Application of uniform design in optimisation of three stage ageing of Al-Cu-Mg alloys

    No full text
The hardness variations and precipitation behaviour during the three stage ageing of three Al-Cu-Mg alloys were investigated using micro-hardness testing and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). To facilitate the determination of an optimised heat treatment, a uniform design method was employed by which the influences of three stage interrupted ageing on the hardness and precipitation can be elucidated with a limited number of experiments. It is found that optimised heat treatment with maximum hardness can be achieved for non-stretched materials by applying the method of three stage ageing, but there is no obvious effect for stretched T351 materials. A long initial Stage I and a suitable Stage II ageing time are beneficial for hardness, and the Stage II ageing at 25C shows more beneficial effect than ageing at 65C. The hardness increase in Stage I and Stage III ageing is closely related to the S phase content

Geometrical reasoning in the primary school, the case of parallel lines

    No full text
During the primary school years, children are typically expected to develop ways of explaining their mathematical reasoning. This paper reports on ideas developed during an analysis of data from a project which involved young children (aged 5-7 years old) in a whole-class situation using dynamic geometry software (specifically Sketchpad). The focus is a classroom episode in which the children try to decide whether two lines that they know continue (but cannot see all of the continuation) will intersect, or not. The analysis illustrates how the children can move from an empirical, visual description of spatial relations to a more theoretical, abstract one. The arguments used by the children during the lesson transcend empirical arguments, providing evidence of how young children can be capable of engaging in aspects of deductive argumentation

Roughness- and plasticity-induced fatigue crack closure under single overloads: analytical modelling

    No full text
A simple micromechanical model for the competitive influences of roughness-induced crack closure (RICC) and plasticity-induced crack closure (PICC) on fatigue during single peak overloads has been developed following the approach of Kamp et al. [Kamp N, Parry MR, Singh KD, Sinclair I. Acta Mater 2004;52:343]. This is seen to be functionally comparable to the finite element results of the accompanying paper [Singh KD, Khor KH, Sinclair I. Acta Mater 2006;54:4393], and consistent with a range of experimental data. Competitive influences of PICC and RICC effects during overload transients are particularly identified here
