    Assessing financial well-being of merchants by analyzing behavioral patterns in historical transactions

    This study focuses on a new approach to estimate financial wellbeing indicators for merchants, by looking at behavioral patterns of their customers using transaction history. The transaction data for about 10,000 merchants in a specific country, was analyzed in terms of diversity and propensity of their customers using factors like age, distance travelled to shop, time of the day for shopping, day of the week for shopping, educational status, gender etc. These factors were used as independent variables to predict the financial well-being of merchants, particularly in two dimensions – total revenue and consistency in revenue, both relative to other merchants in the same industry. The merchants were then also divided into the categories of Essential, Non- essential and Luxury goods depending on the industry they belong to and it was interesting to observe the contrast across categories. The results suggest that behavioral patterns could be used to augment current methods of calculating credit score

    Electronics and Instrumentation for X‐Ray Fluorescence

    The measurement of the X-ray fluorescence (XRF) spectrum (spectroscopy) represents a very versatile tool to analyze the elemental composition of materials. XRF spectroscopy can be performed in two ways: energy dispersive or wavelength dispersive. The most relevant ones for XRF spectroscopy are natural radioactive decays, bremsstrahlung, and synchrotron radiation. This chapter focuses on semiconductor detectors which are the most consolidated solution for XRF instrumentation, thanks to the combination of compactness, robustness, and state-of-the-art spectroscopic performance. The planar geometry of a semiconductor detector can be adapted to the requirements of the specific application. The role of the readout electronics is to convert the packet of charge generated in the semiconductor, whose amount is proportional to the energy of the impinging X-ray photon, into an electrical signal that can be acquired and processed by an elaboration system. The processing of events can be performed in analog as well as in the digital domain

    Classifying Spending Behavior using Socio-Mobile Data

    Human spending behavior is essentially social. This work motivates and grounds the use of mobile phone based social interaction features for classifying spending behavior. Using a data set involving 52 adults (26 couples) living in a community for over a year, we find that social behavior measured via face-to-face interaction, call, and SMS logs, can be used to predict the spending behavior for couples in terms of their propensity to explore diverse businesses, become loyal customers, and overspend. Our results show that mobile phone based social interaction patterns can provide more predictive power on spending behavior than personality based features. Interestingly, we find that more social couples also tend to overspend.     Cyber Kill Chain-Based Hybrid Intrusion Detection System for Smart Grid

    Today’s electric power grid is a complex, automated, and interconnected cyber-physical system (CPS) that relies on supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA)-based communication infrastructure for operating wide-area monitoring, protection, and control (WAMPAC) applications. With a push towards making the grid smarter, the critical SCADA infrastructure like power system is getting exposed to countless cyberattacks that necessitate the development of state-of-the-art intrusion detection systems (IDS) to provide comprehensive security solutions at different layers in the smart grid network. While considering the continuously evolving attack surfaces at physical, communication, and application layers, existing conventional IDS solutions are insufficient and incapable to resolve multi-dimensional cybersecurity threats because of their specific nature of the operation, either a data-centric or protocol-centric, to detect specific types of attacks. This chapter presents a hybrid intrusion detection system framework by integrating a network-based IDS, model-based IDS, and state-of-the-art machine learning-based IDS to detect unknown and stealthy cyberattacks targeting the SCADA networks. We have applied the cyber-kill model to develop and demonstrate attack vectors and their associated mechanisms. The hybrid IDS utilizes attack signatures in grid measurements and network packets as well as leverages secure phasor measurements to detect different stages of cyber-attacks while following the kill-chain process. As a proof of concept, we present the experimental case study in the context of centralized wide-area protection (CWAP) cybersecurity by utilizing resources of the PowerCyber testbed at Iowa State University (ISU). We also describe different classes of implemented cyber-attacks and generated heterogeneous datasets using the IEEE 39 bus system.     Situation fencing: making geo-fencing personal and dynamic

    Geo-fencing has recently been applied to multiple applications including media recommendation, advertisements, wildlife monitoring, and recreational activities. However current geo-fencing systems work with static geographical boundaries. Situation Fencing allows for these boundaries to vary automatically based on situations derived by a combination of global and personal data streams. We present a generic approach for situation fencing, and demonstrate how it can be operationalized in practice. The results obtained in a personalized allergy alert application are encouraging and open door for building thousands of similar applications using the same framework in near future
