is implicit in the Preamble to our Constitution, which declares the resolve of the people to secure to all its citizens “liberty of thought, belief, faith, and worship.” There is no mysticism in the secular character of the state. Secularism is neither anti-god nor pro-god, it treats alike the devout, the agnostic, and the atheist. It eliminates god from the matters of the state and ensures that no one shall be discriminated against on the ground of religion. The state can have no religion of its own. It should treat all religions equally. In a secular state, the state is only concerned with the relation between man and man. It is not concerned with the relationship of man with god. It is left to the individual’s conscience. Man is not answerable to the state for any of his religious views. There can be no compulsions in law for any creed or practice of any form of worship.1 Since time immemorial, institutionalised religion has been “oppressive” and a tool in the hands of a few power-wielding people and it is no different in the contemporary scenario. Developmental and eruption disturbances of teeth and associated complications in Indian children from birth to 12 years of age: A cross-sectional survey
Introduction: This study evaluated the prevalence of developmental and eruption disturbances of teeth in both primary and mixed dentition of the patients along with the associations between the variables such as child's age, gender, jaw, and teeth.
Materials and Methods: A total of 9235 children visiting the Outpatient Department of Pedodontics and Preventive Dentistry, Postgraduate Institute of Dental Sciences, Rohtak, Haryana, India, were examined during a period of 1 year from January 2014 to January 2015. Clinical examination was carried out to identify the presence of developmental and eruption disturbances. Data management and statistical analysis were carried out using software Statistical Package for Social Sciences version 19.
Results: A total of 223 (2.41%) patients were affected by the developmental dental and eruption disturbances. The prevalence of developmental dental anomalies was 1.62 and of eruption disturbances was 1.06. Enamel hypoplasia was the most prevalent anomaly (0.77) whereas the most prevalent eruption disturbance was ectopic eruption (0.80).
Conclusion: The early detection and diagnosis of dental anomalies is important to prevent further disturbances and related complications
Fibroblast growth factor 21 (FGF21) is robustly induced by ethanol and has a protective role in ethanol associated liver injury
Objective: Excess ethanol consumption has serious pathologic consequences. In humans, repeated episodes of binge drinking can lead to liver damage and have adverse effects on other organs such as pancreas and brain. Long term chronic consumption of ethanol can also result in progressive alcoholic liver disease and cirrhosis. Fibroblast growth factor 21 (FGF21) is a metabolic regulator with multiple physiologic functions. FGF21 is a novel biomarker for non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) in humans and limits hepatotoxicity in mice. Therefore, we explored the possibility that FGF21 plays a role in response to ethanol consumption in both humans and mice.
Methods: We used a binge drinking paradigm in humans to examine the effect of acute ethanol consumption on circulating FGF21. We adapted this paradigm to evaluate the acute response to ethanol in mice. We then examined the role of FGF21 on liver pathology in two models of chronic ethanol consumption in both wild type (WT) mice and mice lacking FGF21 (FGF21-KO).
Results: Acute ethanol consumption resulted in a robust induction of serum FGF21 after 6 h in both humans and mice. Serum ethanol peaked at 1 h in both species and was cleared by 6 h. Ethanol clearance was the same in WT and FGF21-KO mice, indicating that FGF21 does not play a major role in ethanol metabolism in a binge paradigm. When FGF21-KO mice were fed the Lieber–DeCarli diet, a high fat diet supplemented with ethanol, a higher mortality was observed compared to WT mice after 16 days on the diet. When FGF21-KO mice consumed 30% ethanol in drinking water, along with a normal chow diet, there was no mortality observed even after 16 weeks, but the FGF21-KO mice had significant liver pathology compared to WT mice.
Conclusions: Acute or binge ethanol consumption significantly increases circulating FGF21 levels in both humans and mice. However, FGF21 does not play a role in acute ethanol clearance. In contrast, chronic ethanol consumption in the absence of FGF21 is associated with significant liver pathology alone or in combination with excess mortality, depending on the type of diet consumed with ethanol. This suggests that FGF21 protects against long term ethanol induced hepatic damage and may attenuate progression of alcoholic liver disease. Further study is required to assess the therapeutic potential of FGF21 in the treatment of alcoholic liver disease
Crafting Responsible Management Practices in Business School Learning Outcomes: An Indian Case Study
Management education is increasingly facing societal demands for becoming responsible business. Many management institutions have therefore become involved in embedding sustainable development as part of responsible management education into their academic system. This was also due to use of ‘responsible management’ as one of the important criteria in the international accreditation process and thus leading to greater acceptability amongst its target audience. The United Nations (UN)-supported Principles for Responsible Management Education (PRME) initiative is an important catalyst for the transformation of management education in this direction. The research was based on analysis of around 60 peer-reviewed articles in the field of responsible management education to understand important categories where the institution can commit for implementation of sustainable development. The next part of research focuses on studying the declarations, charters or initiatives for higher education for sustainable development. Further, the research for this article was built upon discussions on implementation of PRME in designing the student learning outcomes (SLOs) for management education. The article intends to study the case of one institute from North India that has made an attempt to adopt the six (plus one) principles of PRME into the curriculum design for its Post Graduate Diploma in Management (PGDM). The article serves as an instrument to help higher education institutions (HEIs) that are planning to adopt PRME as it explains the processes, challenges and benefits of implementing PRME throughout the system. </jats:p
