    Currently, agricultural farm units are faced with a double and most times contradictory challenge, in order to be successful: on the one hand the invested capital has to be profitable and the economic performance has to be maximised. On the other hand, given the socio-environmental situation, it is necessary to preserve and to protect the environment and natural resources. Given the potential conflict of the two aims, since the satisfaction of one implies the underperformance of the other (and vice versa), the question then is: which is the solution to choose? We intend, in this work, to formulate a farm plan with the purpose of reconciling the criteria of environmental sustainability with that of economic competitiveness. For this achievement we proceed to the comparative study of sustainability of different groups of farms identified in the study area (first evaluation cycle) through MESMIS (“Marco para la Evaluación de Sistemas de Manejo de Recursos Naturales Mediante Indicadores de Sustentabilidad” - Framework for Evaluation of Natural-Resource Systems Handling through Sustainability Indicators) methodology, that allowed to select the more sustainable group of farms. Based on the found potentialities and weakness on these production systems, we stepped to the planning of a production unit of bovine meat, which obeys simultaneously to economic and environmental objectives, using Multicriteria Decision. We finished the work with the sustainability evaluation between groups of farms identified previously and the planned farms (second evaluation cycle), based, again, in the MESMIS methodology, to confirm (or not) the greatest sustainability of the last ones.     TRAGIC NOISE AND RHETORICAL FRIGIDITY IN LYCOPHRON'S ALEXANDRA

    Abstract This paper seeks to shed fresh light on the aesthetic and stylistic affiliations of Lycophron's Alexandra , approaching the poem from two distinct but complementary angles. First, it explores what can be gained by reading Lycophron's poem against the backdrop of Callimachus’ poetry. It contends that the Alexandra presents a radical and polemical departure from the Alexandrian's poetic programme, pointedly appropriating key Callimachean images while also countering Callimachus’ apparent dismissal of the ‘noisy’ tragic genre. Previous scholarship has noted links between the openings of the Aetia and of the Alexandra , but this article demonstrates that this relationship is only one part of a larger aesthetic divide between the two poets: by embracing the raucous acoustics of tragedy, Lycophron's poem offers a self-conscious and agonistic departure from Callimachus’ aesthetic preferences. Second, this article considers another way of conceiving the aesthetics of the poem beyond a Callimachean frame, highlighting how Lycophron pointedly engages with and evokes earlier Aristotelian literary criticism concerning the ‘frigid’ style: the Alexandra constructs its own independent literary history centred around the alleged name of its author, ‘Lycophron’. The article proposes that this traditional attribution is best understood as a pen name that signposts the poem's stylistic affiliations, aligning it not so much with the Ptolemaic playwright Lycophron of Chalcis but rather with Lycophron the sophist and a larger rhetorical tradition of stylistic frigidity. Ultimately, through these two approaches, the article highlights further aspects of the Alexandra 's aesthetic diversity

    Teaching empathy and emotions : J. M. Coetzee's "The lives of animals" and human-animal studies

    In "Teaching Empathy and Emotions: J. M. Coetzee's 'The Lives of Animals' and Human-Animal Studies," Alexandra Böhm focuses on one of the most influential novels in the field of HAS. In her article, she delineates the two main difficulties in teaching Coetzee's text: firstly, the text's protagonist, fierce and fearless Australian author Elizabeth Costello, is often less-than-lovable and offers few grounds for identification; secondly, the text's multilayered structure further problematizes the authorial voice. However, by focusing on Costello's reassessment of emotion and empathy, Böhm convincingly demonstrates that Coetzee's text offers possibilities for understanding the key concepts of HAS, such as animal agency, alterity, and the necessity of assuming a non-anthropocentric perspective. In the narrative, Costello employs empathy in her approach to animals, but is this also true of the metadiegetic level of Coetzee's text? Does the text itself suggest how to teach empathy? Alexandra Böhm demonstrates that it is possible to elicit affective responses to these questions through emotion journals and role-playing

    High pressure synthesis and study of ternary ruthenates

    Metal oxides containing ruthenium have a surprisingly varied range of low-temperature physical properties including the superconductor Sr2RuO4 and the metallic ferromagnet SrRuO3. The exceptionally broad manifold of itinerate and localised electronic phenomena is derived from broad Ru 4d bands and a wide number of Ru and O containing crystallographic structures. High-pressure is a powerful tool for manipulating crystal structures and tuning the associated electronic and magnetic properties. In this body of work, pressure has been utilised in two roles for the study of ternary ruthenates with perovskite and pyrochlore structures; as a synthetic method and for in situ studies (crystallographic or physical) of existing compounds. Chapter 3 details pressure dependent changes in the crystal structure of the perovskite PbRuO3 by powder x-ray diffraction up to 46 GPa and down to 20 K. PbRuO3 transformed on cooling, from orthorhombic spacegroup (Pnma) to an orbitally ordered low temperature phase, which is also an orthorhombic space group (Imma) and applied pressure reduced the critical temperature totally inhibiting the transition at 5.5 GPa. Additionally PbRuO3 was found to undergo a reversible pressure induced structural phase transition at 30 GPa and 290 K with a 10 % reduction in unit-cell volume. Indexing indicated an orthorhombic symmetry with a Pnna spacegroup. Pnna is not a spacegroup associated with perovskite or related perovskite structures despite the √2 x 2 x √2 perovskite superstructure being maintained across the transition. high-pressure resistivity and Raman measurements indicated that a metal-insulator transition accompanied the structural transition. In Chapter 4 high-pressure high-temperature (HP-HT) synthesis has been used to isolate dense phases that could not be produced at ambient pressure. The ortho-perovskite LaRuO3 with space group Pnma (# 62) was synthesised by conventional solid state methods. However to extend the series by substituting the smaller rare-earth cations, Ln3+ on the A-site of the same perovskite structure HP-HT (10 GPa and 1200° C) conditions were required. A powder diffraction study confirmed the Pnma structure of LnRuO3 where, Ln = Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, Dy and Ho, of which the later rare-earth compounds, where Ln = Sm to Ho have not been synthesised before. Neutron powder diffraction studies of LnRuO3 where Ln = La, Pr and Nd down to 7 K suggests a ~ 10 % non-stoichiometry on the Ru site, leading to the adjusted formula LnRu0.9O3 with an unusually low Ru3.3+ valency. A possible exception to the low Ru oxidation state is EuRuO3, which has a larger unit-cell, suggesting a Eu2+Ru4+O3 charge distribution with the more common Ru4+, however, this is not concordant with magnetisation measurements. Additionally neutron diffraction suggests that the RuO6 octahedra are distorted by spin-orbit coupling. Magnetometry and resistivity measurements indicate that the compounds are semiconducting paramagnets down to 7 K. Finally in Chapter 5 is presented the analysis of a high-pressure powder x-ray diffraction experiment of the pyrochlore Tl2Ru2O7. Carried out at synchrotron facilities, we have extended the pressure-temperature phase diagram to 3.7 GPa and 25 K. Previously it had been reported that, when cooled, Tl2Ru2O7 undergoes a structural phase transition from a cubic (Fd-3m) phase to a low temperature, orthorhombic (Pnma) phase that forms Haldane chains - an unusual one-dimensional orbital ordering. As for PbRuO3 high-pressure conditions are found to inhibit the orbital ordering, to reduce the critical temperature and to suppress the transition at pressures exceeding 3.0 GPa

    Addressing the challenges of climate change risks and adaptation in coastal areas: A review

    Climate change is and will continue altering the world's coasts, which are the most densely populated and economically active areas on earth and home for highly valuable ecosystems. While there is considerable relevant research, in the authors' experience this problem remains challenging for coastal engineering. This paper reviews important challenges in this respect and identifies three key actions to address them: (a) refocusing traditional practice towards more climate-aware approaches; (b) developing more comprehensive risk frameworks that include the multi-dimensionality and non-stationarity of their components and consideration of uncertainty; and (c) building bridges between risk assessment and adaptation theory and practice. We conclude that the way forward includes numerous activities including increased observations; the attribution of coastal impacts to their drivers; enhanced climate projections and their integration into impact models; more impact assessments at the local scale; dynamic projections of spatially-distributed exposure and vulnerability; and the exploration of inherently adaptive options.     Obituary − Emeritus Professor Dr John Davidson McCraw (1925−2014) MBE, MSc NZ, DSc Well, CRSNZ, FNZSSS.

    John McCraw was an Earth scientist who began working as a pedologist with Soil Bureau, DSIR, then became the Foundation Professor of Earth Sciences at the University of Waikato in Hamilton, inspiring a new generation to study and work in Earth sciences . In retirement, John McCraw was an author and historian with a special emphasis on Central Otago as well as the Waikato region. Throughout his career, marked especially by exemplary leadership, accomplished administration, and commitment to his staff and students at the University of Waikato, John McCraw also contributed to the communities in which he lived through public service organizations and as a public speaker. He received a number of awards including an MBE, fellowship, and companionship, and, uniquely, is commemorated also with a glacier, a fossil, and a museum-based research room named for him. Emeritus Professor John McCraw passed away on the 14th of December, 2014. An obituary, entitled “Dedicated to earth science and his students”, was published in the Waikato Times on the 10th of January, 2015
